Chapter : 59
Mehen groaned at the sight of the official letter placed before him.
It was rare to see Mehen looking this troubled, so Dylan shamelessly watched with interest.
âWhatâs the matter?â
ââŚSomethingâs the matter.â
â?â
Not in a good mood?
Mehen gave a vague answer, but his gaze remained fixed on the northern fortressâs exclusive communication sphere, which was still showing a âconnectingâ status.
The line had been dead for days now.
âSeems like the northern fortress is busy.â
Dylan didnât think much of it, but Mehen couldnât shake a vague sense of unease.
There was no way Jaren had been taken out by monsters, and even if the fortress had been vacated, it didnât make sense for it to be for this long.
âDid the Sky Tower send a reply?â
âApparently theyâll be visiting for the upcoming Founding Festival. From what the Foreign Affairs Office said, the preliminary arrangements are turning out to be quite complicated.â
âI suppose so.â
Hadnât it been 154 years since the last visit from the Sky Tower? It was no surprise that people from all over would be scrambling to make connections and gain favor.
There were mage towers everywhere, but the authority of the Sky Tower was untouchable.
âItâs going to be exhausting.â
Mehen pressed his fingertips to his brow and let out a dry sigh.
In truth, he wasnât interested in the âprofitsâ the Sky Tower could bring.
His only concern was whether they could heal Arellin.
The mage towers said it was impossible, but maybe the Sky Tower will be different.
Mehen still hadnât given up hope.
âCome to think of it, Iâve heard Arellâs been acting strangely lately.â
âAh, yes. Sheâs been going out much more than usualâwhich is unlike herâand the other day she even went to see the familyâs mage.â
âMagicâŚ? Does she want to learn it?â
âMore like she wants to study in general, I think? I heard she even went to the library.â
âThe library?â
âBecause of that, Lenny got all excited and brought me a thirteen-year academic plan.â
Dylan placed a thick stack of documents on Mehenâs deskâLenaâs enthusiastic academic curriculum for Arellin.
âStudying, huhâŚâ
The truth was, Arellin had never received much education compared to others her age.
She was too frail to even go outside, so the idea of putting her through rigorous studies never came up. Sheâd only received the bare minimum.
âWhat does the doctor think?â
âAfter consulting with Yuni and the physician, they agreed she can handle one or two hours of lessons, three or four times a week.â
Now that he thought about it, his lady had always loved books.
Perhaps it wasnât the books themselves she loved, but the act of learning?
If Arellin heard that, sheâd surely scoff and call it nonsenseâbut Mehen was deep in that misunderstanding when the door suddenly burst open and Arellin walked in.
âMy lady!â
These days, barging into Mehenâs office had become routine, but today she seemed especially riled.
âArell.â
Seeing her frowning face, Mehen tried his best to sound gentle.
âIs something wrong?â
Fortunately, his effort seemed to workâArellin responded.
âMehen.â
âYes.â
âDo you know how to get rid of a nasty stalker?â
ââŚWhat?â
âTraining again today?â
Ahâ!
âWerenât you just working out?â
âNo, I was⌠yeah.â
You almost sent me across the River Styx just now.
I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
âWhy do you keep popping up out of nowhere like that? Youâre going to scare someone to death.â
âBecause your startled face is cute?â
âWow. Thatâs twisted.â
âNo oneâs ever called me good-natured, anyway.â
âThatâs not something to brag about.â
He poked my cheek with his finger, chuckling. Then his gaze shifted toward Pession.
âThat boyâs always with you.â
âThatâs usually the case.â
âHm.â
âWhat?â
Resting his chin on his hand, he smiled playfully.
âHe likes you.â
âI know that much.â
Itâs impossible not to know when he says it every day.
Right now was my break time during trainingâwhen Pession usually brought me water.
âYouâre working hard.â
âYeah. Somehow.â
âHm.â
Why is he looking at me like that?
âYou know, training wonât cure your illness.â
âI know that much.â
âThen why do you work so hard?â
âBecause Pession wants me to?â
The moment I said that without thinking, his smile twisted for the first time.
âAh, I see.â
A chilly wind seemed to brush past.
Why did a shiver just run down my spine?
âYou really like that kid, huh?â
âI donât.â
âReally?â
ââŚ.â
No matter what I said here, it felt like stepping on a landmine, so I kept my mouth shut.
His golden eyes darkened.
âI donât like it.â
âPardon?â
âI said I donât like it.â
The suffocating tension lasted only a momentâthen, as if the oppressive air had never existed, he relaxed and smiled softly.
I honestly couldnât figure him out.
Mehen didnât know how to get rid of a dangerous stalker either.
I hadnât expected much, but seeing the advanced magic tools in this world, Iâd wonderedâjust maybe? But no, that was a waste of hope.
They say humans can adapt to anything, and I guess itâs trueâbecause Iâd already gotten used to this stalkerâs antics.
âSo, why do you keep showing up?â
âBecause itâs fun?â
ââŚ?â
Am I your YouTube channel or something?
âDonât you have work to do?â
âLots.â
âThen is it okay for you to be hanging around here?â
âYeah, itâs fine.â
âWhy?â
âNothing urgent.â
âI see.â
âIâm waiting.â
The boredom in his golden eyes shifted into something more vivid.
âArenât you going to ask what Iâm waiting for?â
âThat would be overstepping my bounds.â
âYouâre really good at staying in your lane, you know that?â
âHeh.â
He smiled like he was enjoying watching me inch closer, but I didnât appreciate the feeling that he was âlettingâ me.
âSo, did you finish digging into me?â
ââŚWhat?â
âYou went all the way to the library. I didnât know you were so curious about me, little lady.â
ââŚ.â
How does he even know that?
I froze, unable to say anything, and he looked positively amused.
âFind out what you wanted?â
ââŚNo.â
At this point, denying it was pointless. I admitted it honestly.
âStill not curious enough to just ask me directly?â
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
Looking up into those dazzling golden eyes, I recognized a very familiar emotion in themâ
Indifference.
âBecause I feel like if I ask, Iâll get tangled up in some unlucky mess and end up quietly âremoved,â gone like morning dew.â
Apparently not the answer he expectedâhe stared wide-eyed, then burst into uncontrollable laughter.
âOh, this is something.â
His golden eyes curved mischievously.
âYouâre adorable, you know that?â
You have a strange idea of whatâs cute.
âAsk me.â
âNo.â
âI wonât âremoveâ you, so ask.â
He looked at me like this was a rare opportunity, too good to pass up. I narrowed my eyes. It still felt like a scamâŚ
âReally? Youâll swear? No harm, no blackmail?â
âYou have no faith in people, huh?â
âI donât have faith in non-humans either.â
Are you even human, by the way?
âWhat are you, really?â
âSecret.â
âThen your name?â
âAlso a secret.â
ââŚAre you kidding me?â
âIf I told you that, I would probably remove you.â
âFine. Secret.â
âYou accept that quickly.â
âI donât like dying for no reason.â
Then⌠what should I ask?
âThat thing in Sharitâwhat was it?â
His golden eyes turned dangerously dark.
âOkay, pass.â
âYou have good instincts, little lady.â
I forced an awkward smile. Was that a compliment or an insult?
âWhat do you want from me?â
âWho knows.â
The sunlight hit his golden eyes, making them glitter coldly.
âThis is the first time Iâve come across something this interesting, so Iâm not sure.â
His pupils narrowed vertically. The air felt like it had me trappedâan unidentifiable pressure slowly closing in.
Heâs going to eat me alive.
Heâs definitely going to eat me.
I shut my eyes tightâ
âDonât be so scared. Iâm not going to eat you⌠yet.â
That means you will eventually, doesnât it?
âI donât like it when youâre scared.â
ââŚ?â
I flinched, and when I opened my eyes, those golden irises were right in front of me, curved in blissful amusement.
âSee you later.â
Just as I was thinking his voice was too sweetâ
âArellin!â
Pessionâs voice rang from a distance, and in an instant, all the pressure vanished.
âAh.â
When I came to my senses, I was alone.
ââŚFeels like I just got possessed by a ghost.â
