Chapter 30
Time seemed to stop.
Natalie and Edward were frozen in place â and as for the lion, it paid them no mind at all, merrily pressing its soft paw pads against Edwardâs face, going ânya, nya.â
It seemed to be enjoying itself quite a bit.
â…Heh, haha.â
âLâLord EdwardâŚ?â
Natalie hadnât expected that â that the lion would actually touch Edwardâs face with its paw.
The sweet, delicate atmosphere from earlier was gone, replaced by the sound of Edwardâs laughter. When Natalie glanced at him, she saw that the lionâs latest target was still Edward himself.
âPhew⌠Lord Lion, youâre a bit too energetic, arenât you?â
âAhâŚâ
âHmm? Whatâs the matter?â
Edward picked up the lion sitting on Natalieâs lap and brought it toward himself, gently stroking its fur.
His expression was calm and refreshed â or rather, that was exactly the problem.
âUm⌠your face, it has⌠Lord Lionâs paw prints on itâŚâ
âHuh? …Ha, you little rascalâŚâ
Apparently, the lion had pressed hard enough to leave faint paw-shaped marks on Edwardâs cheeks.
But instead of getting annoyed, Edward only chuckled.
âHow about this â I look like a man blessed with Lord Lionâs luck, donât you think?â
âHehe, thatâs certainly a rare blessing.â
âRight? Seems like Iâm lucky today.â
His cheerful attitude made Natalie smile without realizing it. After giving the lion one last affectionate pat, Edward released it and stood up.
ââŚWell then, it seems your father is getting restless to leave.â
âEh?â
Edwardâs gaze drifted toward a nearby window that led to another room. From that direction came the familiar voice â
âNataaalieee, where did you go? Nataaalie!â
âForgive me for keeping you so late.â
âNâno, not at all!â
âBut Iâm really glad we could talk today.â
âHehe, the pleasure was all mine.â
The awkward tension between them had softened â Edward seemed back to his usual self. He turned toward her again.
âAllow me to escort you back to where your father is waiting.â
âAh, thank you very much.â
âNot at all⌠and alsoââ
Edwardâs gaze shifted past Natalieâs shoulder.
From behind her came a small, hesitant voice.
âBrotherâŚâ
It was the Third Prince, fidgeting nervously as he stepped out.
âHehe, Iâm not angry. You were just worried about me, werenât you?â
â…Yeah. Brother, are you feeling better now?â
âOf course. Perfectly fine, thanks to you.â
Edward ruffled his younger brotherâs hair, then offered his hand to Natalie.
âWell then, shall we? May I have your hand?â
âYes, please.â
âAh â and one more thing.â
Just as Natalie was about to place her hand in his, Edward leaned closer, mischief sparkling in his eyes, and whispered near her ear:
âI like you. Iâll be asking for your answer next time â so think about it, alright?â
â…!â
âBrother?â
âCome on, letâs go.â
With a sharp snap of his fingers, the scenery around them began to warp again â something sheâd experienced several times before.
But this time, Natalie was far more aware of the warmth of his hand and the burning heat on her face than the distortion of the world around her.
âââ
âNâNatalieeee! Are you alright? Youâre not hurt anywhere, are you!?â
Her father was waiting in the grand entrance hall, illuminated by glittering chandeliers.
The moment he saw Natalie arriving with Edward, he rushed over with surprising speed and pulled her into a tight embrace â firmly separating her from Edward as if to make a point.
âHahaha⌠I told you not to worry so much, didnât I?â
âHehe, how heartwarming,â Natalie said with a smile.
The King and Queen watched the scene with indulgent, gentle expressions.
Natalie wasnât sure what had been said while she was away, but given that her fatherâs usual antics were being tolerated, they must have shared a pleasant conversation.
At least, she hoped those gazes werenât disapproving.
âFather, Iâm fineâŚâ
âUuuh, to think youâd be apart from me for so long â my poor heart canât take it!â
âFâFather, youâre exaggeratingâŚâ
Natalie tried to appear composed before the King and Queen, as if to say: Heâs not always like this, reallyâŚ
âMy lady,â the King asked, âdid you enjoy your time in the castle town with Edward today?â
âYes! Very much so.â
âOh? Thatâs good to hear.â
He seemed pleased with her answer, nodding in satisfaction. âItâs already night, so I thought to invite you to stay the night⌠but your father refused quite firmly, hah.â
âSâso thatâs what happenedâŚâ
âYes. I see now that Lord Pettigrew is quite an honest man. Though⌠there may be more to him than meets the eye.â
âIâis that soâŚ?â
The Kingâs tone was oddly hesitant, but before Natalie could ask, her father quickly interjected, âWe should hurry home before your mother worries!â
âOh my, youâre right!â
âSee? Now then, Your Majesty, Your Highnesses â thank you for your gracious hospitality.â
Her father bowed politely, and the royal family graciously saw them off â perhaps a bit too warmly, but Natalie chose not to dwell on that.
With a graceful curtsy, she turned to leave.
âTake care on your way.â
âSee you soon, Natalie.â
âBye-bye, Sister Natalie!â
âAh, yâyesâŚâ
She thought she saw her fatherâs ears twitch slightly at the Third Princeâs words, but they managed to make a smooth exit and boarded the Pettigrew family carriage together.
Once Natalie was out of sightâ
âHeh⌠That family is quite interesting,â the King mused. âThey value their daughter more than wealth or prestige. Edward, you must tread carefully.â
âOf course, Father.â
â…Hmm. Very well, then.â
It wasnât the King speaking as a ruler now â but a private conversation between father and son, with meanings hidden beneath the surface.
âââ
At about the same time as when the ball had ended, Natalie rode home with her father.
Along the way, he talked nonstop:
âThat King is scheming, I tell you!â
âThat prince wasnât getting too close, was he?â
âI told them just how adorable my Natalie is!â
Almost every topic was about her.
Yet, since the royal family had treated her father kindly despite his⌠bluntness, she couldnât help but thinkâ
(Maybe the royal family isnât as cold as I thoughtâŚ?)
It was a small misunderstanding, caused by her fatherâs eccentric ways.
Still, chatting like that made the journey home seem short, and soon the familiar view of their mansion came into sight.
âââ
âMy dear! Natalie! Welcome home!â
âWelcome back, my lady!â
Her mother and the servants had stayed up late to greet them.
Though only a day had passed, it somehow felt like sheâd been gone forever.
After saying, âIâm home,â Natalie returned to her own room.
âââ
â…The Duke hasnât woken up yet, has he?â
âNo, my lady.â
âI seeâŚâ
As she asked Mina that question, sheâd already expected the answer â yet it still made her heart sink.
âI think⌠Iâll check on him one last time before bed.â
âIn that case, Iâll escort you.â
âPlease do.â
Having seen him so often suffering in his sleep, Natalie wanted to make sure he was resting peacefully tonight.
With that thought, she followed Mina to the room where Julius lay asleep.
He was as before â eyes closed, brows furrowed.
Was he in pain? Did he have a fever? She quietly leaned closer to check.
â…NaâŚtalieâŚâ
âEh?â
She thought she heard her own name.
Leaning in to confirm, she realized he was indeed murmuring it â âNatalie,â again and again, in a faint, hoarse voice.
âWhatâs wrong? Are you in pain?â
Thinking he might be calling for help, she moved closer still, straining to hear his words clearlyâ
â…LiâŚam⌠oâŚkaâŚâ
â…LiamâŚ?â
Natalie froze.
She knew that name all too well.
It was a name she had never spoken aloud in this world â the name of the child she had given birth to.
The instant she recognized it, her entire body began to tremble, her voice lost.
She couldnât catch the rest of his words â but it didnât matter.
Why⌠is he saying the name of the son I bore
Eyes wide in disbelief, she looked at Juliusâs faceâ
And there, at last, the eyelids she had longed to see open⌠slowly lifted.
His hazy gaze met hers â clearly, unmistakably.
