Chapter 37
(1Â /2 )
This was the fourth day since Su Lianyi left Su Family Village.
Early in the morning, Da Hu stood in the courtyard, staring straight at the gate. The doors were tightly shut. In another hour, it would mark three full days and nights. From then on, he and Su Lianyi would stand as enemies. If they met again, he would have to strike her down without mercy.
This was the first time he had ever come into contact with a woman, lived together with one. He had long grown used to someone preparing a hearty breakfast in the morning, bringing food and water to the fields at noon, and quietly accompanying him to count the stars at night.
He had long grown used to repeatedly changing his impression of someone, being amazed time and again, being shocked again and again by her whimsical ideas. Yet he had never thought that such companionship would end in deception and betrayal.
How he wished it was all a misunderstandingâthat when he opened the courtyard gate, Su Lianyi would be standing outside, sayingâI’m back.
As if possessed, Da Hu really walked over and opened the gate. Naturally, there was nothing outside.
Da Hu froze for a moment and realized how childish he had been. What had he just been doing? Clearly, he had been deceiving himself. It seemed that in this lifetime, he would never become friends with Su Lianyi. They could only be enemiesâjust like when they first met!
The sound of a donkey cart approached from afar. It turned out to be the donkey cart from the Su Family Winery. Old Ma Tou was driving it toward them, and it stopped in front of Lianyiâs house.
Da Hu glanced at it and couldnât help but sneer mockingly. âYou donât need to come anymore. Su Lianyi has left. Sheâll never come back.â
Old Ma Tou was stunned. âDa Hu, what are you talking about?â He found it strange that Da Hu was acting so oddly today.
Da Huâs muscles were taut all over. He hated this feeling of being betrayed. He wanted to find her immediately and kill herânot only her, but her entire Su family! That whole family of roguesâhe had endured them long enough! If not for the mission⌠if not for the mission!
Old Ma Tou looked at Da Hu, who had lowered his head, completely baffled. The donkey seemed to sense the killing intent radiating from him. It grew restless, tossing its head and pawing at the ground with its front hooves.
In the end, Da Hu let out a long sigh. âSu Lianyi left. Sheâs not coming back.â If he did that, how would he be any different from those rogues?
It had only been three days. Why was he already convinced that Su Lianyi would never return? Even he didnât know the reason. There was just a strong feeling in his heartâSu Lianyi was gone.
Seeing the usually taciturn Da Hu acting so abnormally, Old Ma Tou couldnât understand it at all. âDa Hu, whatâs wrong with you today? Feeling unwell? Go see a doctor later. But first, help Lianyi downâsheâs in the cart.â
Da Hu froze. Su Lianyi was in the cart?
âI went to the county town last night to deliver wine. The wheel broke, so I had no choice but to stop for the night and find a craftsman to fix it. Early this morning I hurried back. When I reached the official road, I saw Lianyi walking alone. I quickly let her get on the cart. The child mustâve been exhaustedâshe fell fast asleep as soon as she got on and hasnât woken up since.â As Old Ma Tou spoke, he stepped aside, revealing the narrow carriage.
Da Hu lookedâand sure enough, inside the carriage, hugging a bundle and sleeping soundly, was none other than Su Lianyi.
No one knew where she had gone. Her shoes and pant legs were covered in mud. Su Lianyi usually slept lightly and woke early every day to clean the house and cook. But today, even after he and Old Ma Tou had been talking for so long, she still hadnât woken up. It was clear she was utterly exhausted.
âWhat are you standing there for? Hurry and carry your wife inside,â Old Ma Tou huffed, lowering his voice as he called out to Da Hu.
Da Hu stiffened all over, feeling heat rise to the tips of his ears. He⌠had never touched a woman before.
âYouâre a grown young man and you wonât carry her? You expect this old geezer to do it? Not to mention whether itâs proper or not, just look at Lianyiâthis lump isnât something this scrawny old man can lift.â Old Ma Tou added.
Su Lianyi was very tall. If placed in modern times, she would be at least 1.75 meters tall. In this ancient era, she stood out like a crane among women. Combined with her full figure, she certainly wasnât someone just anyone could lift.
Da Huâs face turned red. After hesitating for a moment, he finally bent down and gently wrapped an arm around Lianyiâs waist, lifting her up.
Da Hu was surprised. She was not nearly as heavy as she looked. Though she wasnât as slender and light as ordinary women, she wasnât heavy either. When had she become this thin?
