~Chapter 66~
The tunnel was much longer than I expected.
I touched my neck with discomfort and sighed.
âSo this is supposed to be an entry pass?â
The choker around my neck with a red gem in the center felt suffocating.
As I fiddled with it, Simon spoke to me carefully.
âUm, Ann. Just so you know⌠the villagers here donât really like outsiders.â
He let out a small sigh.
 âThey might be a little⌠cold toward you.â
I shrugged.
âWell, could it be worse than how the people at the Magic Tower treated you?â
ââŚâ
Simon gave me a silent side glance.
Still, if heâs saying this much, it must be serious.
Even Ricardo warned me earlierâit made me uneasy.
âBut please try to understand.â
 âHuh?â
Simon looked straight ahead as we neared the tunnelâs exit.
 He began to explain.
Orphen admired Carpeaâs magic, despite fearing it.
It wanted to become great like Carpea and often tried to conquer Dremokan.
But not everyone supported magic.
Some believed magic was unholyâand couldnât understand why a kingdom would go to war over it.
Those who opposed the war left to find a place untouched by magic.
âThat place became the magic-restricted zone: Bilpart.â
We finally reached the tunnelâs end.
My eyes blinked slowly, adjusting to the sudden lightâand there it was.
Bilpart.
ââŚIt looks normal?â
It was just a regular village.
It smelled like a place where people livedâsimple and unremarkable.
Of course, the villagers stared at us with cold eyes, just as Simon said.
 But that much was expected.
âSimon once said his family didnât want him to become a mage.â
Back then, I thought it was just because he was too young.
But now I understoodâit was a lot deeper than that.
Honestly, I admired him.
He ran off to Carpea, fully knowing how his hometown felt.
âIâm heading home now. What about you, Ann?â
 Simon asked.
I hesitated.
I came to look for the so-called “weirdo” that Peril mentionedâbut I couldnât find them on my own.
I shouldâve asked Peril for more detailsâŚ
âIâm actually looking for someone who studied⌠timelines.â
âWhat?â
Simon tilted his head in confusion.
 Should I have said that?
Well, too late to take it back.
âI heard heâs passed away, but I was hoping maybe some of his research remained.â
Simonâs face took on a strange expression.
ââŚHave you heard of anyone like that?â
Do I need to start drawing spirals in the dirt?
 I panicked and quickly added,
 âSorry, I was just joking.â
Simon still looked like he had heard something unbelievable.
Then Ricardo chimed in from the side,
âThey wonât give us information easily, so weâll need to search around ourselves.â
Yeah⌠it would come down to legwork, after all.
âThen I guess Iâll see you again later,â I told Simon and turned to leave.
But suddenly, Simon called after me, confused.
âWait, Ann. How do you know about that?â
 ââŚHuh?â
His face was tight with confusion.
âYouâre talking about Mr. Atkins, right?â
The name was unfamiliar, but seeing Simonâs serious reaction, I nodded quickly.
 âY-Yes! Him!â
***
Atkins.
No one knew much about him.
Most didnât even know his first name. They just called him by his last name.
âPeople said he was a mysterious adventurer. All the kids here grew up listening to his stories.â
âStories?â
Simon nodded.
âLegends, really. About him slaying monsters and uncovering the worldâs secrets. Doesnât Carpea have stories like that too?â
I wasnât sure, but stories like that were common enough.
As we climbed the mountain path, I slippedâ
 Ricardo caught my arm.
âT-Thanks.â
âIt mustâve rained yesterday. Be carefulâitâs slippery.â
He spoke calmly, as if nothing had happened.
âSo, youâre saying this âlegendâ was a real person?â Ricardo asked.
âYes! Everyone thought I was just obsessed with fiction, but I found proof he really existed.â
âWait⌠Is that what you were so curious about before?â
 Simon smiled, proud.
 âYes. His research notes.â
Could Atkins be the âweirdoâ Peril mentioned?
Simon was so excited, he couldnât stop talking.
âHe defeated monsters you canât even imagine! Beasts that no human could dream of fightingâŚâ
âHaha, really?â
 I looked away awkwardlyâ
 But my eyes met Ricardoâs.
âWhat?â I asked.
âDo I need permission to look at you now?â
âŚHeâs always like this.
Simon happily talked on as we climbed, clearly thrilled to find someone who would listen.
But something didnât feel right.
Is Atkins really the person Peril was talking about?
His stories didnât sound like someone studying timelines.
Even when I tried to steer the topic toward timelines, Simon got lost in his own thoughts and ignored my question.
In the end, I gave up and just followed along.
âHere we are!â
We finally stopped in front of a dark cave.
It was larger than I expected.
Simon stepped in comfortably and turned on a light.
ââŚItâs not magic-powered.â
âRight! Itâs a treasure Mr. Atkins found.â
Something about the light felt strangely familiar.
It doesnât belong in this worldâŚ
âMr. Atkins once said, âThere are powers greater than magic. We donât need Carpeaâs teachings.ââ
While Simon talked, I walked to a box in the corner.
Inside were piles of old books.
âYou said you wanted to learn about timelines, right?â
Simon followed behind and pulled out a thick book from the bottom of the pile.
âThis might help.â
 âThank you.â
I opened the bookâan old smell wafted out.
 The first page read:
***

***
Simon scratched his head.
âI never really understood what he meant by this âbook of fate.â I thought maybe, if I became a mage, Iâd figure it out.â
He paused.
 ââŚAnn?â
âAhâhaha. Sorry.â
 I forced a smile.
 But my mind was racing.
This wasnât just a theory.
 It was my story.
So the story I read back thenâŚ
Was that the fate of this world?
Now that I thought about it, the original plot and this world werenât the same.
 Like Ailins, for exampleâŚ
Is she the one who defied fate?
And now the world is trying to pull itself back onto its original path?
Ricardo, still reading over my shoulder, spoke.
âSo⌠this guyâs adventures took place in another world?â
âI-Iâm not sureâŚâ
Suddenlyâ
âIntruders!â
âTheyâve come to kill us again, just like last time!â
 âEveryone, prepare to attack them!â
And heavy footsteps came stomping into the cave.
ahh, peril has feelings for fl too! thank you so much for the chapters, appreciate you!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m glad you’re enjoying the story! Peril’s feelings for the FL definitely add an interesting layer of tension to the plot. I can’t wait to share more with you! Stay tuned!â¤ď¸
Wow Iâm really liking how the story has been deeply explaining her transmigration. Usually in these stories that part is just glossed over. It really makes this story unique. These details makes the tone of the story from mystery to depression
Right!!
Did I miss the part where she learned the researcher was from that village? O_O
