Prologue
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t afraid.
How could she not be terrified after being dragged away by men in black masks?
Even if dragged away by a tiger, as long as one keeps their wits… Vivian gently bit her lower lip, pulling herself together.
However, the moment the sound of a door opening echoed along with the heavy footsteps of several people, that resolution crumbled in vain.
Still blindfolded, Vivian looked around anxiously. It was an involuntary reflex born of extreme terror.
“Why is she blindfolded?”
Startled by the angry voice, Vivian shrank back completely.
“If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t move.”
Along with a harsh voice that sounded almost metallic, something cold pressed firmly against her temple.
A knife. It was definitely a knife.
Following the man’s warning, Vivian stopped struggling and squeezed her eyes tightly shut.
Am I going to die like this?
After falling into a strange world and struggling through a life of hardship… dying so pointlessly and fleetingly…
“Tsk, pathetic. Did you bring the right person?”
Snip. The sound of cloth being sliced rang out, and the blindfold fell away. A bandit-like man with a long scar on his cheek looked Vivian up and down before speaking.
“She doesn’t look like nanny material for the young master to me, either… Should we just dispose of her?”
Nanny? Vivian quickly looked around. Though dark, the place was grandly decorated like a movie set.
If she could get a job in a place like this… Vivian’s eyes sparkled as she raised her voice.
“A nanny! I can do a great job!”
A heavy silence fell over the room. Just as she began to feel that something had gone wrong, the boss let out a sigh and asked a question.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty…”
…or somewhere around there, probably. Vivian trailed off, her voice lacking confidence.
“Your name?”
“I’m Vivian.”
“A commoner. Have you ever raised a child?”
Vivian bit her lower lip, lost in thought.
This place was similar to the romance fantasy novel world she used to enjoy reading. In noble families, parents were nobles too, but unfortunately, the ‘Vivian’ she had transmigrated into was merely someone doing odd jobs at an inn. On top of that, let alone raising children, she was an orphan who had never even been married.
The bandit-like guy standing beside her nudged her arm with a thump, urging her to answer. Startled by this, a lie blurted out of her in the heat of the moment.
“O-Of course.”
Ah, whatever.
She had taken care of twin nephews before, so just one kid… She figured it would work out somehow.
“You mean you’re married, too?”
“Pardon? Yes.”
Wait, he asked if she had raised a child… why was he asking about marriage?
During the suffocating silence that followed, Vivian nervously stared at the man shrouded in darkness.
“Count, even if the young master is seven years old… a nanny is essential.”
It felt as though she were hearing heavenly bells. Vivian cast a gaze of boundless gratitude toward the man standing beside the boss.
A black figure moved in the darkness, and the boss’s voice sounded once more.
“In that case… put her to work starting tomorrow. If she turns out to be completely unfit… dispose of her.”
“Yes, sir.”
She survived. Even though the condition of being ‘disposed of’ was attached… for now, she had secured a job and extended her lifespan.
Even up until this moment, she had no idea. The fact that she had just been hired as a nanny in the house of the novel’s mastermind…
