Chapter – 51

Mukai’s Memories

Leaving Adachi in Reiōā€™s care,

Mukai entered the break room.

It seemed the others had returned,

and they immediately started firing questions at him.

ā€œAdachi collapsed?ā€

Tadokoro asked.

ā€œSince we’re already dead, can we even die from illness?ā€

ā€œMakino, don’t say such ominous things.ā€

ā€œWhat caused it?ā€

Even Sakuma, unusually flustered, asked.

ā€œW-wait, wait a moment, please,ā€

Mukai held back the people pressing toward him and stepped back.

ā€œSee? Mukai-kun’s troubled. Everyone, have a seat.ā€

ā€œThank you, Makiko-san,ā€

Mukai looked up at the ceiling, took a deep breath, and decided to only share what he could.

ā€œTo get straight to the point,

Adachi-kun apparently has a naturally rare spiritual medium ability.

So, when spirit-versus-spirit confrontations continue,

he loses control,

and it puts a strain on his body.

For now, though, there’s no immediate problem,

so please don’t worry.ā€

ā€œAh, that’s a relief. It’s nothing serious.ā€

Saki smiled, letting out a sigh of relief.

Having witnessed the moment he collapsed,

she had been understandably worried.

ā€œReiō is watching over him now, so he’s fine.

He’ll rest for a while,

so please plan accordingly.ā€

ā€œBut doesn’t that make teaming up with him dangerous?ā€

ā€œYes. For the time being, I’ll partner with Adachi-kun.ā€

ā€œThen Mukai, wouldn’t that put you at risk?ā€

ā€œThe dangerous areas are Makino-kun’s responsibility, so it should be fine.ā€

ā€œTch, I see how it is,ā€

Makino muttered, clearly annoyed,

ā€œGuess I’ll just let Adachi do the easy work.ā€

She plopped down on the sofa with a thud.

ā€œMakino-kun is such a good kid,ā€

Mukai said.

ā€œD-don’t call me a good kid. I’m not a child!!ā€

Mukai placed his hand on her head from behind.

ā€œStop that,ā€

Makino swatted his hand away, and Mukai said,

ā€œYou really are stubborn~ā€

Nitta, who had come in afterward, laughed.

ā€œI just checked on Adachi-kun.

He said he was hungry and went to the cafeteria with Yayoi-chan.

Youth is wonderful, isn’t it?ā€

When Nitta said that,

Makino and Saki dashed off.

ā€œBusy, aren’t they?ā€

Sakuma laughed.

ā€œI’ll go check on Adachi-kun too.ā€

ā€œWell then, I’ll come too,ā€

Tadokoro said, following her out of the room.

Even Adachi, who grew up without knowing love,

had people here who cared for him,

people who cherished him.

He was allowed a place to rely on, even after death.

Whether that could be called happiness was unclear,

but it seemed necessary for him now.

ā€œAdachi-kun is a bit of a stubborn child,

but to me, he’s adorable.

He’s loved by everyone, and I think he’s happy here.ā€

Makiko smiled gently at Mukai, who was lost in thought, and said,

ā€œShall I make some tea? Nitta-kun, do you want some?ā€

ā€œI’ll have some. I’ll help you.ā€

He followed Makiko.

Watching over Adachi,

Mukai found himself recalling his own missing memories.

What was that about?

It felt like he could remember, but he couldn’t…

Probably, it had something to do with his own death…

But still, he couldn’t remember…

Leaning back on the sofa,

Mukai closed his eyes, weary.

This story depicts the everyday life of the Underworld as it clashes with the human world — a nation ruled through human sacrifices.

Even the Underworld earns money through markets and gathers funds for living together with yokai and ghost writers.

They exorcise evil spirits in the human world for no pay, and the later part of the story follows what happens after divine punishment begins to fall upon humans who commit deicide.
Some of this continuation is touched upon in the side stories, so please give them a read as well.

This is a world teeming with the Underworld, shinigami (death gods), humans, ghosts, and yokai...

The nation within the story is covered in evil spirits born from people’s negative emotions.
Special agents belonging to the Underworld continue to work for the sake of these people — even after death.

From natural disasters caused by earthquakes to various rituals, the story does contain some intense scenes midway through.
However, aside from those, the overall tone is that of a gentle, slow-life story set in the Underworld.

The main story is complete, though the emotional issues of the citizens leave the fate of the nation unresolved.

With the introduction of adorable little yokai, the story also portrays adults getting wrapped up in the antics of children, so even ritual scenes are depicted in a soft, approachable way.

The first arc mainly focuses on introducing the protagonists.
The plot starts to delve into the core of the story from the second arc onward.
A major storyline concludes in the eighth arc, and from the ninth arc, a new battle begins.

This is not a revenge story, a noble/aristocratic drama, or a romance — so if that’s what you’re looking for, this might not be the right fit.

I’d be delighted if you could spare a little of your precious time to read this as a modern fantasy.

This story is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real people, organizations, or places is purely coincidental.
