chapter 6
āGood morning, Lady Marie! What a lovely morning it is today! Please, look outside!ā
Ah, Helen⦠what a perfect morning indeed.
Ah, Helen⦠my angel.
Itās been two weeks since Operation Big Brother Disaster.
Since then, Iāve shared a bed with Helen only once. Of course, I didnāt lay a hand on her. I only kissed her adorable cheek once.
I think weāve gotten much closer since then. After all, sheās now calling me āLady Marieā ā such a sweet nickname! You canāt blame me if I get a little giddy about it.
āHelen⦠you shine again today. Your smile outshines even the sun.ā
āOh, Lady Marie⦠then on rainy days, I must always stay by your side to make sure you can still see me smile, mustnāt I?ā
āEhehe!ā
Ah!! Helen!! What is this unbearable cuteness!? I want to press my lips to those blushing cheeks so badly!
āIf the rain meant I could hold onto you forever, then Iād wish for it to rain every single day.ā
āLady Marie⦠thatās embarrassing.ā
Helen⦠I think I might get a nosebleed. Yes, Iām aware Iām a pervert.
And so begins another perfectly normal day.
āGood morning, Marie.ā
āGood morning, Father, Mother, Lord Leon.ā
Some things have changed since then.
When I stopped calling them āPapaā and āMama,ā my parents looked a little lonely.
Theyāve finally allowed me to use the stairs by myself.
The distance between my parents and Lord Leon has softened ā the air between them feels warmer now.
Our family bonds have grown deeper, and yet for some reason, Leon told me I shouldnāt call him āBrotherā anymore.
Am I⦠being left out? No, no tears. Marie is a strong girlā¦
The seating arrangement at the dining table has changed, too.
Before, my parents used to sit on either side of me ā the messy, runaway child who couldnāt finish her meals.
Now, they sit across from me, and Lord Leon is beside me.
Thatās⦠probably the āproperā way things are supposed to be.
My parents and Leon still talk slowly and calmly ā maybe theyāve always been that way.
Our after-meal chatting time continues as usual.
During the afternoon āhappy timeā with Helen and Rufus, Leon joins us now, too.
The twins used to be nervous, but lately, theyāve started smiling more softly ā so cute.
Now, after lunch, Iām spending some quiet time in Leonās room⦠and facing a major problem.
āHey, Brother?ā
āLeon.ā
āā¦Lord Leon.ā
āMarie? You need to listen properly. Go on, say it. Itās āLeon.āā
āBig brooootheeer~!ā
āAre you planning to act like a fool again? Iāll get angry, you know.ā
āThat would be troublesome.ā
āIām the one whoās troubled here.ā
And there it is again. For some reason, Leon refuses to let me call him āBrother,ā or even āLord Leon.ā
When I tried to consult my parents about it, they just gave me a warm, knowing smile and told me to ācall him however he wants.ā
What on earth did this ninja do to them?
Leon may be my brother for now, but eventually heāll return to the dukeās household and become the head of the family.
Thereās no way a mysterious silver-haired chick like me could ever call him by name so casually.
I get that being called āBrotherā by a girl he doesnāt want as his fiancĆ©e might be inconvenient when he returns home ā but for now, isnāt it fine?
If people outside saw a young lady calling her older brother by name, theyād think I was poorly raised!
Canāt he at least allow me to add āLordā for the sake of dignity?
āLeon⦠sama.ā
āI canāt answer to that. You can say my name properly, canāt you? Youāre a fine young lady now.ā
āI think a fine lady wouldnāt call her brother by name.ā
āAh, thatās true ā if he were her brother. You, however, are hopelessly slow in realizing certain things. Iāll have to keep an eye on you to make sure no weird pests come near.ā
He says this while sipping tea elegantly, looking at me like Iām some sort of chick heās studying.
Lately, his smile hasnāt been a gentle one ā itās kind of scary.
He has this soft aura, but his presence is so overwhelming I canāt resist him.
As expected of my āmost belovedā brother. Or⦠my obsession?
āBut if I canāt call you brother, then isnāt it improper for a lady to call a man by his first name?ā
āThatās a good question. Youāve seen how Father and Mother call each other by name, havenāt you?ā
āThatās because theyāre Father and Mother.ā
āAnd thatās the correct answer, Marie. You see, I made a promise with Father and Mother.
I wasnāt supposed to tell you until I turn ten, but⦠Iād like to tell you sooner ā to make you aware of it.ā
āWhat do you mean?ā
Heās pretending to act mysterious, but I already know.
Heās going to return to the ducal household when he turns ten.
āHehe. Then hereās a hint. Right now, youāre hugging a stuffed bear ā but two years from now, youāll be holding something very different.ā
I tilted my head and looked at the bear plushie I was hugging to avoid his gaze.
What? Whatās that supposed to mean?
What connection could there possibly be between a duke and a stuffed bear?
āHehe. And after a few more years, youāll be the one being held. Iām looking forward to it.ā
āā¦Do you mean the bear is going to grow bigger?ā
Leon burst out laughing.
I had no idea what he meant.
Maybe he plans to give me a slightly bigger bear every birthday?
Ah, that must be it. Heās just in a Santa Claus kind of mood.
With his ninja skills, leaving a stuffed bear by my pillow should be easy for him.
āWell, I donāt really get it, but Iām glad youāre having fun, Lord Leon.ā
āLeon.ā
āā¦.ā
And again, we loop back to this.
āYouāre kind and warmhearted, Marie. You treat everyone equally, without bias. Thatās a wonderful thing.ā
āEh? Ah⦠thank you.ā
āBut Marie, youāre also very beautiful, and your smile enchants everyone. When people meet your eyes, theyāll all fall to their knees.ā
That⦠sounds awfully similar to something I said to Helen recently.
As expected, even without blood ties, we really are siblings.
āThatās why, Marie⦠sometimes you need to make distinctions.
Yes ā especially with me. I donāt want you to lump me together with everyone else. Do you understand?ā
āYou mean you want me to treat you specially?ā
Leon set down his teacup and smiled sweetly.
āYouāre very clever, Marie. Exactly. So you must call me by my name.
Thatās an absolute rule ā one that can never be overturned.ā
āā¦If I donāt give in, thisāll go on forever, wonāt it?ā
āForever, huhā¦? Yes, thatās right. You and I will be forever.ā
Right. He really wonāt give up ā not just āforever continuing,ā but eternally.
Heās incredibly stubborn.
Even if heās not my brother, maybe I could call him by name just until he returns to the dukeās house ā then Iāll stop.
āā¦Leon.ā
āGood girl, Maria.ā
He smiled and patted my head, looking more satisfied than Iāve seen him in days.
But⦠there was something a little frightening in his eyes.
āBig brother.ā
āā¦Did you say something?ā
āNope. Nothing at all.ā
āI seeā¦ā
That was really scary just now.
