Chapter – 04
A Physiological Defect?
The only flaw was that the false heat Yu Wei had been triggered into… was not caused by Shi Ciyan’s pheromones.
Shi Ciyan stayed in the bathroom for a few more minutes, holding the “little heater” in his arms, waiting until Lin Yuchi’s pheromones had mostly dispersed before coming out.
Yu Wei’s shirt buttons had already been torn off by himself, his collar wide open and barely covering anything.
Shi Ciyan glanced at him twice, then took a thin jacket and wrapped him up tightly.
Judging by the timing, Qiu Lei had already been gone for over ten minutes—it was about time he returned.
Before that, Shi Ciyan sent a message to the driver.
Five or six minutes later, Qiu Lei rushed back into the dorm, sweating heavily, handing the suppressant to Shi Ciyan before collapsing into a chair, gasping for air.
Running in this heat almost killed him.
“Thanks,” Shi Ciyan said, taking the suppressant.
With his back turned to Qiu Lei, he half-held Yu Wei and quickly injected the medicine.
“Aah—mm—”
Yu Wei curled up in pain, a suppressed groan slipping from his lips.
Shi Ciyan soothed him while slowly pushing the suppressant into his gland. The person in his arms gradually calmed down, and eventually passed out completely.
After the injection, he took a box of inhibitor patches from the drawer and re-applied one for Yu Wei.
Qiu Lei finished a bottle of water and finally caught his breath. After observing him for a moment, he asked:
“Are you a Beta too?”
He had assumed Shi Ciyan was an Alpha, since he could detect Lin Yuchi’s pheromones and knew Yu Wei had been affected and needed a suppressant.
So he had worried about leaving Yu Wei alone with Shi Ciyan.
Even though he didn’t doubt Shi Ciyan’s character, biology class had made one thing clear: Alpha and Omega pheromones can be dangerously intoxicating, easily making people lose control and abandon reason, morality, and even law.
On his way to buy suppressants, he had even gone to the dorm office to find Yu Song first, planning to have him come back.
But no one was there, and he didn’t have Yu Song’s number, so he had rushed to the pharmacy instead.
When he returned, Yu Wei and Shi Ciyan were both safe and sound.
And yet, the room was filled with such a dense Omega scent that even a Beta could notice it clearly.
Since Betas were usually insensitive to pheromones, the fact that he could smell it at all meant how intense it was.
And yet—Shi Ciyan, an Alpha, showed no reaction at all.
Other than being a Beta, Qiu Lei couldn’t think of any explanation.
“Alpha.”
Shi Ciyan answered calmly.
He turned slightly to block Qiu Lei’s view, quickly straightened Yu Wei’s clothes, and lifted him into a princess carry before walking out.
“Take him to the hospital. Tell Yu Song when he comes back.”
After a few steps, he paused.
“And keep the bathroom door and dorm windows open. Air it out.”
Qiu Lei watched their retreating figures, deep in thought.
A ridiculous idea suddenly flashed through his mind.
If Shi Ciyan was an Alpha, and could remain completely unaffected by Omega pheromones…
Did he have a physiological defect?
……
When Shi Ciyan went downstairs, the driver had just arrived. Seeing him, he immediately got out to open the door.
“City Central Hospital.”
The campus was crowded due to the start of the semester. Traffic was heavy, and getting out was harder than getting in. The gate was especially congested—the long line of cars moved like slow, lazy snails.
The driver glanced at the rearview mirror out of boredom.
He immediately regretted it.
In the back seat, Shi Ciyan was holding an unconscious Omega very gently in his arms. The care in his movements was obvious.
When Shi Ciyan noticed his gaze, he also looked up into the mirror.
Their eyes met through the reflection.
The driver immediately turned back around, stiff as a board. Even though the air conditioning was on full blast, sweat still ran down his back. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and focused on driving.
The 20-minute drive to City Central Hospital felt suffocatingly silent.
Suddenly, a phone rang from the back seat.
Shi Ciyan paused, picked up Yu Wei’s phone, and answered it.
A man’s voice came through:
“Sir, there’s a meeting this afternoon. We need to leave.”
Shi Ciyan glanced at the screen.
Caller ID: Uncle Wang.
“Hello. He’s at City Central Hospital.”
On the other side, the sound of a car engine roared.
“I’ll be right there.”
The call ended abruptly.
Not long after they arrived at the hospital and settled Yu Wei, the phone rang again to confirm the ward.
Wang Youguang rushed in, breathless. Seeing Yu Wei lying on the bed, then Shi Ciyan beside him, his expression turned wary.
“Young Master, what happened?”
“False heat. I’ve already given him a suppressant.”
Just then, three or four doctors entered the room.
“What’s all this for?”
After a false heat episode, a suppressant injection and a few days of observation were usually enough. There was no need for such an overreaction.
And yet—they were drawing blood.
“I’m worried there might be other effects, so we’ll do a full check to be safe,” one doctor said.
Wang Uncle stepped aside after glancing at Yu Wei’s pale face.
The needle entered his skin.
“Please be gentle, he’s an Omega and afraid of pain,” Wang Uncle said.
The doctor ignored him.
“Are you an Alpha doctor?” Wang Uncle added. “Shouldn’t an Omega or female doctor do this?”
“Please do not question my professionalism,” the doctor replied coldly.
Before Wang Uncle could insist further, another voice interrupted.
“Dr. Chen, be gentle when drawing blood.”
It was Shi Ciyan.
The doctor glanced at him, annoyed.
“I know.”
He had been called in on his day off after performing three surgeries just to draw a tube of blood.
He was a top surgeon, not a phlebotomist.
After finishing, he muttered a few words and left.
Before leaving, he glanced at Shi Ciyan and shut the door.
“I’ll go to the restroom,” Shi Ciyan said.
But instead of going, he turned directly toward the doctor’s office.
Two minutes after he left, Yu Song burst into the ward, breathless.
Seeing Yu Wei unconscious, he nearly cried.
“Big brother…”
Wang Uncle reassured him that the suppressant had worked and everything was stable.
Just then, Shi Ciyan returned.
Wang Uncle suddenly noticed blood on his arm.
“You were injured?”
Shi Ciyan glanced down, wiped it casually.
“Probably scratched somewhere.”
No one questioned it further.
Not long after, Yu Wei woke up.
“Brother, are you okay?!”
Yu Song cried dramatically.
Yu Wei immediately scolded him weakly, furious despite his condition.
“You fought on the first day of school! I told you not to!”
But Yu Song only muttered:
“He deserved it.”
And then, even louder:
“All Alphas are trash.”
Including the man standing nearby, Shi Ciyan: “……”
Later, Yu Wei was discharged after confirming he was fine.
At the school gate, Yu Song clung to him reluctantly.
“Come visit me when you can!”
Yu Wei agreed just to get rid of him.
After they left, Shi Ciyan stood at the gate watching the empty road.
“Thanks for today,” Yu Song said awkwardly after a while. “Even though I don’t like how nice you are to my brother.”
He added:
“If you need anything, just tell me. I owe you one.”
Shi Ciyan smiled faintly but said nothing.
Then Yu Song suddenly said:
“I hate Alphas.”
Especially after his brother became an Omega.
“Do you know our roommate? The one with glasses—Alpha or Beta?”
“Beta.”
“Only one Alpha in our dorm, Lin Yuchi. All Alphas are animals. I wish they all disappeared so Omegas would be safe.”
Shi Ciyan’s smile faded.
“…You’re sexist.”
“I’m not. I just hate scum who randomly release pheromones and hurt Omegas.”
Shi Ciyan: “……”
You could’ve just said Lin Yuchi’s name.
