Chapter 16

I couldn’t hear what he said after that anymore, because the people beating him were no longer just Tang Li alone. All around me, my university classmates—and even some unfamiliar onlooking passersby—had crowded together, each of them throwing punches and kicks as they beat him in a group. Whatever he was saying, of course I couldn’t hear it clearly anymore.

“Leave him with a breath so he can sign the divorce agreement.” I gritted my teeth as I looked at him lying in a sorry state on the ground.

Yu Jin’s screams rang out in my ears again and again, but at this moment, the anger I had suppressed in my heart for so long finally erupted under his oppression. I had not the slightest intention of pitying him. Amid the struggle in my heart, there was instead an indescribable sense of pleasure.

More and more people gathered around. Yu Jin’s screams gradually drew the attention of the venue’s management staff, and this farce was quickly brought to a halt. By the end, Yu Jin’s face had already become blurry in my eyes. Many parts of his body were bruised and bleeding, and he looked extremely ferocious.

I watched as he was pulled up by the security guards and dragged toward the back. There was already not a shred of feeling left in my heart. From the moment I found out that this man had brought another woman home, all the affection I once had for him had been completely replaced by disgust.

From the corridor to the main entrance, Yu Jin’s groans echoed the entire way. His eyes stared at me viciously, and even at the moment he was taken away, the look in his eyes never changed.

I almost wanted to laugh. From tonight on, the only thing left between the two of us was a single divorce agreement.

More than two years of feelings were severed tonight. Just thinking about it felt utterly ridiculous.

I slumped down, reached out, and picked up a glass filled with yellow liquid, pouring the bitterness mixed with heartache straight into my stomach. One glass after another.

Voices of persuasion sounded all around my ears, but at this moment, all I could see was the alcohol. The craving in my heart made me want to get myself drunk, not wanting to face this ironclad reality.

A thick, strong hand grabbed my wrist just as my consciousness began to blur. I only impatiently shook it off, raised my arm, and continued pouring alcohol into my stomach.

Tang Li placed his hand across my wrist. “Don’t drink anymore. He’s not worth it.”

There was a gentle look in his eyes. Among so many former classmates here, he was the only one who reached out to stop me. It made me feel deeply sarcastic.

Why is it that the men who end up with me are all like this? Was he laughing at my man, or was he laughing at me?

I flung his hand away and poured a glass of wine straight into my mouth. The icy liquid slid down the corner of my lips, the wet sensation making my whole body feel even more overheated.

“That’s enough. There’s no need to drink yourself into trouble for that kind of man!”

Tang Li’s broad arms wrapped directly around my body. With an irresistible force in his hands, he pulled me up, and my whole body fell into his embrace.

“What are you doing?!”

“That’s enough! Stop drinking!”

The man’s roar struck my ears like a clap of thunder.

I stared blankly as the old friends around us dispersed, leaving only the two of us in the venue. The cool, distant singing gradually became clear in my ears, and the drunken haze from just now vanished in an instant.

“Tang Li, this has nothing to do with you. It’s me, Meng Yanshuang, who was blind. Not a single man I chose was any good. I’m just a jinx!” I screamed hysterically, releasing all the dissatisfaction that had piled up in my heart over these years, without holding anything back.

I felt that I was simply an unfortunate woman, that all misfortune had fallen on me alone. To me, family was a joke. I could already imagine that after divorcing Yu Jin, I would be nothing but secondhand goods, someone no one would ever look at again.
