~Chapter 60~
âWelcome to Orphen!â
After suffering from seasickness for days, Simon finally perked up as the kingdom came into view.
âBiancâuh, I mean Annâyouâll definitely love it here!â
He looked happy, and it was nice to see.
But now that he was acting like his usual self again⌠his expression was starting to get on my nerves.
As we were unloading the ship, Lily lightly scolded him.
âSimon, weâre not here on vacation.â
Normally heâd get sulky after that, but Simon proudly replied,
âDonât worry! I know that already!â
Luckily, Lily seemed to like seeing him in high spirits.
âAfter tomorrowâs schedule, youâll have some free time. Go see your family then.â
âOkay! But donât just stand thereâcome help with the luggage!â
Barely managing to stand on my wobbly legs, I shouted, and Simon rushed over.
âS-sorry!â
Still, I couldnât help but smile at his excitement.
I kind of understood how he felt.
âItâs been a while since youâve been back to Orphen, huh?â
âYeah, about three years.â
âThat long? Wait, then how old were you when you went to the Empire?â
Considering his age now, he mustâve been just a kid.
âI first went to Carpea when I was eleven. It was just a trip with my family⌠but I fell in love with magic.â
ââŚâ
âMy family was against it, but Iâm the type who canât hold back when I want something. So I just went and knocked on the Mage Tower door.â
Simon scratched his head awkwardly.
Lily, who had been listening, chimed in.
âPeril wasnât there at the time, so we told him we couldnât take students. But he just hung around the tower for days.â
âI-I couldnât help it! I had no money left to go back homeâŚâ
âOh.â
So heâs got more guts than I thought.
Simon muttered under his breath, looking a bit bitter.
âAnd I really wanted to find out something back then.â
âWhat was it?â
At my question, Simon smirked mysteriously.
âJust⌠something.â
ââŚâ
âSomething youâd never understand, Ann.â
Ugh. Why did I even bring him?
âAlright, thatâs enough chatting,â Lily cut in, gathering us back to focus.
âWe need to reach the capital by tonight. Letâs keep going.â
Looking at the huge pile of crates on the terrace made me sigh.
And watching Peril just standing there all relaxed made it worse.
Finally, I snapped at him.
âWow, must be nice to have free time.â
âLeaders never do anything, you know.â
âBut youâre not Peril right now, youâre Thomas.â
âSame difference.â
He gave me a smug little smile. Still annoyed, I asked something that had been bugging me.
âWhy are you wearing a ring?â
He didnât need one to disguise himself like I did. He changes appearances like changing clothes.
âJust being polite?â
âWhat kind of strange etiquette is that?â
âOrphen-style, I suppose.â
I was trying to poke at him, but he didnât seem affected at all.
I sighed and looked toward the port, where ships were coming, and on top of them, waving the Carpea Empireâs flag.
âŚIs that a delegation from the palace, after the recent attack?
Please donât let Erkessian be on one of those ships.
As I was having that random thought, Peril grabbed my chin and turned my face toward him.
âYouâve got luggage to move, remember?â
ââŚSo mean.â
âYou think weâve got time to be slacking off?â
He gave me a little push, basically telling me to get back to work.
***
One thing I learned from all this:
The most important trait for a mage isnât mana.
Itâs stamina. Damn stamina!
I was worried we wouldnât make it to the palace before sunset, but thankfully, we got there just in time.
âLord Marcol, itâs been a while. Thank you for welcoming us so warmly.â
With Peril ânot officially present,â Lily acted as the Mage Towerâs representative. She greeted a kind-looking middle-aged man with a warm smile.
He welcomed us with genuine hospitality.
âOh, no need to thank me. Weâre grateful for your visit.â
I expected some tension due to the Mage War, but surprisingly, everyone seemed friendlyâeven the people around him werenât giving us dirty looks.
Peril noticed my confusion and leaned in to whisper:
âOrphen loves magic.â
âOh, really?â
âBecause of that, we have a pretty good relationship with them.â
Makes sense. The Mage Tower is the only place that deals with magic tools now.
Thatâs why they were after Dremokan tooâbecause magic is convenient.
âI get why Ailins wanted Orphen to win the war nowâŚâ
âYou must be tired from the journey. Please relax tonight. Weâve also prepared a meal, so come on in.â
At Marcolâs words, cheers erupted from the others.
âCanât wait to catch up with Lord Marcol.â
âGlad we brought wine!â
As Lily and Marcol chatted, Simon started shifting on his feet like he wanted to leave already.
Lily noticed and gave him a light reminder.
âSimon, be back by 10 a.m. tomorrow, okay?â
âYes, maâam! Thank you!â
Then he turned to me.
âSee you tomorrow, Ann.â
âTake care.â
He was already gone before I finished the sentence.
Man, he was really excited.
âShall we go too?â
Peril asked, and I nodded quietly.
After we slipped away, I brought up something Iâd been meaning to ask.
âRemember that eccentric guy you mentioned?â
âYeah.â
âHow did he even figure out there were other worlds?â
Most people wouldnât notice something like that.
Even I just thought Iâd been thrown into a fictional story.
âIt started as a theory. Just a random curiosityââthereâs no way weâre the only timeline out there.ââ
ââŚâ
âBut your existence proved the theory.â
âI think I explained it pretty vaguely, but⌠you still figured it all out.â
Honestly, I thought Peril would press me for more details.
âIâm smarter than I look.â
âCanât argue with that.â
We were chatting when I squinted at a familiar face up ahead.
âHuh? Simon?â
ââŚBianca?â
Simon looked just as surprised.
âWhy are you back?â
He looked a little awkward.
âUh⌠the shortcut was blocked. If I took the long way, I wouldnât make it back by morning. So Iâm going to visit my family later instead.â
Yikes. I could still remember how excited he was beforeâŚ
I felt a little bad for himâuntil Peril spoke in a cold voice.
âThat path doesnât lead to the village.â
ââŚ!â
âThereâs no way the shortcut to the village is blocked.â
Simonâs eyes darted like a lost child.
âYou lied to me?â
The mood instantly turned icy. Simon panicked and shook his head.
âN-no! Itâs not a lie! I was going to see my family, but⌠not in the village.â
ââŚâ
âI was headed toward the magic-restricted zone.â
âŚThe what?
Peril narrowed his eyes, clearly surprised.
âWait⌠is that where youâre from?â
âYeah.â
It mustâve been rare. Peril tapped his arm in thought.
âThe shortcut being blocked, huhâŚâ
Were we heading there too?
âI heard there was an incident involving outsiders a few months ago. Securityâs super tight now.â
Peril sighed.
Simon added in a shaky voice:
âIâm worried about my family. But apparently, the only way in is by a special carriage that goes there every two weeks.â
âYou canât use magic there either?â
Simon answered instead:
âItâs the most closed-off area in the kingdom. If you try to use magic, your power just disappears. You canât even enter without a special pass.â
No wonder Peril didnât teleport there.
âWhenâs the next carriage?â
âIn two days.â
After listening to them, I spoke up.
âThen we have no choice. Our business will be done by then anyway. Letâs go together.â
Simon blinked.
âWait⌠But why are you going there?â
âI have my reasons.â
ââŚ?â
âSomething youâd never understand.â
Simon shut his mouth quietly â for once, speechless.
Congrats, Simon! You’ve become her little brother
