Chapter 30
Lucas asked quietly,
âWho exactly would make me uncomfortable?â
âWellâŚâ
Adele hesitated. Everyone would condemn him. People would say Lucas had made a terrible mistake, that heâd stained his perfect life.
Lucas simply replied, âI donât care what people I barely know say. The only opinions that matter to me are those within my own circle.â
Adele blinked. âAm I⌠inside that circle?â
Lucasâs eyes curved into a smileâwarm, gentle, genuine. It was the first time sheâd seen him laugh like that.
âYes. Adele, youâre one of the people inside my circle.â
Something magical happened. The moment Lucas said those words, the frantic beating of her heart eased, as if a spell had calmed it.
Then came the wave of guilt.
How could I think of leaving someone like him?
Even though she knew his death awaited in the future, sheâd still planned to walk away. Adele raised a trembling hand and covered her face.
Seeing this, Lucas spoke softly, as though soothing a frightened child.
âItâs all right. Just trust me and come with me.â
She almost said yesâalmost.
âNo, engagement is too much!â
Adele shook her head firmly. Even if she accepted his help, becoming engaged was out of the question.
âI appreciate your kindness, but I canât agree to an engagement.â
âWhy not?â
âYou know why.â
âI donât.â
Apparently, he wanted a direct explanation. Adele took a deep breath and began.
âIâm a commoner⌠and I have a child. No matter what you think, others will see that badly. Your reputation will suffer.â
âAnd?â
âWhat do you mean, and?â
Was he serious? Adeleâs mind spun, trying to find somethingâanythingâthat would make him reconsider.
âYour family will hate me.â
âAnd?â
Adele froze. She had run out of arguments.
Since when did I get so bad at talking?
Her mouth had gone dry. She lifted the teacup, took a bitter sip, and tried to steady her thoughts.
âWhat about Leon?â she blurted. âYou should think about him too.â
âLeon isnât the kind of boy whoâd judge anyone for their social status,â Lucas replied easily.
That was true. Leon was kindâheâd probably smile and sincerely offer his blessing.
ââŚIâm sorry.â
âItâs fine. People say all kinds of things when theyâre desperate. Soâis there any other reason?â
Adele realized that her reasonsâbeing of low birth and having a childâwerenât enough to sway him.
Lucas leaned back slightly. âGood. If thereâs no other reason, letâs move on to the next step.â
âThe next step?â
âWhen would you like the engagement ceremony to be?â
This manâonce he decided on something, he was like a bulldozer. Adele, flustered, tried a more fundamental argument.
âWhat if you fall in love with someone else later? What will you do then?â
Love was unpredictableâit could take hold in a single day. Adele knew that better than anyone.
Lucas chuckled. âI havenât fallen in love until now. What makes you think Iâll start?â
âYou will! Youâre good, handsome, rich, and capable. Of course someone will fall for you.â
As long as you donât die, that is.
Then the thought struck herâhe wouldnât die now, would he? In the novel, it was Ronshka who killed him. But she would never allow her son to commit such a crime.
If she raised him right, Lucas would live.
So perhaps⌠she was worrying for nothing.
All I need to do is raise Ronshka well.
Then everything would be fine.
âYouâre quite determined,â Lucas said with amusement. âBut Iâll bet on the oppositeâthat I wonât fall in love.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause love is⌠a dreadful thing.â
Adele tilted her head. Why would he think that? The book never mentioned anything about Lucasâs view of love. He had only been the protagonistâs mentorâa catalyst for his growth.
âSo, just accept it,â he said calmly.
ââŚThen promise me one thing,â Adele said after a pause. âIf you ever fall in love with someone, tell me yourself. Donât let me hear it from someone else.â
âI told you, that wonât happen.â
âStill, the world is unpredictable. Just tell me when it happens, and Iâll leave on my own.â
ââŚAll right. I promise.â
Lucas could tell she wouldnât change her mind, no matter what he said.
âThen, we can start discussing the details of our engagement.â
âYes,â Adele answered firmly.
If things had reached this point, she would just have to find a way to manage it and survive this crisis properly.
Meanwhile…
âEngaged? Engaged?â
Heirn ground his teeth so hard it sounded like breaking stone. Rage burned through him, hot and consuming. But to lash out would destroy his composure and dignity, so he forced it downâbarely.
Just then, Rosalyn approached him, pale and trembling.
âFather⌠Is it true? Is Ronshka really⌠my brother?â
Her small hands, clasped tightly over her chest, quivered. She already knew the truth but needed to hear it confirmedâto drive away the fear clawing at her heart.
Maybe I misheard.
Maybe it was all a mistake.
âIs that what you want to know?â Heirn asked coldly.
âY-yesâŚâ
âThen Iâll tell you. Ronshka is the same as you. He carries my blood.â
Her voice shook as badly as her hands. âThen⌠then that meansâŚâ
âWhy are you acting like this?â Heirn sneered. âYou should be happy. Instead of a useless daughter like you, Iâll have a talented son. You wonât need to keep studying anymore.â
âI wonât⌠need to study?â she repeated faintly.
Her lips trembled now. It had been hard, yesâbut she had liked learning spirit magic.
âYes,â Heirn said. âYou can just dress up prettily like a doll and attend parties. Didnât you say you wanted friends? Youâll meet plenty there.â
His tone sounded gentle, but it was pure spiteâan outlet for his fury.
âIâI donât hate studying spirit magic, Father. I love it!â she cried, summoning her courage.
Heirnâs eyes went icy. âBut you have no talent.â
Rosalynâs mind went blank. She staggered backward, dizzy.
When theyâd first set out on this trip together, sheâd been so happy. Even knowing it was for training, sheâd been excited that her father wanted her by his side.
And nowâŚ
Everything sheâd believed shattered.
Rosalyn turned and ran out of the room. No one stopped her.
Heirn just watched her go, his gaze cold and pitiless.
The next morning, Heirn left Lucasâs estate as planned.
He departed at dawn, without even saying goodbye to Rosalyn.
Leon was sullen at first, but that didnât last longâbecause an even more shocking piece of news awaited him.
âWhat? Miss Adele and Master LucasâŚ?â
âYes,â Lucas said lightly over breakfast. âWeâre engaged.â
The entire table froze.
Madeleine spilled the juice she was pouring.
Kish collapsed into a chair.
Leonâs blue eyes widened so much it looked like they might pop out, and he forgot to chew the food in his mouth.
But none of them reacted quite like Ronshka did.
âLiar!â the boy shouted, slamming his hands on the table as he jumped to his feet.
âItâs true,â Lucas replied.
âLies! Lies!â
âRonshka, calm down first.â
Adele should have told him earlierâŚ
She regretted it immediately. She and Lucas had been so busy talking that when she returned, Ronshka had already fallen asleep. Sheâd wanted to tell him the next morning, but Lucas had announced it before she could.
âYouâre lying!â Ronshka stammered, his voice shaking. His magic responded to his emotionsâa ring of small fireballs began circling around him. If he lost control, the entire dining hall could go up in flames.
Adele hurried over, panicked.
âMom!â he cried, running into her arms, pouting and near tears.
âTeacherâs lying! Lying is bad!â
Even in his distress, he was unbearably cuteâbut now was not the time to think that.
âRonshka,â Adele said softly, âwhy donât you listen to what he has to say first?â
Her calm tone made Ronshkaâs eyes go wide, round like Leonâs.
âM-Mom?â he whispered in disbelief.
âListen, RonshkaâŚâ
âItâs a lie, right?â
âRonshka, itâsâŚâ
Adele was just as nervous as her son, stammering. But there was no avoiding it. She would have to tell the truth eventually. So she closed her eyes tightly and said,
âWhat Master Lucas said is true.â
Of course, she decided to keep one thing secret from the childrenâ
that this was all just an act, a carefully staged performance.
Childrenâs mouths could be sealed tight one momentâŚ
and the next, lighter than air.
