~Chapter 10~
Bang!
The window shook loudly.
Like something had hit it.
A maid, who was secretly wiping her tears by the window, jumped in surprise.
āW-What was that?ā
She turned her head.
A stupid bird had crashed into the window, fell down, then flew back and started pecking at it.
As if it wanted attention.
āWait⦠isnāt that a carrier pigeon?ā
Carrier pigeons werenāt supposed to come here.
They were trained to go to the west tower only.
But this one had no message tied to its leg.
āIs it just dumb?ā
The maid tried to scare it away.
But the pigeon didnāt move.
It scratched the glass, made annoying noises, and kept hitting the window with its wings.
āYou crazy birdā¦!ā
āWhat is all this noise?ā
At that momentā
A weak coughing voice was heard.
It wasĀ Sabina, the lady of the Valentine castle.
āI-Iām sorry!ā
āItās fine. What about the bird?ā
Her voice was weak, like she might stop breathing at any moment.
Through the curtain, her thin body could be seen.
Her fingers looked like dry branches.
āTh-the bird is acting strangelyā¦ā
Even Sabina smiled a little at that strange report.
āI want to see this brave bird. Help me up.ā
āNo! The doctor said you must rest!ā
āWhen people die, they rest forever.ā
āPlease donāt say thatā¦ā
The maid almost cried but held it in.
āYou donāt have much time leftā¦ā Sabina knew it herself.
She had already accepted her death.
The maid helped her sit near the window.
Butā
The bird was gone.
The maid thought angrily:
āIāll cook that pigeon if I catch it.ā
Thenā
Sabina touched the window and asked softly,
āā¦Is this⦠cherry blossom?ā
On the window were fresh cherry blossoms.
āThatās impossible⦠they already fellā¦ā
The maid looked outsideā
And froze.
The huge cherry trees were in full bloom again, moving in the wind.
An impossible sight.
A miracle.
* * *
Lloyd went to the place where he first met Aria.
Several jaguars followed behind him.
āFind her.ā
They growled in response.
Thenā
Something fell on his head.
A flower petal.
āā¦What is this?ā
He looked up.
Flower petals were falling like rain.
Only the cherry trees were blooming among the dead forest.
āDid Kalin do this?ā
No.
The castleās mage wouldnāt do something this gentle.
āThen⦠someone else.ā
Lloyd remembered a small girl.
Standing with a lace umbrella.
Surrounded by flowers.
āā¦Annoying.ā
He looked at the tree and lightly tapped his sword.
Thenā
A jaguar returned.
It was holding something.
A small, old bag.
āā¦Her bag.ā
Ariaās bag.
She had held it tightly earlier.
āLetās see what sheās hiding.ā
Poison? Weapons?
He opened it.
Insideā
Cards, ink, and a broken pen.
āSo she writes to communicate.ā
āFoolish.ā
Keeping written records is dangerous.
He should burn them.
Stillā
He started reading.
[The flowers are pretty.]
Random.
[I like seeing flowers.]
So she likes flowers.
[Give me cocoa with melon taste.]
ā¦Melon?
Next cardā
[White, floating, soft.]
āā¦Marshmallow.ā
[Itās delicious, melon.]
She liked it.
Even if she misunderstood it.
Thenā
The cards changed.
Old. Worn.
[My name is not idiot.]
[Iām sorry.]
[Itās all my fault.]
[Please donāt hit me.]
[Iāll try to speak.]
[Sorry for being useless.]
The cards were worn out.
Used many times.
Ink was smudged with tears.
Thenā
The last card.
[Please love me.]
ā¦
Lloyd froze.
At that momentā
A jaguar nudged him and pointed toward the palace.
Aria was there.
He stayed silent.
His eyes briefly moved to the broken penā
Then away.
* * *
Aria drifted in and out of consciousness.
She heard voices.
Felt hands.
Was it real?
Or a dream?
Voices echoedā
āSing for me.ā
āThatās all? Are you joking?ā
āI spent everything to meet you.ā
āStop pretending to be sick and sing!ā
āIf you donāt want to die, sing now!ā
Aria slowly opened her eyes.
āAh! Miss, youāre awake!ā
She blinked.
Dana was on her left.
Betty on her right.
They looked worried.
Dana gently moved her hair.
āIām so glad youāre safe.ā
āThis is⦠the Grand Dukeās castleā¦ā
Aria realized.
āThey took care of me?ā
When she was sickā
Someone stayed beside her.
Wiped her body.
Took care of her.
āYou donāt have to suffer alone anymore.ā
It felt strange.
Her eyes felt hot.
Like she might cry.
Dana patted her head again.
This timeā
Aria didnāt resist.
It was too warm.
Too gentle.
āDonāt be sick.ā
āGet better soon.ā
It felt like she was melting.
Her body.
Her heart.
Everything.
Dana smiled softly.
āHow can you be this cuteā¦ā
Then suddenly stopped.
āOh! Youāre sickāI shouldnāt overdo it.ā
āIāll bring you soup.ā
She fed Aria warm soup.
Aria quietly ate.
Then suddenlyā
She remembered.
Her bag.
She grabbed Danaās hand and wrote:
[What about the Grand Duchess?]
āSheās safe. She passed the critical moment.ā
āā¦Good.ā
Aria relaxed.
āAlso⦠the young master came earlier.ā
Lloyd?
Aria lifted her head quickly.
Her bunny ears moved too.
Dana laughed.
āAnd he brought this.ā
Her bag.
āWhen did I drop itā¦?ā
Insideā
A pen.
But not her old one.
A luxurious fountain pen.
āā¦?ā
Gold tip.
Decorated with diamonds.
Made by a famous craftsman.
Extremely valuable.
Aria looked at Dana.
āShe probably found it in the office.ā
āI seeā¦ā
So for Valentineā
Even something like this is just āpicked up.ā
Aria searched the bag again.
Then found a note.
[When you recover, get lost.]
ā¦
āSo⦠a goodbye gift?ā
Aria asked Dana:
[Does Lloyd hate me?]
He did try to kill her earlier.
She touched the bandage on her neck.
She planned to stay quietlyā
Butā
She couldnāt get killed or kicked out.
Dana replied carefully,
āI canāt judge his feelingsā¦ā
Then addedā
āBut he ordered that you should be allowed to try every kind of dessert.ā
Dana looked slightly troubled.
āThat shouldnāt even be possibleā¦ā
