Chapter 13Â
 Birthday Present
In the novel, Elvin was a refreshing type of guy â blond hair, blue eyes, and when he smiled, you could see his gleaming white teeth. He was a lean, athletic build â the âclean and brightâ kind of handsome.
He did have that âIâm the bestâ noble-supremacy attitude, but since he was a fairly simple-minded person, he often got put in his place by Hero Abel. In that sense, he played more of a clownish, comic-relief role.
The real reason his popularity skyrocketed, though, was because of his dramatic death.
Right before the final battle with the Demon King, he faced off against one of the Four Heavenly Kings â the last of the Demon Kingâs generals. When Abel made a mistake and the party was pushed into a desperate situation, Elvin said, âLeave this to me. You guys go on ahead,â and died in a mutual strike.
Even then, he apparently never grew fond of Abel, who was a commoner. His last words, as he collapsed, were: âThe rest is up to you, Serios.â
Ah, the friendship between men!
How do I even describe it? Just⌠the best.
Fans had always suspected that Elvin might just be a musclehead, and well⌠that theory turned out to be true.
Honestly, what kind of education are they giving in the royal family?
âYou should be more grateful that I came all the way here for you.â
âAnd who was it that barged in without being invited? You even ditched your guards, didnât you?â
My brotherâs sharp words cut in as he subtly pulled me behind his back. Elvin faltered.
Waitâhe ditched his guards?!
Even if the ducal estate is close to the royal palace, how did he make it here in one piece?
Heâs the crown prince, for heavenâs sake! He really needs to act more carefully!
âI brought Ian with me.â
Ian â thatâs the knight commanderâs son and one of the future Demon King subjugation party members. Heâs the same age as Elvin, I think.
As a future close aide candidate, heâs basically Elvinâs babysitterâ er, I mean, attendant.
He was supposed to stop this kind of thing!
When I glanced toward the wall, I saw Ian, his tall eleven-year-old frame shrunk apologetically as he stood there.
He probably didnât even have time to stop Elvin before the prince bolted out.
âEl-sama, would you really be fine if Ian got executed?â
âHuh? What are you talking about?â
I peeked out from behind my brother to look at Elvinâs face â he looked completely lost.
âWell, if you came without any guards, and even got a tiny injury, Ian would be sentenced to death, wouldnât he?â
âThatâs⌠thatâs an exaggerationâŚâ
âRight, Brother?â
Even if he didnât believe me, heâd believe my brother â so I passed the question to him. My brother smiled and patted my head.
Ehehe. I got praised.
âŚWait, thatâs not the point!
âIndeed. If there are no other guards present, the full responsibility would fall on Ian. Even Leticia understands that much, and yet youâŚâ
Oof. That was a little harsh.
But hey â technically, Iâm older than Elvin. Iâm eternally sixteen, after all.
Itâs only thanks to my brother that my odd speech patterns as a five-year-old donât stand out too much.
Apparently, even when he was five, my brother already spoke like a miniature adult.
As expected of him â a true genius, unlike me!
âStill, Leticia is my friend, so of course Iâd come see her.â
âNext time, make sure you send a messenger first â and donât ditch your guards.â
âO-okayâŚâ
After a thorough scolding from my brother, Elvin looked close to tears.
âBrother, can I open my presents now?â
âOf course you can.â
Yay!
Father gave me a greenhouse, and my brother gave me matching bracelets.
Iâd asked for the greenhouse so that, once I eventually found a Golden Lycoris, I could cultivate it myself.
The bracelet had a magic stone just like my brotherâs eye color â apparently, it had a defensive enchantment.
And from ElvinâŚ
He gave me a flower bookmark.
At first, I thought, What a childish present! â but then I remembered that Iâm still a child, after all.
Then I looked closely at the bookmark in my handâ
âand froze in shock.
