Chapter 10 – The Second Calamity

“Hyyaaaah!”

A newborn creature yawned loudly as it emerged from its egg.

It looked just like a beautiful little girl, with dark golden hair, and seemed to be about five years old based on her small, delicate appearance. But on her back were two tiny wings—one pure white, the other pitch black.

A phantom beast.

Unlike monsters, phantom beasts were mysterious beings like spirits, ghosts, angels, or demons. And even among phantom beasts, there were different ranks.

This one is a top-class hybrid—half-angel and half-demon.

From heaven came the noble angels, said to heal the sick with a single breath. From hell came the terrifying demons, who brought chaos just by stepping into the world.

This newborn creature, hatched from the so-called “Egg of Calamity,” carried the blood of both.

Now that it’s hatched, raising it will be the key.

Depending on how it was raised, this creature could become something great—or something terrible.

A hybrid has the potential to become either side. With divine power, it could destroy demon armies… or with hellfire, it could burn the angels themselves.

In the original story, the main character only realized the egg’s true identity too late—and regretted it deeply. Had they raised this creature properly, they wouldn’t have lost so many comrades to the volume 2 final boss.

But if it grows up wrong, it’ll be just as dangerous.

A top-class hybrid going wild could cause a massive disaster. Depending on how strong it became, it could wipe out entire cities.

Still, Kranol had no reason to complain about this.

After all, the little dragon hatchling I have could cause the same destruction if it goes the wrong way.

Kranol frowned to himself.

Now that he thought about it, this really was like handling a bunch of ticking time bombs.

Even if it was to cure his madness, was it really okay to keep such dangerous beings together?

Just then…

“Mister, who are you?”

The little girl yawned and rubbed her eyes, looking up at him curiously.

She spoke fluently—probably due to her angel blood.

“I’m…”

“Give me clothes!”

She suddenly cut him off.

Kranol frowned slightly.

“I’m Kranol Wizard. I hatched you. And don’t interrupt me again.”

“Okay! But I was just born, and I’m naked. I need something really pretty to wear!”

The tiny girl looked up at him, boldly demanding clothes.

Kranol took out a large cloth from his bag—something he had planned to use as a bandage—and tossed it in front of her.

She immediately pouted.

“What is this? This outfit is ugly! I don’t like it at all!”

“Then give it back. I’ll buy you new clothes when we reach the territory.”

“Hmph! Mean human! I don’t want to walk around naked!”

She folded the cloth neatly and wrapped it around herself. Surprisingly, the cute child made even a rough cloth look decent.

“Kryaaaah?”

The little dragon hatchling looked curiously at her.

It sniffed her, both wary and intrigued.

“And who are you?”

“Kryaaaah!”

“What? He says you’re his dad?”

The girl seemed to understand the hatchling.

She flapped her black-and-white wings in frustration.

“Hmph! Do you think I’m dumb? You look nothing alike! There’s no way you’re related!”

“Kryaaaah!”

But the hatchling stubbornly shook its head.

Then the girl turned to Kranol with a serious face.

“Mister, do you have a mate?”

“No.”

“Baby dragon! He says he doesn’t have a mom!”

“Kryaaaah?!”

The baby dragon burst into tears.

Kranol ignored them—he was already thinking about the rewards he’d gained from the dungeon.

Four magic scrolls from the hunters, two 1-star crafting materials, a 2-star magic gauntlet, the Rotten Dragon’s Heart, and now a top-class hybrid beast.

Truly, the best possible rewards he could’ve gotten from the Swirling Burrow Dungeon.

But it wasn’t enough.

To cure his madness, he still had a long way to go.

I have to get stronger before I lose control and kill everyone.

***

Later that afternoon…

Kranol frowned.

An unexpected problem had arisen.

“Eeeeyaaaah!”

“She bit me first!”

While he had gone to gather dry grass for firewood, a fight had broken out.

The baby dragon had a bump on its head, and the girl had a small bite mark on her arm.

Both were angry and whining loudly.

“Kryaah! Kryaaaah!”

“I didn’t do anything wrong! I just said the truth—that you don’t have a mom! Then you got mad at me!”

The baby dragon clung to Kranol’s leg, sniffling. The girl kept chattering, insisting she was innocent.

Kranol felt a headache coming on just listening to them.

They’ve barely known each other—how are they fighting already?

It felt like raising two chaotic daughters.

He wasn’t used to this, having been single in his past life.

So, in his usual way, he dealt with it bluntly.

“Stop fighting. Unless you want to drive me insane.”

“Hmph! So what if you go crazy? What could you even do?”

“I’d probably explode you alive.”

“Liar!”

“Hmm.”

Kranol pulled something from his pocket—a handkerchief stained with dried reddish-brown.

The girl’s face froze.

“W-What is that?”

“A handkerchief with human blood. Had to clean up after I blew up three evil people.”

“……What?”

“I don’t care if you two are friends. Just don’t fight.”

The girl looked unsure if he was joking or serious.

Then she suddenly looked down, mumbling.

“If I don’t fight with the baby dragon…”

“Didn’t hear you.”

“If I don’t fight!”

She looked up at Kranol with sad eyes.

“Can I be loved by people?”

“…What do you mean?”

The little girl puffed out her cheeks.

“I know what I am! Everyone called me the Egg of Calamity! They all wanted to destroy me before I was even born. Even monsters tried to kill me while I was still in the egg. I bet it’s because they hated me!”

“But if I’m loved by a lot of people, that won’t happen, right?”

Did she remember being in the egg?

Unlike the dragon, this child was born with high intelligence.

But smart kids often feel sadness sooner, too.

“…I’ve never been loved before. So, how can I be loved? Do you know how, Mister?”

Kranol fell silent for a moment, deep in thought.

Then Kranol replied in a low voice.
“I don’t know either. I’m in the same boat as you.”
“Hmph. You’re just as pitiful as I am,” the girl huffed.

She stepped closer and looked up at him seriously.
“Well, I’ll try to listen to you. You’re weird, but I don’t think you’re a bad person. You were the one who brought me into this world… even if I don’t really like you. And you did give me my first set of clothes.”

Kranol just watched her quietly. Then, he reached out and gently patted her head.
She flinched at first but didn’t push him away. It seemed unfamiliar to her, but not unpleasant.

“Your name is now Odong. Because your baby fat is all soft and round.”
“You’re a stupid human!”

The girl shouted, flapping her wings, and zipped off like a rocket.
Kranol frowned.
What did I say wrong?

Then she called out, “Baby dragon! I’m sorry! I don’t have a mom either. Let’s be friends now!”
“Kryaaaang!”

Just like that, the two made up and started playing happily again, as if they hadn’t fought at all.

Kranol let out a sigh.
Now I’ve got two troublesome brats to deal with.

***

Four days had passed since the new little “calamity” joined him.

The baby dragon kept whining while sitting on Kranol’s shoulder.
“Kyraaang. Krryaaaa…”
“What is it saying?” Kranol asked.

The girl translated,
“He says you need to find him a mom. Quickly.”
“Tell him to stop saying nonsense.”
“Krryaaaa?!”

Women were the last thing on his mind.
He had constant headaches, and if his madness acted up, he might end up killing people.
His survival came first—romantic relationships were out of the question.

But the girl kept staring at him.
“What are you looking at?”
“Can I keep calling you ‘mister’? I didn’t notice at first because you always look so gloomy, but the more I look… you seem more like an older brother!”
“Call me whatever you want.”
“Okay, mister!”

Kranol didn’t mind being called that.
His current body was 22 years old, but before being reincarnated, he had been in his thirties.

So the three of them continued walking, making their way toward the territory of Birshi.

But then—what he feared happened.

“We’re out of food.”
“Kryaaaang!”
“I’m hungry, mister!”

Both the baby dragon and the girl looked like they were about to cry.
Despite being small, their appetites were massive.
So even the extra food Kranol had packed was now completely gone.

“Just hang in there. We’ll reach Birshi by tomorrow afternoon.”
“Kryaaaang!”
“But that means we have to skip three meals!”

The two complained, but there was nothing Kranol could do.
To save energy, he went to sleep early that day.

But just as he was dozing off, he realized something was wrong.

Where did those two go?

The baby dragon and the girl were nowhere to be found.

But he didn’t have to search long.
Soon, the two came back—covered in dirt and leaves.

“Kryaaaang!”
“Hee! Look, mister! We caught this! But how do we cook it?”

They were dragging in a dead boar—bigger than either of them.

Kranol was speechless.
He was about to scold them for wandering off but stopped.
They must have been really hungry.

“Bring it here. I’ll cook it.”

Thanks to his many experiences, Kranol was skilled at cooking outdoors.
He cleaned the boar, drained the blood, and started grilling it over a fire.

That night, they had a feast of roasted boar meat.

Kranol put the sizzling meat on sticks and handed them out.
“Kryaaaang!”
“Mister, you’re amazing at cooking! It’s so juicy!”

Kranol watched the two kids happily gobbling down meat with ash on their faces.
For some reason, he felt glad to have them by his side.

After all, they’re my free ride to success.

Kranol took a bite himself.
The meat was juicy and nicely chewy.

Yep.
Nothing beats auto-hunting.

He was already looking forward to tomorrow—
when he would finally start making full use of these little “calamities” for profit.
