~Chapter 62~Â
âI want to take this mage with me.â
Of course. That bad feeling I had? It was never wrong.
Ricardo said those words without hesitation. And right after, Lily ran over in a panic.
âD-Duke Hessen, this girl isâ!â
âYouâre not going to take your words back now, are you?ââ
His voice was cold enough to give me chills.â
“You said everyone here is a reliable mage.”
âI heard it clearly!ââ
Elliot, standing nearby, quickly jumped in to back him up.â
 âLady Lily definitely said so.â
Elliot, you little traitorâŚ
âI mean, I did say something like that, but⌠sheâs still an apprentice mage.ââ
 ââŚHah.ââ
âShe canât even use proper mana yet.â
While Lily rushed to explain, Peril cut in.
âSheâs not good enough to be by your side, my lord. Maybe itâd be better to look for another mage?ââ
His tone sounded light, almost amused, but his eyes were deadly serious.
âThere are plenty of mages around here, after all.â
Peril leaned back in his chair slowly.â
 âIs she your fiancĂŠe?â
Ricardo asked, voice eerily low and cold.
âYeah.ââ
Peril replied without hesitation, which honestly caught me off guard.â
I blinked in surprise.
Wait, since when?!
But⌠who would believe that?
I mean, weâve got the same hair and eye color, and our faces are super average and almost identical. Who wouldnât raise an eyebrow?
Ricardo seemed to have the same thought because I heard a dry, amused laugh escape him.
âIf family members wear rings on their fourth fingers, people get the wrong idea.â
âDoes it matter if itâs family or fiancĂŠe?â Peril replied smoothly. âWhatâs important is that theyâre by your side.â
The blue veins on the back of Perilâs hand were standing out.â
God, is he even trying to hide who he really is?
Using informal speech to a duke? Any normal mage would never dare.
âTaking a kid who canât even properly use mana⌠Thatâs just your stubbornness, my Lord.ââ
Gasps rang out from all around.
Does Peril⌠not know what a normal mage should or shouldnât do?â
If not⌠then heâs seriously insane.â Well, I donât know either.
âYeah. I just do odd jobs at the mage tower. I wouldnât be any help to you, Your Grace.â
Getting out of this situation was my top priority, so I quickly played along with Perilâs words. And just then, Simon mustâve decided things were getting out of hand, because he suddenly stood up from his seat.
Yes! To fix this mess, Simon!
âUh, Annâs caused a lot of trouble at the tower! Sheâs got zero talent for magic! Lady Lily scolds her every day! Sheâs seriously the worst of the worst, and if she goes with you, sheâll definitely be a burden!â
You absolute idiot, you couldâve just called me trash and been done with it! His ruthless ranting left me completely speechless.â Can people get so dumbfounded they forget how to talk?
I was so shocked, I couldnât even speak. Apparently, when youâre too shocked, you go silent.
Ricardo let out a short laugh.â
âWhy do you have so many protectors?â he said.
ââŚâ
âItâs annoying.â
There was a faint, chilling edge in his voiceâenough to make Simon hiccup in fear.
âAll I need is someone to fill the role. Just enough to look right. Why is this so hard?â
He turned his icy gaze directly on me.
Just then, Elliot stepped in again, trying to smooth things over.
âThereâs really nothing the mage has to do. His Highness wonât want someone with overwhelming power like Lady Lily. Itâs fine.â
âR-Really? I was just worried Iâd be a burdenâŚââ
 Please, someone save me!
But Elliot only smiled and delivered the final blow:
âYou donât need to worry. The Duke will be with you, after all. Just stay close to him.â
Thatâs the problemâŚ!
Lily sighed deeply.
âIf the Duke insists, we wonât stop him. Ann, you heard that, right?â
At this point, saying no would just make things worse for Lily.
Fine. Iâm disguised anyway. What could go wrong?
ââŚIâll do my best to be helpful to the Duke.â
I said it through clenched teeth.
Forcing myself to smile, I gave my answer.
âIâll do my best to be of help to you⌠Your Grace.â
***
Later that night, on the way back to our rooms.
âHey, wait!â
I hurried after Peril, who was walking ahead of me.
âCanât we go back together?â
Why was he in such a hurry?
âH-Hold on!â
Out of breath, I finally got him to stop. He turned around, surprised.
ââŚOh.â
Did he just now realize I was following him?
I caught up and breathed deeply.
 âYou walk so fast.â
âWhy are you even following me?â
Wow. Blaming me now?
 âYou didnât look happy.â
 ââŚâ
âAlso, you were walking in the wrong direction. Our rooms are that way.â
I nodded in the correct direction.
 âCome on. Simonâs waiting too.â
Even though I knew Peril didnât plan to come back, I followed him anyway.
Even Simon had told me to go after him.
Why do I always have to handle everything?
Thankfully, Peril quietly followed me back.
Trying to lighten his mood, I chatted as we walked.
âSimon said thereâs a lot to see where weâre going. Lots of food too.â
 ââŚâ
âI got a ton of money out of Simon. I plan to drain his wallet, so you have to come!â
To my relief, Peril gave a soft chuckle.
âYou really donât give people time to be sad, do you?â
âWell, Iâve been sad before. And I found that noisy places help the most.â
With me and Simon around, itâd be as noisy as it gets.
âNo thanks. Whatâs the point of playing with kids?â
âDidnât you say you were young not long ago?â
âWhy do you always remember the useless stuff?â
He glared at me briefly, then let out a long sigh.
âDonât do that,â he said quietly.
 ââŚDo what?â
âDonât make it so hard to let go.â
He lightly tapped my forehead. I rubbed the spot and mumbled,
 âHow is that my fault?â
âIt is your fault.â
 His voice dropped softer.
ââŚCanât you just stay here with us?â
âOnly if you promise not to die and stay with me too.â
ââŚMaybe I will.â
I froze.
I was jokingâbut he answered so seriously.
Then he laughed like it was no big deal.
 âIâm kidding.â
âŚOf course he was.
Still, my throat felt dry. I clenched the fabric of my dress tightly and bit my lip.
How am I supposed to ignore this?
I couldnât pretend not to notice anymore.
I couldnât laugh it off or act like I didnât understand how Peril felt.
This is driving me crazy.
At first, I thought I was imagining things.
I kept telling myselfâthereâs no way he likes me. He loves Idette.
But as this world became more real and my old logic started to fade, I couldnât ignore it anymore.
His feelings were too clear now.
I couldnât pretend I didnât see it.
I was truly thankful to Peril. But accepting his feelings? That wasnât right.
Because our hearts were going in different directions.
âIâve thought a lot about why I kept denying reality,â I said quietly.
ââŚâ
âI think it was because I had a place to return to. I didnât want to get too attached here.â
If I fully accepted this world as real⌠I might forget the people waiting for me back home.
âI donât hate this world. But I still have people whoâd be worried if I disappeared.â
My family was probably so scared.
I couldnât be happy here while they suffered.
âThatâs why⌠I have to go back.â
Peril paused for a long moment, then sighed.
ââŚForget what I just said.â
 âHaha⌠too late! I already did.â
I laughed awkwardly and waved when I saw Simon waiting nearby.
***
The next day.
ââŚGood morning.â
 I greeted Ricardo awkwardly.
He gave a small nod in return.
And just like that, an uncomfortable journey began.

Hm. I don’t feel like I have much of a handle on what her life was before waking up as Bianca, but then again, that applies to a a number of aspects of the story. XD
suddenly peril already like her? hmm? isnt that too fast. well, at this point im not gonna surprise if crown prince suddenly come to like her
