~Chapter 61~
We ended up going back the way we came. By the time we got back, everyone was completely drunk and having a great time.
âHaha! Magic is truly a gift from the gods!â
We found a quiet corner and decided to eat first.
âSigh, that was such a waste of time,â Simon grumbled but still focused on eating.
Can he not do one thing at a time?!
Just then, Marcol hiccupped and stood up.
âA toast! To the glory of magic!â
Everyone lifted their glasses high. I wanted to raise mine too, but when I looked down, my glass had magically turned into juice. I sighed and lifted the juice instead.
BANG!
The door burst open, and Eliotâs playful voice rang out.
âSorry, weâre a bit late!â
My eyes darted toward the doorâand then I saw him.
âDuke!â
Marcol, clearly sobering up at the sight of Ricardo, rushed to greet him. The other mages didnât react much differently.
âI didnât want Erkessian to show upâbut I definitely didnât mean I wanted Ricardo instead!â
My hand holding the glass shook slightly.
âCareful.â
Peril snatched my glass from me, clearly annoyed.
âLord Hessen! Itâs been a while!â
Even Lily was clearly flustered as she stood to greet him.
Wait, Lilyâs flustered? I thought only Simon could make her like thatâŚ
âIf Iâd known this would happen, Iâd have come with you all from the Empire,â Ricardo said smoothly.
He and his group were calm. In contrast, the atmosphere in the room had grown stiff and tense.
âI heard the royal palace had prepared a welcome ceremony planned for Your Grace. Why are you here insteadâŚ?â
Marcol was sweating buckets.
âOh, come now, no need to get so tense, dear Vice-Commander! I wanted to ask Lady Lily for a favor and say hi to you tooâitâs been a while.â
Was there a problem between Orphen and Ricardoâs side? He definitely didnât look like he had just come from a ceremonyâŚ
âY-you mean me?â
Lily asked, still looking totally thrown off.
âLetâs not get into the details yetâyou must all be tired.â
âMind if we join you?â
Ricardoâs tone was way more commanding than polite.
âŚThatâs what he calls a request?
âO-of course! Itâs an honor!â
Marcol wiped his sweat and signaled the servants.
Ricardoâs knights started sitting down one by one, and the room quickly grew noisy again.
âOh, so thatâs Duke Hessen.â
âSo thatâs Duke Hessen,â Simon whispered, eyes locked on Ricardo.
âYou knew who he was?â I asked.
âOf course. Heâs famous.â
âThen why didnât I know?â
âWellâŚâ
Simon looked at me with sympathyâbut stopped himself from saying anything.
Hey, whyâd you stop? What were you going to say?
âI figured itâd just hurt your feelings. So Iâll keep it to myself.â
âThat hurts more!â
I frowned.
I really didnât expect to run into Ricardo here.
Thank goodness for the disguise ring.
I silently thanked Peril and turned my attention elsewhere.
But no matter how hard I tried, my thoughts kept drifting back to Ricardo.
I poked at my salad absentmindedly.
Simon leaned in, worried.
âAnn, your face is pale. Are you okay?â
âNot really,â I muttered.
Peril cut in suddenly and grabbed my salad away.
âH-hey! Why are you taking that?!â
âEat meat.â
He looked annoyed.
I had no idea what set him off, but he was definitely not in a good mood.
âAt least pretend to be fine, unless you want people to notice.â
âO-okay.â
âThomas is right. You need strength after today.â
Simon added cheerfully, sneaking a tomato onto my plate.
ââŚThomas said meat, not vegetables.â
âYou have to eat balanced meals.â
âJust admit you like tomatoes.â
Simon smiled awkwardly to deflect. I forced myself to eat the tomato, trying to ignore Ricardo.
But before I knew it, my eyes wandered back to him again.
ââŚâ
Something felt⌠different.
It was my first time seeing Ricardo act like the head of the Hessen family. When we were engaged, he always acted more like a fiancĂŠ than a duke. Now, he seemed distantâhard to approach.
Sharp jawline, icy blue eyes, a cold, intense aura.
Even his blank stare made people around him go quiet.
âŚRight. Heâs always been like this, I reminded myself. Or at least, thatâs how I remembered him.
But something felt⌠off.
Sure, he looked refined and calm like a proper dukeâBut his pale fingers trembled slightly as he adjusted his collar.
He held his glass for too long, his eyes staring into nothing.
A brief pause, a flicker of emptiness in his gaze. That wasnât like him.
Ricardo was never good at hiding his emotions.
When he couldnât save me, he hadnât even tried to mask his feelings.
And the last time we saw each other, heâd completely broken down.
Maybe heâs okay nowâŚ
After all, Iâd been feeling guilty about hurting him.
So⌠maybe this is a relief?
Still, the discomfort lingered.
Maybe I just didnât recognize the Duke side of him.
Even Elliot and Rose seemed to treat him like normal, though.
I felt myself relax a little.
But thenâour eyes met.
ââŚ!â
Since when has he been staring at me?!
Panic bubbled up inside.
I wanted to look away, but instead, I bit the inside of my cheek.
Noble ladies arenât supposed to look away first, right?
Just act normalâŚ
I gave him a polite nod and quickly turned my head.
As I let out a breath of relief, I noticed Peril squinting at me.
ââŚW-what?â
âJust annoyed.â
âWait, why? Is this because I took your meat? Fine, here!â
I quickly piled some meat onto his plate.
âThere, happy?â
Peril let out a dry laugh like he didnât even know what to say.
At that moment, Lilyâs voice rose from Ricardoâs direction.
âYou need a mage?â
âYes. Iâm visiting Lady Siren tomorrow. And apparently, I must bring a mage along.â
Eliotâs expression turned deadly seriousâsomething Iâd never seen before.
âBut there are no royal mages in the kingdomâŚâ
âWe werenât told about this in advance,â Lily said, frustrated.
He glanced around uncomfortably.
âYou didnât give us any notice, so weâre in a bit of a bind.â Lily sighed.
Ahâso Ricardo came to check Sirenâs tomb. Makes sense.
Siren was the only surviving suspect of the attack. But it didnât sound like the kingdom was eager to show him the tomb.
Marcol looked completely panicked, caught between Lily and Ricardo.
âWell, itâs good timing since the Mage Tower just happened to visit Orphen.â
âOf course. Iâm glad I can be of help,â Lily replied, adding that it was a great honor for any mage to assist.
âThen, does Your Grace have a specific mage in mind? Luckily, all of the ones here are quite skilled.â
âThatâs good to hear.â
Elliot gave a weird laugh and glanced at Ricardo.
I figured theyâd pick Lilyâsheâs the best here, other than Peril.
So I turned to Simon and asked,
âShall we head back now? Weâve got a full schedule tomorrow.â
He nodded, but then his eyes widened as he spotted something behind me.
âAnnâŚ?â
He tapped my shoulder urgently.
I suddenly felt a shadow fall over me.
Something felt⌠ominous.
I turned slowlyâ
and met Ricardoâs gaze.
He was staring directly at me.
âŚWait. Is he looking at⌠me?

Ah did he recognize her? đ
Also Iâm getting the feeling that Peril is liking Bianca romantically instead of liking idette. I got that feeling when he said âthereâs no way Iâd confuse you with idetteâ during the imperial ball. Thatâs probably why he keeps getting annoyed anytime Bianca brings up Ricardo
Hahahahaha. Did you expect otherwise, Bianca?
i think he recognized her
Of course he did
