Episode 5
âYou didnât do anything wrong. I know youâve been hurt too.â
Sophia kissed her husbandâs head to comfort him. Jake wrapped his arms around her without saying a word.
Sophia closed her eyes and prayedâplease let this sibling relationship get better. After a little while, they awkwardly let go of the hug. Jake helped Sophia sit back down, then rang the bell to call the servants.
After ordering a refill, he suddenly remembered something.
âBy the way⌠I got a message â the Lorvant house said they want to visit tomorrow.â
âThe Lorvant house?â Sophia blinked.
Jake shook his head. âProbably the aide. Surely the Duke himself wouldnât come.â
Sophiaâs eyes widened. Cullen Lorvant was the Empireâs top catch, but he was famous for avoiding any unnecessary appearances. Why would he show up in Burndale with no ties?
Jake worried inwardly. Did the Duke somehow end up holding our bonds? If it was money-related, maybe they could get a little extension.
He forced a smile at his wife while feeling anxious.
At the Lorvant estate â the aideâs office.
Harry sat there grinning like an idiot over the transfer-draft heâd worked on all night. He wasnât flattering himself â it was a perfect draft.
âNo changes needed.â
Of course, a lawyer should review, but he was confident it would pass. He hummed while tidying up the papers when the door suddenly flew openâno knock.
âGood heavensâ! OhâLady Dvenzel?â Harry jumped up. Standing in his doorway was none other than Lady Alisa Dvenzel.
âHarry, how are you?â she chimed, wearing a frilly bonnet and a poufy dress with shiny blonde hair and sea-blue eyes that made the dark mahogany office feel like the debutante hall. Harry felt like he should be fanning her and chanting her name.
âErâwhat brings you here so suddenly?â Harry cleared his head and glanced out the window. The Duke should be returning from the palace around now. Goodâhopefully we wonât run into him.
Cullen didnât like dealing with Alisaâs tantrums, so of course heâd sent a gemstone to calm thingsâlet that buy him some peace.
Alisa plopped into a chair, fussed her skirt, and scowled.
âI came to see how our marriage plans are going.â
âWhat? Marriage plans? Since when did I promise marriage to you?â Harry spluttered. Alisa looked almost insulted.
âTo marry some commoner like you? Are you crazy? Of course I mean me and Cullen!â
âOh â thank you,â Harry breathed, relieved. Alisaâs expression immediately turned fierce, but Harry kept his calm and asked casually:
âBy the way, did you get the Dukeâs gift? He put a lot of thought into it.â
âThatâs what Iâm here about. Who just sends jewelry without a note or apology?â
âAh.â Harry suddenly understood â and was a bit surprised. You expect basic manners from him? Alisa seemed more considerate than heâd thought.
As Harry fretted about how to soothe her, the office door slammed open again. Both of them turned and saw Louise, Cullenâs sister.
âLouise?â Alisa brightened at the sight; Harry, however, went pale. He scanned Louiseâs face quickly. She still looks pale⌠if the Duke finds out sheâs here, heâll explode.
Louise cocked her hip and called out like a street punk. âHey, come out.â
Alisa blinked, offended. âMe? Are you talking to me?â
âWould I call out to anyone whoâs actually working? Think before you speak.â Louiseâs tone was brash; Alisa bristled.
Louise looked embarrassed, scratched her head, and then softened.
âAnyway, your brother isnât here. Donât bother busy peopleâhave tea with me.â
Alisa thawed and stood up with a little scoff. âYouâve got no friends besides me, do you?â She grabbed Louiseâs hand suddenly, and Louise flinched.
âWhy?â Louise asked. She then noticed the papers on Harryâs desk: transfer due to marriage? Her eyes narrowed.
Alisa nudged her shoulder. âWhat are you doing? Come on, tea time?â
âRight. Letâs go.â Louise waved and left. Harry bowed politely after her.
They sat under a garden tent where the servants had set up tea. Alisa took a sip of hot chocolate and teased Louise: âYou should help me out.â
âHelp how?â Louise shoved the snacks away, glowering.
âHelp me with my marriage to Cullen,â Alisa said like it was obvious.
âOh.â Louiseâs face crumpled. She slammed her plate downâclatter! The head maid silently gasped at the cost of the china.
âWhy, if I become your sister-in-law, youâll like it!â Alisa gushed.
âYeah, right,â Louise snapped.
âIâll treat you well! Iâll marry you off to someone noble and brilliant. I promise!â Alisa babbled.
âWho asked for that?â Louise retorted, fuming.
âLook at her. A womanâs happiness is like thatââ Alisa kept going until she realized sheâd said something foolish. She clamped her hand over her mouth.
âOh, sorry.â
Louise glared at her teacup but then calmed down and said quietly, âItâs okay. Itâs not completely wrong.â
âWhat do you mean?â Alisa blinked.
âWell, the Duchess is alive.â
âBut sheâs not in her right mind,â Louise replied. âSo yes, Iâm unrefined.â
âGosh, must you say it like that?â Alisa felt guilty and suddenly threw herself at Louise in a hug. âI was wrong, okay?â
Louise, squashed into the hug, mumbled and then went quiet. Her cheeks flushed red.
âHappy now?â Alisa beamed.
âI wasnât even mad in the first place,â Louise said flatly.
âWhat? But you looked so mad!â Alisa laughed, releasing her.
Louise watched Alisa smile brightly and then muttered, âDoes Cullen⌠really like you that much?â
Alisa clapped. âYes! He likes me. And our families are closeâperfect match.â
âWhy would you like that stuck-up guy?â Louiseâs voice had an edge.
Alisa blinked, confused. âStuck-up? Heâs been so kind to me.â
Louiseâs expression changed. The guards and servants around them stiffened.
âCullenâs kind to you? The man who ran away and doesnât even want to see you?â she snapped.
âOh come nowâthatâs not because he hates me. Heâs just shy. Nobody actually hates me.â Alisa smiled confidently.
Louise was dumbfounded. With Alisaâs bold, frank nature, she actually seemed serious.
âYou really have it easy in life, donât you?â Louise said, leaning back.
Alisa nodded smugly. âYep.â
Louise rolled her eyes, then laughed despite herself. Alisa chattered on, and Louise listened, oddly entertained.
Tension at the Burndale house.
EveryoneâCount Jake, Countess Sophia, and the servantsâwere dressed up and lined up in the main hall, nerves high. At last, the guests theyâd been waiting for arrived.
