Chapter 10 â The Second Calamity
“Hyyaaaah!”
A newborn creature yawned loudly as it emerged from its egg.
It looked just like a beautiful little girl, with dark golden hair, and seemed to be about five years old based on her small, delicate appearance. But on her back were two tiny wingsâone pure white, the other pitch black.
A phantom beast.
Unlike monsters, phantom beasts were mysterious beings like spirits, ghosts, angels, or demons. And even among phantom beasts, there were different ranks.
This one is a top-class hybridâhalf-angel and half-demon.
From heaven came the noble angels, said to heal the sick with a single breath. From hell came the terrifying demons, who brought chaos just by stepping into the world.
This newborn creature, hatched from the so-called “Egg of Calamity,” carried the blood of both.
Now that itâs hatched, raising it will be the key.
Depending on how it was raised, this creature could become something greatâor something terrible.
A hybrid has the potential to become either side. With divine power, it could destroy demon armies⌠or with hellfire, it could burn the angels themselves.
In the original story, the main character only realized the eggâs true identity too lateâand regretted it deeply. Had they raised this creature properly, they wouldnât have lost so many comrades to the volume 2 final boss.
But if it grows up wrong, itâll be just as dangerous.
A top-class hybrid going wild could cause a massive disaster. Depending on how strong it became, it could wipe out entire cities.
Still, Kranol had no reason to complain about this.
After all, the little dragon hatchling I have could cause the same destruction if it goes the wrong way.
Kranol frowned to himself.
Now that he thought about it, this really was like handling a bunch of ticking time bombs.
Even if it was to cure his madness, was it really okay to keep such dangerous beings together?
Just thenâŚ
âMister, who are you?â
The little girl yawned and rubbed her eyes, looking up at him curiously.
She spoke fluentlyâprobably due to her angel blood.
âIâmâŚâ
âGive me clothes!â
She suddenly cut him off.
Kranol frowned slightly.
âIâm Kranol Wizard. I hatched you. And donât interrupt me again.â
âOkay! But I was just born, and Iâm naked. I need something really pretty to wear!â
The tiny girl looked up at him, boldly demanding clothes.
Kranol took out a large cloth from his bagâsomething he had planned to use as a bandageâand tossed it in front of her.
She immediately pouted.
âWhat is this? This outfit is ugly! I donât like it at all!â
âThen give it back. Iâll buy you new clothes when we reach the territory.â
âHmph! Mean human! I donât want to walk around naked!â
She folded the cloth neatly and wrapped it around herself. Surprisingly, the cute child made even a rough cloth look decent.
âKryaaaah?â
The little dragon hatchling looked curiously at her.
It sniffed her, both wary and intrigued.
âAnd who are you?â
âKryaaaah!â
âWhat? He says youâre his dad?â
The girl seemed to understand the hatchling.
She flapped her black-and-white wings in frustration.
âHmph! Do you think Iâm dumb? You look nothing alike! Thereâs no way youâre related!â
âKryaaaah!â
But the hatchling stubbornly shook its head.
Then the girl turned to Kranol with a serious face.
âMister, do you have a mate?â
âNo.â
âBaby dragon! He says he doesnât have a mom!â
âKryaaaah?!â
The baby dragon burst into tears.
Kranol ignored themâhe was already thinking about the rewards heâd gained from the dungeon.
Four magic scrolls from the hunters, two 1-star crafting materials, a 2-star magic gauntlet, the Rotten Dragonâs Heart, and now a top-class hybrid beast.
Truly, the best possible rewards he couldâve gotten from the Swirling Burrow Dungeon.
But it wasnât enough.
To cure his madness, he still had a long way to go.
I have to get stronger before I lose control and kill everyone.
***
Later that afternoonâŚ
Kranol frowned.
An unexpected problem had arisen.
âEeeeyaaaah!â
âShe bit me first!â
While he had gone to gather dry grass for firewood, a fight had broken out.
The baby dragon had a bump on its head, and the girl had a small bite mark on her arm.
Both were angry and whining loudly.
âKryaah! Kryaaaah!â
âI didnât do anything wrong! I just said the truthâthat you donât have a mom! Then you got mad at me!â
The baby dragon clung to Kranolâs leg, sniffling. The girl kept chattering, insisting she was innocent.
Kranol felt a headache coming on just listening to them.
Theyâve barely known each otherâhow are they fighting already?
It felt like raising two chaotic daughters.
He wasnât used to this, having been single in his past life.
So, in his usual way, he dealt with it bluntly.
âStop fighting. Unless you want to drive me insane.â
âHmph! So what if you go crazy? What could you even do?â
âIâd probably explode you alive.â
âLiar!â
âHmm.â
Kranol pulled something from his pocketâa handkerchief stained with dried reddish-brown.
The girlâs face froze.
âW-What is that?â
âA handkerchief with human blood. Had to clean up after I blew up three evil people.â
ââŚâŚWhat?â
âI donât care if you two are friends. Just donât fight.â
The girl looked unsure if he was joking or serious.
Then she suddenly looked down, mumbling.
âIf I donât fight with the baby dragonâŚâ
âDidnât hear you.â
âIf I donât fight!â
She looked up at Kranol with sad eyes.
âCan I be loved by people?â
ââŚWhat do you mean?â
The little girl puffed out her cheeks.
âI know what I am! Everyone called me the Egg of Calamity! They all wanted to destroy me before I was even born. Even monsters tried to kill me while I was still in the egg. I bet itâs because they hated me!â
âBut if Iâm loved by a lot of people, that wonât happen, right?â
Did she remember being in the egg?
Unlike the dragon, this child was born with high intelligence.
But smart kids often feel sadness sooner, too.
ââŚIâve never been loved before. So, how can I be loved? Do you know how, Mister?â
Kranol fell silent for a moment, deep in thought.
Then Kranol replied in a low voice.
“I donât know either. Iâm in the same boat as you.â
“Hmph. Youâre just as pitiful as I am,â the girl huffed.
She stepped closer and looked up at him seriously.
“Well, Iâll try to listen to you. Youâre weird, but I donât think youâre a bad person. You were the one who brought me into this world⌠even if I donât really like you. And you did give me my first set of clothes.â
Kranol just watched her quietly. Then, he reached out and gently patted her head.
She flinched at first but didnât push him away. It seemed unfamiliar to her, but not unpleasant.
âYour name is now Odong. Because your baby fat is all soft and round.â
“You’re a stupid human!â
The girl shouted, flapping her wings, and zipped off like a rocket.
Kranol frowned.
What did I say wrong?
Then she called out, âBaby dragon! Iâm sorry! I donât have a mom either. Letâs be friends now!â
“Kryaaaang!”
Just like that, the two made up and started playing happily again, as if they hadnât fought at all.
Kranol let out a sigh.
Now Iâve got two troublesome brats to deal with.
***
Four days had passed since the new little âcalamityâ joined him.
The baby dragon kept whining while sitting on Kranolâs shoulder.
âKyraaang. KrryaaaaâŚâ
“What is it saying?â Kranol asked.
The girl translated,
“He says you need to find him a mom. Quickly.â
“Tell him to stop saying nonsense.â
“Krryaaaa?!”
Women were the last thing on his mind.
He had constant headaches, and if his madness acted up, he might end up killing people.
His survival came firstâromantic relationships were out of the question.
But the girl kept staring at him.
“What are you looking at?â
“Can I keep calling you âmisterâ? I didnât notice at first because you always look so gloomy, but the more I look⌠you seem more like an older brother!â
“Call me whatever you want.â
“Okay, mister!â
Kranol didnât mind being called that.
His current body was 22 years old, but before being reincarnated, he had been in his thirties.
So the three of them continued walking, making their way toward the territory of Birshi.
But thenâwhat he feared happened.
âWeâre out of food.â
“Kryaaaang!”
“I’m hungry, mister!â
Both the baby dragon and the girl looked like they were about to cry.
Despite being small, their appetites were massive.
So even the extra food Kranol had packed was now completely gone.
âJust hang in there. Weâll reach Birshi by tomorrow afternoon.â
“Kryaaaang!”
“But that means we have to skip three meals!â
The two complained, but there was nothing Kranol could do.
To save energy, he went to sleep early that day.
But just as he was dozing off, he realized something was wrong.
Where did those two go?
The baby dragon and the girl were nowhere to be found.
But he didnât have to search long.
Soon, the two came backâcovered in dirt and leaves.
âKryaaaang!â
“Hee! Look, mister! We caught this! But how do we cook it?â
They were dragging in a dead boarâbigger than either of them.
Kranol was speechless.
He was about to scold them for wandering off but stopped.
They must have been really hungry.
âBring it here. Iâll cook it.â
Thanks to his many experiences, Kranol was skilled at cooking outdoors.
He cleaned the boar, drained the blood, and started grilling it over a fire.
That night, they had a feast of roasted boar meat.
Kranol put the sizzling meat on sticks and handed them out.
“Kryaaaang!”
“Mister, youâre amazing at cooking! Itâs so juicy!â
Kranol watched the two kids happily gobbling down meat with ash on their faces.
For some reason, he felt glad to have them by his side.
After all, theyâre my free ride to success.
Kranol took a bite himself.
The meat was juicy and nicely chewy.
Yep.
Nothing beats auto-hunting.
He was already looking forward to tomorrowâ
when he would finally start making full use of these little âcalamitiesâ for profit.
