Story 43
My Husband’s Face
My husband is quite opinionated.
And he often goes on business trips abroad for more than three months at a time.
So, there are only a few times a year when I actually see him face to face.
We’ve been married for over twenty years now, but since about three years ago, I’ve started to feel that something’s off about him when he comes home from his trips.
What’s strange is that, sometimes, his face looks like a completely different person’s.
My husband, if I had to describe him, has narrow eyes, pale skin, and—well, to put it bluntly—a rather frail look to him.
But every once in a while, especially when he comes back home around summer, his face changes. His eyes are big and double-lidded, his nose high, his features deep and sharp, his skin a healthy tone—he looks like a young, handsome man with strong features. Nothing like my husband in his forties.
The first time it happened, I was so shocked that I suspected an intruder or some sort of scam.
But his voice was exactly my husband’s.
It made no sense. I even thought about going to the police.
But at the time, I was living with my in-laws, and when my husband came home after four and a half months away, the three of us were there to welcome him back.
To me, he looked like someone else entirely, yet my in-laws were chatting with him as if nothing was wrong. They didn’t seem to notice a thing.
Still feeling uneasy, I asked my mother-in-law casually,
“Hasn’t his eyes gotten…bigger than before?”
She laughed a little and said, “Oh, no, he’s always had those tiny eyes—you could hardly tell if they were open or closed. He looks the same as ever.”
So I realized—what they were seeing must have been his usual face.
While I was still confused, my husband left again for another business trip.
Since then, there are times he comes home with his normal face, and other times when it’s that completely different one.
It terrifies me to think that I’m the only one who can see the change. It’s really, truly unsettling.
I can’t tell if I’m the one losing my mind—or if something has actually happened to my husband.
At this point, it’s so disturbing that I almost wish it were just an elaborate prank.
