Chapter : 16Â
After being officially dubbed the Hook Collector, Mehen gave a brief explanation.
âThatâs how it happened.â
Of course, the childcare squad couldnât accept it.
âWhat do you mean, âthatâs how it happenedâ? You skipped everything important!â
âWe still havenât understood anythingâat all!â
âHow is Lady Arellinâs mother⌠Lady Mehen?â
âHow are you, Mehen, her mom?â
âIs it that? The forbidden lovechild of Mehen and His HighnessâŚ?â
âWasnât that the most ridiculous rumor ever, debunked and discarded?â
âHard to believe bio-magitech has come this farâŚâ
âBut now that I look, doesnât she kind of resemble Mehen?â
âRight? The vibe, the auraâitâs similar.â
Mehen pressed her temples firmly.
âEnough nonsense from everyone.â
Maybe they sensed something from her cold smile, because they all went silent at once.
âThe young lady came looking for her mother.â
âAh!â
Rena gasped as realization struck and she leapt into deduction.
âDonât tell meâyouâre going to stand in for her missing mother?! That way, youâll get into House Halbern and steal their wealthâmmph!â
âDid you forget Iâm managing all that wealth?â
ââŚMy apologies.â
It was all jokes. When else would they get a chance to tease Mehen like this? But now they started to tread carefully.
Mehen swept her cool gaze across them all, then let out a deep sigh.
âLetâs not let this happen again.â
âWeâll correct ourselves.â
âWeâll be more careful.â
âWeâll try harder.â
As their contrition echoed around the room, Yuni suddenly stood up with a stomp.
âBut only Mehen made up with her! Weâre still pushed aside! We want to be close with the young lady too!â
And so the grievance meeting resumed.
âSheâs keeping her distance from us!â
âShe doesnât understand our professionalism!â
âWaaaahâŚâ
What is wrong with these people?
Mehen looked a bit flustered.
Were they always like this?
âWell, thatâs none of my business, so deal with it yourselves. Just donât make trouble for the person youâre supposed to be caring for, understood?â
ââŚâŚâ
Everyone fell solemn.
Then came the familiar flood of tears.
âYouâve already reconciled, havenât you?!â
âThose with everything mock us now!â
âI want to be close to her too!â
âI could be a great mom too!â
âLady Arelliiiinâ!â
The childcare squad was unitedâby jealousy and envy.
As soon as Arellin recovered, Mehenâs first order of business was to reassess her security.
She thoroughly vetted safe locations, and only selected the most trustworthy people. She repeated the safety checks multiple times before finally letting her emotions slip through the cracks.
Was this whole mess entirely her fault?
No.
It was all because of that master of hers who suddenly threw a new burden her way.
So, half out of impulse, she sent a message.
âHis Highness is the worst trash of a father imaginable.â
The reply came surprisingly quickly.
âDo you want to be fired, you littleââ
Apparently, Jaren had kept his word, staking his name and honor. Whether heâd managed to protect his life and dignity, however, was another story.
Seeing such an unusually prompt reply from the Duke of Halbern, Mehen snorted.
âFire me, then. Iâm retiring.â
A letter so out-of-character for Mehenâfull of disloyalty and blatant rudeness.
âYouâre not fired. Repay your disloyalty with your body.â
ââŚHa.â
That was the answer.
âThis manâŚ!â
Northern Frontlines
âWaaaah. Mehenâs so mean.â
Jaren, his face bruised blue and green, pressed a precious boiled egg to his cheek.
This was the mark of mercy left by Duke Halbern himself, after returning from a brutal campaign to retake the southern line.
âWhyâd you even talk back to His Grace?â
âYou really thought you could sass the Dukeâthe man who can take on a thousand monsters by himself?!â
âThis is all your fault, Jaren~â
The knights of the Saren Order, delighted by the rare opportunity, jumped at the chance to mock him.
Jaren protested.
âHey! Itâs not like I wanted to be sassy!â
This was all Mehenâs fault!
âIf it werenât for Mehenâ!â
But the public sentiment favored Mehen.
âYou couldâve just not delivered her message.â
âYou chose to say it yourself.â
âBut I swore on my name and honor!â
The other knights, apparently having pawned off their own honor long ago, clicked their tongues.
âTsk tsk. This is why Muvysk is hopeless.â
âThis is so Muvysk.â
âSo typicalâŚâ
âYou guys are mocking me, arenât you?!â
âOh, howâd you guess?!â
âYouâre supposed to be on my side!â
But the knights came to a sudden realization.
âPoor Mehen.â
âWeâre deployed here suffering on the front linesâŚâ
âBut Mehenâs all alone, struggling back there too.â
âPoor Mehen.â
ââŚ.â
Whose side are you really on?
âBut hey, Jaren.â
âDid it come? That thing?â
The Saren knightsâ eyes sparkled as they circled around Jaren. He sensed danger to his life.
âHand it over if you want to live.â
With a sour face, he passed over a video orbâMehenâs detailed growth documentation of Arellin, delivered for the Dukeâs benefit.
âEeeek! Sheâs so cute!â
âAdorable!â
âLook at those cheeks!â
âSheâs grown so muchâ!â
âI wanna see her with my own eyesâ!â
And so, the Saren Order sustained their emotional well-being on the harsh front lines⌠by obsessively fangirling from afar.
âHmmm~â
Pession happily swung his legs.
The head attendants of the imperial palace sharpened their gazes at the crown princeâs casual demeanorâbut Pession didnât care.
âWhatâs with that smug grin?â
âBeats me.â
Terion brushed off Siluaâs comment.
It was lunchtime. He had no time to waste analyzing his brother.
ââŚ.â
Silua glared at Pession suspiciously.
âWhat is up with him?â
Emperor Edward and Empress Azeni had three children:
First, Crown Prince Pession.
Second, Lady Silua.
Third, Prince Terion.
The siblings got along reasonably well. In fact, better than most. But like all kids their age, they often bickered.
âWant this?â
âMhm.â
Pession handed over a big sausage to Terion. Completely out of character.
Silua intervened.
âGive me one too.â
Normally, heâd yell, âEat your own!â but now?
âSure~ Here you go~!â
Smiling, he handed it over.
ââŚ.â
Silua grew concerned.
ââŚDid he hit his head?â
Maybe he got injured during training?
Pession, unaware of Siluaâs worried glances, just grinned to himself.
âCanât wait for this afternoon!â
The Collection Meeting
Officially: The Crown Princeâs Playmate Gathering.
Today was the day. Griam had long given up trying to match Pessionâs high energy and just accepted it.
Acceptance brings peace.
So today, Pession was the first to arrive! Earlier than everyone else! Unmatched and unprecedented!
âIâm first todâOh! Your Highness?â
âW-Why are you here?!â
âIsnât this early?â
âDid we come late?â
The children were flustered by this unusual situation. Pession greeted them smoothly and explained.
âHey, everyone! I just came early today. Donât worryâtake a seat!â
âPhew! So weâre not late.â
âWhy are you here so early, Your Highness?â
âYeah, is today special?â
âYou seem really happy!â
âDid something good happen?â
As the room filled with noisy chatter, Pession laughed and welcomed everyone.
Each child arrived, froze upon seeing Pession already there, got an explanation, and relaxed.
But then⌠Pessionâs expression clouded a little.
âSurely⌠she wonât miss it again, right?â
No way. She wouldnât. Right?
Still, given past incidents, unease crept up.
âBut Griam said sheâd come today.â
Heâd even been resisting his daily urge to visit her during recovery.
âIf she skips againâŚâ
Then forget the warningsâheâd just visit her every day. He was just about to make that vow whenâ
âWhatâs with him?â
âDoes anyone know?â
âNope.â
As confusion spread across the room, the door opened.
A pale face. Silky platinum hair cascading gently down. Soft rose-gem eyes like cherry blossoms. The sweet scent of honey seemed to follow her.
A lovely little girl stepped in.
âArellin!â
ââŚ?â
Pession leapt up as if heâd been waiting forever. The other kids fell into stunned silence.
In that strange quietâ
âYou came, Arellin!â
Even Arellin was startled.
âWhatâs with him?â
