~Chapter 65~
I glared at Ricardo with resentment, but he didnât seem to care at all.
Still, I didnât back down.
âThese injuries arenât a big deal! Youâre the one whoâs actually hurtâ!â
âThey are a big deal.â
A sharp scent reached my nose, and his rough hands moved boldly down my back.
His cold touch made me flinch before I could stop myself.
âDoes it hurt?â he asked.
 âN-No, itâs just⌠it tickles.â
Then I heard a soft chuckle from behind. My face flushed, and I quickly said,
âSee? Iâm fine. Letâs switch places now.â
âWait until the medicine soaks in.â
He answered firmly and began packing the medical kit.
âWaitâwhy are you closing that?â I asked, reaching for the box.
But Ricardo smoothly moved it out of my reach.
Unbelievable.
âYouâre acting like a child, you know.â
 ââŚA child?â
Ricardo frowned, as if heâd misheard me.
âYes, a child. A stubborn kid who refuses treatment.â
ââŚAnd what about you, thenâŚâ
He paused mid-sentence, his eyes scanning me from head to toe.
âWhat? Are you going to say Iâm a kid too?â
Ricardo awkwardly looked away, then rubbed his face with a troubled expression.
âJust⌠put your clothes back on properly.â
I wouldnât be in this mess if it werenât for you!
Grumbling, I pouted and picked up the ribbon.
I tried threading it back through the dress loops, but my hands kept fumbling.
Should I ask Simon for help?
Just then, Ricardo came closer and took the ribbon from my hand without a word.
Realizing the awkwardness of the situation, I quickly tried to stop him.
âYou donât have to do this. Simon can help meââ
âAnd let your fiancĂŠ see you half-dressed in front of another man? Heâll be thrilled.â
 His tone dripped with sarcasm.
âThat Thomas guy is your fiancĂŠ, right?â
Oh, now he remembers saying he was âfamilyâ?
And besides, youâre another man too!
I had plenty to say, but it wasnât something a ânormalâ mage would argue about, so I stayed silent.
But Ricardoâs hands trembled slightly as he tried to tie the ribbon.
I finally spoke with a sigh,
 âItâs because your handâs injured.â
âItâd shake even if it werenât.â
âHuh?â
The moment I tilted my head in confusion, he stepped back and picked up the medical kit.
âIâll see you tomorrow.â
Seriously?!
I jumped up and blocked his way.
 âSit down.â
ââŚâ
 âJust sit for a moment.â
As I stepped closer, Ricardo stepped back.
âIf that wound gets worse, itâll hurt more than it does now.â
âI-Iâm fineââ
âWell, Iâm not.â
I pressed down on his shoulders, and he sank down onto the floor, without resistance.
Without hesitation, I snatched the kit from his hands.
âGive me your hand.â
ââŚâ
With no choice, Ricardo gave me his hand.
I gently cleaned the wound with disinfectant, and he flinched.
âSee? It does hurt.â
ââŚIt doesnât.â
I ignored him and wrapped a clean bandage around the injury.
Now for the restâŚ
While he let his guard down, I reached for his clothesâ
 But smack!
 He grabbed my wrist, startled.
ââŚ!â
He looked just as surprised as I was. His wide eyes said it wasnât intentional.
 Frowning, I asked,
âI just want to check the injuries.â
âI can do that myself.â
âEven the ones on your back? Are you seriously saying youâll treat wounds you canât even see?â
Ricardo nodded stiffly.
I gave a short, bitter laughâthen climbed on top of him.
ââŚ!â
He tried to stop me, but I quickly grabbed the front of his shirt.
Still, he wasnât easy to overpower.
âIâm barely injured, reallyââ
âSeriously? You rolled out of a moving carriage!â
I wasnât even bruised.
That meant⌠he had taken all the damage to protect me.
âŚOr maybe he just didnât want me touching him.
Is it because Iâm not a proper healer? Because he doesnât trust me?
Just as those thoughts began to swirlâ
âDuke! Ann! Iâm back with food!â
Simonâs cheerful voice came from outside.
Ricardo took that chance to push me aside and get up quickly.
***
âIt took a while to find a restaurant that was still open.â
 ââŚâŚâ
 ââŚâŚâ
Neither of us answered, so Simon looked at us awkwardly.
I quietly picked at the grilled fish, not tasting a thing.
Then Ricardo pushed his plate toward me.
The bones had all been neatly removed.
ââŚYou should eat it.â
âAt your pace, youâll be eating until sunrise,â he said casually.
I shot him a glare, and Simon, trying to ease the tension, smiled nervously.
âWell, uh, at least it tastes good, right?â
âItâs delicious. You worked hard.â
Though honestly, I couldnât taste anything after all that drama.
I wonder if thereâs a doctor nearbyâŚ
Simon leaned over and whispered,
âDid something happen while I was gone?â
âHaha, no.â
 ââŚIt doesnât seem like nothing.â
Ricardo stood up after finishing his meal.
 Simon blinked in surprise.
 âYouâre done already?â
ââŚEat more,â I muttered.
 Ricardo paused.
âYou havenât eaten anything since breakfast.â
âEat comfortably.â
Then he turned and went upstairs.
Only after that did Simon sigh in relief and finally pick up his fork.
âHeâs nicer than he looks.â
âBarely.â
âYou werenât eating because of him, werenât you?â
ââŚ.â
In the end, I didnât even know how I managed to finish the meal.
Later, I took the medical kit and knocked on Ricardoâs door.
Knock, knock.
âI might have gone too far earlier. I apologize.â
ââŚâ
âIâll leave the kit here. Please use it. Iâll look for a proper doctor tomorrow.â
Just as I turned to leave, I stopped.
Then I added, quietly,
ââŚThank you. For saving me.â
***
âOh! I can see the restricted zone now!â
Simon leaned out the cart window with a bright smile.
âThatâs the village I grew up in.â
I wonder if everything will be okay without Peril.
âBy the way, what happened to Thomas?â
âIâm not sure. But Lady Lily said he needs to rest for a while.â
Rest?
She never told me that. Is he sick?
Just then, the cart stopped.
Stretching my stiff limbs, I looked aheadâand saw a dark cave.
ââŚIs the village inside that cave?â
âThatâs called a tunnel,â Simon corrected gently.
 He pointed toward the entrance.
âOnce we go through, youâll see the village.â
Ricardo suddenly took my hand and removed a magical device from my wrist.
âOh, thatâs right!â Simon said.
âYou have to leave behind all your magic tools.â
He emptied his pockets, pulling out all kinds of items.
âLetâs hide them under that big rock.â
He struggled to lift it, but Ricardo stepped in and lifted it for him with ease.
âAh! Thank you!â
Simon dug a small hole and stashed the items.
Ricardo added his own bracelet to the pile.
âAlright. Letâs go,â Simon said with a hum and entered the tunnel.
Ricardo gave me a slight nod.
âStay close to me from now on.â
ââŚIs this really necessary for a magician?â
âIt is,â Ricardo said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Bianca’s ring is a magical device, too. This will get interesting.
Omg youâre right! I forgot about that đ
I know! I kept wondering about that since hearing they were going to a “no magic” zone!
Also I feel like Ricardo was scared if she sees his back she will think of him as a monster. Remembering how his mother looked at him when he showed her his wounds đ
Right ! I forgot about that
So sad đ
peril rest because of his heartbreak lol
Hold on !!
what about the ring????????????????????????
