~Chapter 26~
I might not look like it, but Iâm actually shy and awkward with strangersâmore than people think.
So this situation? It was a nightmare.
And what were these people even crying about?
Why were they embarrassed?
Just as I tilted my head in confusionâtrying to figure it outâsomeone suddenly said:
âDuke Hessen was too much! Even if you donât like your fiancĂŠe, you should at least care about someoneâs life! Donât you agree?â
Ah. Donât tell me theyâre talking about that incident at the lakeâŚ
It was the worst situation.
It made it look like my fiancĂŠ saved the woman he loved instead of me. Like I was some tragic heroine!
Even though I wasnât actually sad about it, everything started to go black in front of my eyes.
Is that really how people saw me?
Maybe Allen was rightâI should have marched over and thrown the breakup letter in Ricardoâs face.
Of course, these relatives didnât come because they cared about me.
They werenât here out of concern.
Proof?
My great-aunt Elizabeth dabbed at fake tears with her handkerchief.
âThe whole Empire is gossiping. I never thought a lady of House Roygin would be called the âhated fiancĂŠeâ in my lifetime.â
Youâve only seen me three times in your life, and now you act like weâre close?
Still, I had a more important question.
âWhy are you here?â
Weâre not even close.
Elizabeth gave a sweet smile.
âWell, Cedric is inheriting the title. I had to be here for that, donât you think?â
We never even sent her an invitation.
âArenât you happy to see us?â
Bailey looked at me with watery eyes.
Ugh. As annoying as they were, I couldnât exactly kick them out.
Just then, someone else arrivedâit was Grandfather.
He mustâve heard the news from the butler.
His eyes met Elizabethâs and briefly wavered, but they quickly turned sharp and cold.
I had never thought of my grandfather as scary before, butâŚ
âHeâs terrifying right now!â
While I stayed frozen, Bailey casually ran up to Grandfather.
âHave you been well?â
She clung to his arm like it was nothing, smiling sweetly.
âŚUgh, I kind of envied her personality.
I wished I could act cute like that with Grandfather tooâbut that just wasnât who I was.
Even now, I am being way more expressive than I used to be.
Honestly, if I ever acted like Bailey, Grandfather might be so shocked heâd fall over.
Grandfather didnât respond right away.
Then, finally, with his eyes closed, he said:
âPrepare a room.â
As soon as he finished speaking, Elizabeth grabbed Baileyâs hand and led her away.
Bailey just waved at us like nothing had happened.
âSee you tomorrow!â
Once the chaos was over, I let out a breath and looked at Grandfather.
He was still standing there, deep in thoughtâlike he didnât even realize I was watching him.
***
Later that dayâ
âBrother, do you have a minute?â
I stopped Cedric just as he was about to go out.
He nodded slightly.
 âLetâs talk on the way.â
I followed him and brought up the topic.
âI heard youâre going to Dremokan Forest after the coronation.â
ââŚDid I tell you that?â
âNope. I eavesdropped on you and Grandfather.â
Cedric gave a short, baffled laugh at my comment.
He was planning to visit Dremokan Forest with the priests, probably to talk about the forestâs historyâor to warn people not to get involved in any heretical beliefs about the forest heaven.
âI want to go too,â I said.
âWhy?â
I calmly explained the reason I had prepared in advance.
âIâve been thinking⌠Maybe Grandfatherâs illness is somehow connected to that forest.â
I expected him to brush it off or scold me.
 But Cedric actually listened.
âIf we study the Divine Era, we might find something. After all, magicââ
âThereâs no way.â
Cedric suddenly cut me off.
âBailey, if anything goes wrong, people could accuse you of treason.â
Maybe I shouldâve just said I wanted to tag along out of curiosity.
Or maybe I should tell him about Peril, the Tower Master?
⌠No. If anyone found out I spoke about Peril waking up, I might not survive long enough to regret it. That man doesnât forgive easily.
Thinking about it gave me chills.
So I smiled and shrugged.
âCome on, I cause trouble sometimes, sureâbut not that much. I promise Iâll just stay by your side and take a peek at the World Tree. Thatâs it.â
Cedric let out a deep sigh.
ââŚFine. Itâs not like youâd listen if I said no.â
âHaha, when have I ever not listened to you?â
As soon as I said it, Cedric shot me a look that basically said: âSeriously?â
âŚOkay, never mind.
I just smiled awkwardly.
 Then he changed the subject.
âDid the Duke reply yet?â
âHmm, no.â
Cedric seemed a little annoyed.
Worried about his blood pressure, I answered cheerfully.
âHeâll reply soon, probably.â
âHow long are you going to let him waste your time?â
âWell⌠he wanted the breakup too, right? So itâll come any dayââ
CRASH!
We suddenly heard something break in the hallway.
âAh!â
It was Baileyâmy cousinâwith her eyes wide as saucers.
âYou okay?â
I rushed to her and checked for injuries. Cedric followed and lightly scolded her.
âYou couldâve had a maid do that.â
I was about to call for the doctor when something caught my eyeâ
Inside her coat pocket, I caught a glimpse of a shiny, expensive-looking accessory. It disappeared quickly, butâŚ
âŚWasnât that my necklace?
âIâm fine, sister!â Bailey said brightly, as if nothing had happened.
Now that I think about it, the last time she visited, a few items from the house had gone missing, too.
âYouâre busy, brother. You should get going.â
Cedric glanced once at the broken porcelain doll on the floor, then nodded.
âHave a maid clean it up. Itâs dangerous.â
âI was about to move it!â Bailey said cheerfully.
âI was going to ask Grandfather if I could have it as a gift!â
Sure, whatever.
There were so many decorations in the mansionâhe probably wouldnât even notice.
But what about the necklace? Was she planning to ask for that too?
As I stood there wondering, Bailey suddenly asked with sparkling eyes,
âBy the way, sister⌠are you really breaking off the engagement?â
So she knew.
I nodded. It wasnât a secret I planned to keep forever.
Her face lit up instantly.
âŚWhy are you so happy?
Something about her expression irritated me, and I snapped before I could stop myself.
âBailey, maybe try controlling your facial expressions better.â
âOops, sorry! But sister, donât worry! These days, breakups arenât a big deal. Everyone goes through them!â
Her smile was warm, like she was genuinely comforting me.
But this was Bailey. She had a talent for irritating people just by talking.
So I waited to hear the rest of it.
âSoâwhoâs the girl the Duke fell for? I mean, he left someone as beautiful as you! That mustâve been some woman!â
She sounded way too excited talking about Idette, so I guess sheâs not into Ricardo.
That means sheâs just here to mess with me.
âCould you help clean the hallway?â
âYes, Miss!â
Still, I didnât get it.
Surely she didnât come all the way here just to annoy me, right?
While I was deep in thought, Bailey kept chatting.
âThis time, sister, you should find someone who really likes you. I bet the Duke suffered a lot tooâbeing forced into an engagement with someone he didnât even love.â
She even shuddered dramatically, like it was a tragedy.
âOh, but donât just marry anyone either! You canât live without a man, so I really worry about you.â
I turned to look at her, wondering if Iâd heard wrong.
But noâshe was still smiling that same innocent, bright smile.
No, why do these FLâs keep wondering if theyâre hearing things when someone is being blatantly rude to them? Just shut them up or confront them? Like the girl is casually insulting you and youâre just standing there watching her, I would be demanding my necklace back in front of the brotherđš
Hopefully she confronts her next chap instead of letting it go đŽâđ¨
erm can we get rid of her already?
Why was the FL called “Bailey” when she and Cedric were talking about her going to the forest and he initially refused?
I wish she would just confront the people talking trash about her instead of gaslighting herself into believing she misheard them
Come on B donât let her walk over you
