Chapter 14
I was relieved to know that living here was possible, but Labelâs question made me embarrassed, and my face felt hot.
âAh⌠yesâŚâ
Ravenâs gaze shifted to Baron. Immediately, Baron crossed his arms and frowned.
âDonât worry about useless things. Just answer whatâs necessary,â he said.
I was startled and tried to stop Baron.
âEeek, Baron! You canât say that!â
But Baron didnât care.
âSo, is it better to leave this house? Or not?â
Raven answered right away.
âSometimes, notifications come laterâlike orders to vacate or pay taxes. If that happens, you deal with it then. Pay the taxes and stay, or move somewhere else. If thereâs a demolition order, youâll have to leave unless you buy the usage rights.â
I sighed and covered my burning face with my hands.
âAh, thank you for letting me know.â
âYouâre welcome. Do you have any other questions?â
âThatâs enough. And⌠Iâm sorry. I donât know how to apologize for my siblingâs rudeness.â
âItâs fine. I only see her as brave, so donât worry.â
Raven smiled warmly, waved slightly, and returned to his place. He really seemed unfazed.
I reached my own conclusion.
âHe must be naturally kind and humble. Plus, heâs handsome and rich, so life must be easy for him. No wonder a good, wealthy man comes here to relax. Ah⌠now I see, heâs a great man.â
ââŚHuh?â
Baronâs eyes rolled.
âWhat, great? That man?â
I felt lighter at Baronâs comment.
âOf course. If a man like him isnât great, who is? Heâs a real man among men.â
I patted Baronâs head and smiled.
âIâm glad we met such a good neighbor. Letâs grow up to be successful like him too, Baron.â
For some reason, Baronâs cheeks puffed up, but it didnât seem important, so I ignored it.
âAlright, now I have to work on the garden. You rest, Baron.â
I led Baron inside the house.
Rolling up my sleeves, I put on gloves, hung a towel around my neck, and took a wooden stick to mark the gardenâs boundaries.
âThis should be enough, right?â
About 20 meters by 20 meters. A bit big for one person, but enough for us to eat and even sell some produce.
âI need to work hard, just in case we want to buy the usage rights later.â
It would be terrible to get a demolition order right when the crops are ready.
I put sticks at each corner to mark the boundaries and began turning the soil with a hoe I had bought. Soon, I hit a large stone that needed both hands to lift.
Looks like this land has a lot of stones.
âAh, thatâs why this land hasnât been used.â
It seemed like a long job ahead, but there was no choice. I placed the stone along the boundary and planned to build a small wall to keep animals out.
For thirty minutes, I worked the soil, removed stones, and dug again. Sweat dripped constantly, and my arms and back ached.
âUghâŚâ
Stretching my back, I rubbed my sore arms.
I remembered the tractors from my previous life. The neighbor, Mr. Kim, used to plow our field with his tractor for a small fee.
Then I heard Baronâs voice from behind.
âWhen are you coming in?â
âHuh?â
âYouâve been outside for a long time.â
I looked at the garden. I had barely finished a small section.
âI have to plow all of it.â
Baron frowned at the size of the garden.
âAll of this⌠alone?â
âYes. It needs to be this big for us to eat and sell.â
âBut we earn with clam digging.â
âThatâs true, but we canât survive on seafood alone. And clam digging depends on the tide and weather. We canât just play at the wrong times.â
I wiped my sweat and smiled.
âWe need to earn enough to feed Baron properly, raise him well, and send him to the academy.â
Baronâs small smile lifted unexpectedly.
âI donât need to go to the academy. I already know a lot.â
I picked up the hoe again.
âYouâre young. You need to learn more. Thereâs no end to learning.â
Thwack!
I struck the ground with the hoe.
âOuch, another big stone.â
I dug around and rolled it aside.
âPhew⌠good.â
Just as I wiped my sweat, Baron suddenly touched the hoe in my hands.
âLet me try,â he said.
âHuh?â
âIâm stronger than you. Step aside.â
I handed the hoe to him and stepped back.
Baron raised the hoe and struck the ground.
âBaron, stop!â
I quickly intervened, seeing him struggle with a tool taller than him.
âWhy? Iâm stronger than you.â
âYes, butââ
I took the hoe back. Baron was stronger, but it hurt to see him swing it.
âI said before, kids shouldnât do this. Go inside and rest.â
âI can do it.â
âListen to me.â
Baron pouted but obeyed.
âThen⌠donât overdo it.â
âOkay. Iâll just do a little.â
After more work, the sun began to set. The tide was still coming in, so we could have dinner and go clam digging.
Dinner and clam digging with Search were fine, but by the time we returned, I felt exhausted.
The real problem was the next day.
My whole body ached, especially my arms.
I remembered waking up as Hailey, my body almost on the verge of collapse.
âI didnât expect the muscle pain to be this badâŚ!â
Even though I felt a bit stronger now, plowing the garden was too much.
âAre you okay, sis?â
Baron touched my forehead as I groaned.
âNo fever.â
âItâs nothing serious. My arms are sore from plowing yesterday.â
âReally?â
âYes, Baron. But first, breakfast.â
I forced myself up.
âHuh? Youâre hurting, but youâre making breakfast?â
âOf course. You need to eat well to grow well.â
I cooked soup and warmed the bread, while Baron followed anxiously. I couldnât let my little Baron eat cold bread or go hungry.
I spread strawberry jam on the bread and set it on the table, then lay back in bed.
âEat quickly. Sorry, Iâll sleep a little longer.â
I closed my eyes, leaving Baron staring blankly. Just a little more rest, then back to work.

Later, a dream begins:
My heart raced. The air smelled of smoke and herbs, thick and hot, making it hard to breathe.
âPrincess! Open your eyes! Youâll die if you donât!â
Startled, I opened my eyes. The luxurious room was on fire, and I crouched in fear.
Instinctively, I looked for an escape. There must be a secret passageâŚ!
âHurry! This way!â
A woman in a knightâs uniform pushed a burning cabinet aside with her bare hands, seemingly unhurt. A passage appeared behind it. I dragged my trembling legs toward it.
A mirror on the wall caught my eye.
A girl with platinum hair, blue eyes, and a pretty dress, looking like a mid-teen, smiled.
Following her into the dark passage, I heard shouting from afar:
âEveryone evacuate!â
âThe king and queen?â
âTheyâre dead! We only canât find the princess!â
âThen find her!â
âWe canât! The place is collapsing. Get out!â
âAhhh!â
