Chapter 10
* * *
âThat little brat⊠She didnât notice anything, did she?â
Luden adjusted his glasses, his lips tightening.
ââŠItâs probably just my imagination. What could a mere six-year-old possibly know?â
Then he pressed down on the straw stuck to his trouser cuff with his hand. A few light grains of wheat came loose with it, but they too simply crumbled into dust.
âIâm doing all this for the captain.â
Vasily had changed after becoming the grand duke.
All the freedom and boldness he once displayed while rampaging across the battlefield had disappeared.
âThis is such a boring age. âŠWell, I suppose it canât be helped now.â
Now, he was simply standing in a grave, slowly dying beneath the hollow crown of being a grand duke.
âIn the end, youâll thank me.â
So⊠I wonât forgive anyone who gets in my way.
Even if itâs a six-year-old child.
Ludenâs eyes darkened.
* * *
âMad draaaagonâŠâ
Haniel clung to Vasilyâs trouser leg, dragging along behind him.
âRejected. Something else.â
âStudying a dragon corpseâŠâ
âRejected.â
âGoing to see the mad dragonâŠâ
âRejected.â
âPaying respects at the dragonâs graveâŠâ
âRejected!â
âAw! You said youâd grant all my requests!â
Haniel cried out indignantly. Vasily, who had been walking after leaving the warehouse, let out a sigh.
âWhat are you even going to do after seeing a bunch of dead dragon corpses?â
âHoeing!â
âWhat?â
Oops. Haniel calmly composed herself.
âI told you Iâd teach you how to farm in the north!â
âWhat does that have to do with the mad dragon? âŠWait, donât tell me.â
Vasily, who had been walking along with steady footsteps, suddenly stopped.
Haniel toddled over, closing the distance between them. One of Vasilyâs steps was five of Hanielâs, so she kept falling behind.
âYou keep going on about farming. Are you saying you want to make use of the mad dragonâs evil energy?â
âYes!â
Haniel nodded vigorously.
âBecause⊠I heard the north wasnât this cold when the mad dragon was alive!â
ââŠâ
âItâs because of the hooot magic power the mad dragon had.â
Haniel pointed with her tiny finger toward the distant mountains of the north, specifically toward the peak where the mad dragonâs corpse lay.
What she said was true.
For the past 500 years.
In other words, back when the mad dragon was still alive, the north actually wasnât this cold.
It was thanks to the heat from the mad dragonâs power, which had radiated warmth comparable to several active volcanoes combined. But the moment the mad dragon died and that energy was sealed away, everything froze over.
Haniel was saying she wanted to reverse that.
âThereâs still an incredible amount of heat coming from the corpse, right? What if we let it seep into the earth instead of blocking it?â
A glossy sheen appeared in her pink eyes.
âWe can use the corpse itself as an energy source!â
The child waved her arms around, moving her lips like a little chick.
âIf we melt the ground? We can farm! If we grow wheat?? We can become bread rich! If word gets out that you can become rich??? People will flock here!â
ââŠâ
âThen the lord can fix up the grand dukeâs castle in no time???? And live like a big shot while showing off his bread?!â
âYou mean live like a big shot.â
âWeâll be able to make a proper haul!â
âYou mean make a proper killing.â
In fact, there wasnât a single thing wrong with the little girlâs logic.
The reason people didnât settle in the north was because there was no reliable way to make a living.
Farming? If it was possible, thatâd be ideal.
If they could create a stable source of income from it, they might even be able to build a temple in the north. Or secretly hire a priest.
âThe emperorâs face would be priceless.â
Then they could purify the contamination in other regions as well⊠That would increase the amount of land available for development. More people would move in, and capital would begin circulating. It was the ideal process for developing a territory.
But.
ââŠI wondered what you were talking about. Hey, brat.â
âNot hey, brat, Iâm Haniel⊠Ngh!â
At that moment, Vasily grabbed Haniel by the side from behind and lifted her straight up.
Hanielâs field of vision suddenly rose as she flailed her short arms and legs.
âNo wonder she keeps talking about bread.â
Vasily frowned at how light the child was, lighter than a feather. Forcing himself to look away from her round head, he jerked his chin toward the front.
âLook over there. What color is the smoke rising from the peak?â
âB-black?â
âDoes it look good for your body, or bad?â
âB-badâŠ?â
âCorrect.â
ââŠâ
âUse the mad dragonâs corpse as a heat source to warm the north again? You think I havenât thought of that?â
ââŠâ
âThe problem is the poisonous energy. That crazy dragon bastard doesnât just spew heat, it also pumps out rotten air as a two-for-one deal. Thatâs why we have no choice but to seal the whole thing.â
âThen just extract the poisonous energy and purify it!â
âEven Dantalion Klein himself.â
âHic!â
Suddenly, Hanielâs body trembled.
Vasily loosened his grip. Sheâd suddenly started hiccupping, so apparently heâd grabbed her side too tightly.
ââŠcouldnât purify all of it, so he just sealed it up?â
Looking from behind, he could see Hanielâs pale cheeks puffed out in a sulk.
âGet it? Thatâs a barrel full of rotten sardines. If you open it carelessly, the surrounding area will be devastated. Huh? Weâre already dealing with enough contamination, so adding moreâŠâ
âThatâs what Iâm sayinggg.â
Haniel mumbled gloomily. Then she began wildly flailing her arms and legs while dangling in midair.
âJust block the contamination and let the heat flow through! Like a strainer!â
âYou seem to think itâs as easy as, poof! Purify! Itâs not that simple.â
âI⊠might be able to do it.â
Haniel muttered something incomprehensible.
Vasily set the child down. Then he spoke firmly.
âEnough. Just look around the village for a while and then leave. Here, Iâll give you those southern goods from earlier⊠and some of that bread you love so much.â
âUgh.â
Haniel lightly kicked the ground.
This was the second time today heâd turned her down. He didnât feel particularly good about it, but it couldnât be helped.
âIf she had divine power, sheâd obviously have been doted on at the temple, and judging by how little magic power I can sense from her, she must have been born weak.â
Heâd rather wash Dantalionâs socks than believe a little brat like that.
Besides, if he let her get too close to the mad dragonâs corpse for no reason⊠there was no telling what effect it might have on her body.
âYoung, and ridiculously weak.â
Ugh, what a nuisance.
In the end, Vasily gave Haniel a quick tour of the village.
There wasnât much to see in Bethel Village. Many of the early settlers, including the mansionâs servants, had recently left in droves.
Vasily simply stopped by the food storage and stuffed a small bag full of bread for her. It was dry and coarse rye bread, but the little girlâs eyes sparkled and her nostrils flared with delight. She was 100% satisfied, that much was obvious.
The bags of sugar and spices looked too heavy for her, so he left them with Camilla for the time being.
Before he knew it, the sun was setting.
Going out into the mistlands on a night like this would make her easy prey for monsters.
And since heâd already said what he said, he decided to let the child spend one more night at the mansion and send her away the next day.
And so the night passed.
âŠFor someone, it was a very long night.
And then.
The next morning.
âAhâŠâ
Vasily stood blankly in front of the mansion.
A vicious laugh suddenly escaped him.
âF*ckâŠâ
Is this for real?
His red eyes slowly took in his land.
The blazing sun overhead.
Drip, drip, the sound of water falling from the roof.
Beads of sweat forming from the back of his neck.
Camillaâs bewildered expression as she took off her outer garment.
âYour Grace, what on earthâŠâ
The events of the previous night suddenly flashed through his mind like a revolving lantern.
So, what happened was⊠No, thatâs not whatâs important right now.
ââŠWhereâs the brat?â
âPardon?â
âWhere did that little brat go!â
In just one night.
The north had undergone a complete transformation.
