Chapter 2
The Elf Who Came to Another World
I was sitting in my living room, talking with her.
âSo, I get it nowâyouâre one of those foreigners who came to Japan because you admire it, right?â
Foreigners fascinated by JapanâŠ
Iâd seen them on TV beforeâpeople who come here because of anime or manga.
That must be the case here too.
âWait a moment⊠I donât quite understand what youâre saying.â
âOh, donât be shy. You even went as far as putting on those ears⊠pretty realistic, huh?â
I reached out and tugged lightly at her ear.
âOw!â
Huh? That felt real.
âWaitâyou mean⊠these are actually real ears? Like, youâre a real elf?â
She glared at me, tears forming in her eyes.
âDo people in this world touch othersâ ears without permission? And donât even apologize afterward?â
âS-sorry!â
What the hell?
Could she actually be a real elf?
I thought it was just a joke.
âUmâŠâ
An awkward silence filled the room for a moment.
âMy name is Chamomile LumfĂ©. As you can see, Iâm of the elf race.â
âIâm Hiroya Matsunaga⊠just a regular high school student.â
âHigh⊠school student?â
âYeah. Itâs a place where we study.â
âA school⊠ah, like a magic academy?â
Well, not quite, but she seemed satisfied with that answer.
âIt seems Iâve ended up in another world,â she said calmly. âIâll be in your care for a while.â
âWhaaat? How did you come to that conclusion?â
âYouâre the one who brought me here, arenât you? Since I canât return anyway, I might as well stay here. I can use magic, so Iâll be quite useful.â
What a shameless elf.
âI only helped you because you were in trouble. My parents wouldâve done the sameâthey were kind people.â
ââŠI see. So your parents areâŠâ
âTheyâre gone. Anyway, do whatever you want. You can stay here if you likeâassuming youâre fine being attacked by a random guy.â
âYou think you could attack me? Iâd turn you into a toad with magic before you laid a finger on me.â
At some point, a staff appeared in her right hand.
Waitâwhere did that come from?
âI can use storage magic,â she said. âThe potions I had with me are stored there too. No problem at all.â
Since there was no point arguing, I showed her to the room that used to be my momâs.
One more mouth to feed wouldnât make much difference anyway.
âI havenât cleaned it up, so⊠feel free to use it however you want.â
Well, I could probably have her work part-time later.
Sheâd have to learn how things work in Japan first, though.
That night, curiosity got the better of me.
When I reached for her doorknobâzap!
Something invisible repelled my hand.
Looked like she had set up a magical barrier.
Not that I actually planned to go in or anything.
When school starts again, Chamomile will have to stay home alone.
I should probably teach her some basic common sense about this world before then.
Ding-dong!
What now, this early in the morning?
I mustâve fallen asleep in the living room last night after getting home from my trip.
Did I forget something important
Too tired to even make it to my own bed, apparently.
I sighed and went to the front door.
When I opened it, a short-haired girl stood there.
âOh, itâs you, Amika.â
ââOh, itâs youâ? Really? Iâve been messaging you since yesterday on LINE and you didnât reply! I was worried something happened.â
I glanced at the table. My phone was still sitting there, notifications unread.
âI thought maybe we could have dinner together,â she continued. âYou mustâve been tired after going to Tokyo.â
AmikaâNakajima Amikaâwas my childhood friend who lived next door.
Her family often worried about me after my parents passed away.
I guess last night was no different.
âIâm fine now. Really. Tell your parents Iâm managing on my own.â
She gave me a somewhat complicated look.
âOkay⊠but donât push yourself, alright? If anything happens, call me.â
âThanks for worrying about me.â
Amika turned and went back to her house.
Do I still look that unreliable to her?
Itâs already been three years.
She doesnât have to fuss over me anymore.
