Chapter 10 What a Pure White Lotus
Xu Ruoxin clenched her back teeth so tightly she looked like she might start steaming with rage.
But she quickly calmed herself, pulling a few tissues to wipe the coffee from her face. Her movements were slow and graceful, every gesture refined.
âNan Xiao, what I said was the truth. You know that yourself.â
âAnd besides, I am not a third party. If you donât believe me, you can go and ask Chengyu yourself whether I count as a mistress.â
With that, Xu Ruoxin cast her a disdainful glance, then picked up her small bag and left elegantly.
Lin Yan glared after her back, spitting out angrily,
âThat womanâbeing a whore is one thing, but trying to act virtuous on top of it? Shameless!â
Nan Xiao pressed her lips tightly together, saying nothing.
Xu Ruoxin telling her to ask Xie Chengyu whether she was a mistressâit showed she had absolute confidence that he would stand by her. Clearly, their relationship was strong.
Suddenly, Nan Xiao clutched her stomach, whispering in discomfort,
âYanyan, I feel a little unwellâŠâ
âWhatâs wrong?â
Startled, Lin Yan quickly grabbed her arm.
Nan Xiao shook her head. Just a moment of nausea had hit her suddenly, but then vanished within seconds. Strange.
She had always had a weak stomach; discomfort was nothing unusual. She brushed it off.
At that moment, Lin Yanâs client returned. After repeatedly confirming that Nan Xiao was alright, she went back to discuss the contract, leaving Nan Xiao to take a cab back to the villa.
As soon as she stepped through the door, her phone buzzed. She picked up.
âHello?â
âNan Xiao.â Xie Chengyuâs voice carried a trace of suppressed anger. âWhat did you say to Ruoxin this afternoon?â
Nan Xiao froze, one hand reaching to take off her shoes.
âNothing much. Why?â
âShe was hospitalized with contractions.â His tone sharpened. âThe baby was almost lost.â
ââŠâŠâ
Nan Xiaoâs hand stilled, her body trembling slightly.
It took her several seconds before she found her voice.
âSheâs at Tianhe Hospital, right? Send me the room number.â
Tianhe was the closest hospital to the café. Xu Ruoxin was likely there, which was why Nan Xiao asked.
Soon she received confirmation from Xie Chengyu. Slipping her shoes back on, she grabbed her keys and left again.
She wanted to say it face-to-face: staying married wasnât her choice, it was Old Master Xieâs demand. She wanted Xu Ruoxin to stop bothering her altogether.
At Tianhe Hospital, Nan Xiao knocked gently on the ward door. A voice called, âCome in.â She pushed it open.
Inside, Xu Ruoxin lay propped on the pillow, while Xie Chengyu sat by her sideâan image of domestic bliss.
Nan Xiaoâs chest ached, as though pierced by needles. Clenching the doorframe, she forced herself forward to the bedside.
âYouâre here.â
Xie Chengyuâs expression was frosty.
Nan Xiao nodded, just as Xu Ruoxin, pale-faced, slightly lifted herself and spoke first:
âMiss Nan, Iâm sorry. I misunderstood you earlier.â
ââŠâŠâ
Nan Xiao frowned.
âWhat do you mean?â
Xu Ruoxin gazed at her apologetically.
âAfter speaking, I thought it through. Old Master Xie must have chosen you for the marriage because he saw your good character. You must be a good personâyou wouldnât cling to Chengyu without letting go.â
âMy contractions have nothing to do with you. The doctor said it was very likely caused by coffee. Iâve already explained everything clearly to Chengyu.â
With that, she lay back again, looking fragile but wearing a blissful expression.
Nan Xiaoâs fingers curled into fists.
It felt like punching cottonâutterly useless.
She stared into Xu Ruoxinâs eyes, those eyes so weak and innocent. What a pure white lotus. But why did she have to act this way?
Very quickly, Nan Xiao understood.
Xu Ruoxin must be afraid she had a recording, so she struck first, twisting the story in her favor.
Nan Xiao was still working out her response when the plainly dressed middle-aged woman on the sofa suddenly stood, speaking with agitation:
âHow could it be the coffee that caused contractions? Youâve been drinking coffee these past days without issue. Why only today? It was clearly because that womanâs friend called you a mistress and splashed hot coffee on you. You were agitatedâthatâs why you had contractions and bledââ
âMom!â
Xu Ruoxin quickly cut her off, shooting Xie Chengyu a glance, her expression turning slightly awkward.
