Chapter 35 â The End of the Birthday
âSo then, Laura wanted to pick out the newest magic wand toy, but I stopped her!â
âWhat? Daisy, youâre such a dummy! Itâs still better than that silly princess hat!â
âHeheheâŚâ
I smiled awkwardly as I watched the two girls chatting excitedly.
They had introduced themselves as Laura and Daisy, both noble girls around my age.
After dessert, we were sitting together under the gazebo, eating cake and talking.
âThe truth is, those magic wands that are popular right now are all⌠um, what was it again?â
âOh, I know what you mean, but I forgot too!â
The two girls frowned, trying to remember the word. I hesitantly offered,
ââŚA marketing trick?â
Laura and Daisy turned to me at once.
âWow, thatâs it! Marketing!â
âRight! My dad said they just carve wood to trick kids into buying them! Itâs a scam!â
âWhoa, reallyâŚâ I smiled again, awkwardly.
âDidnât Daisy say she was seven?â I thought.
What a shame. She was already learning about the dark side of the toy market instead of enjoying her childhood.
Then Laura puffed up her cheeks.
âNo wonder! I bought all the colors, but none of them had any real magic!â
âWhat? You actually believed that? Hahaha!â
Daisy laughed so hard she nearly fell over, and Lauraâs eyebrows shot up sharply.
âHey. If you keep teasing me, Iâll tell your mom.â
âGo ahead~!â Daisy stuck her tongue out and pulled down one eyelid.
Laura jumped up from her seat.
âWait, are they actually fighting?!â
Panicking, I looked between them and quickly tried to stop it.
âD-Daisy! Lady Laura! Please donâtââ
âCatch me if you can!!!â
âUgh! You run so slow anyway!â
Daisy darted behind me, using me as a shield, and Laura came chasing right after her, skirts flaring as she yelled.
âHey! Donât hide behind the birthday girl, thatâs cheating!â
âMy dad says life is a battlefield, you princessy fool!â
And just like that, a full-blown chase began around the gazebo.
I turned desperately toward Arwin and Crown Prince Tian, who were watching from a distance.
They both tried not to laughâsnickering behind their handsâbut whenever their eyes met, they immediately went cold again.
âAhaha! Look at Laura! What kind of countâs daughter runs like that?!â
âOh yeah?! You ogre dung pile!!â
âŚOgre dung pile.
I blinked, speechless.
And thenâ
âDaisy! Stop right there!â
âLaura!! How dare you run around like that!â
Two elegant noblewomen rushed over from the direction of the Empress Dowager and Sharon Abnerâs table.
My eyes widened.
âSo theyâre their mothers.â
âDidnât I tell you not to run! What kind of behavior is this in public!â
âDaisy, this is the second time today youâve fought with Lauraâin front of the Empress Dowager no less!â
Both women were former attendants of the Empress Dowager.
âLaura, what did I tell you before we came here, hmm?â Lady Rieri scolded, arms crossed.
Daisy wasnât safe eitherâher mother, Lady Harper, was even scarier.
âI told you not to misbehave! What did I say before we left home!â
âOw! Ow, Mom, that hurts!â
Lady Harperâs voice boomed as she gave her daughterâs backside a few sharp swats.
âDoes it hurt? Good! My head hurts, Daisy!â
I watched her pinch the bridge of her nose and sighed softly.
When Lady Harper noticed me, she hurried over.
âLady Annelia! Iâm so sorryâdid we frighten you? My daughter can be such a handfulâŚâ
âOh dear, look at that! Thereâs dust on your dress!â Lady Rieri rushed over too, gently brushing my sleeve.
âI-itâs okay! Riaâs fine!â I stammered.
But Lady Rieri didnât step back until my dress looked spotless again.
Daisy and Laura slowly came forward, still glaring at each other and pouting.
âBoth of youâfix your faces,â Lady Harper said coldly.
The two girls instantly looked away from each other.
Watching them, I couldnât help but smile faintly.
It reminded me of days long agoâ
âTeacher! Ria hit me!â
âMika started it first!â
âYou two again?! Go sit in the corner and think about what you did!â
The scoldings at the orphanage had sounded just like this.
âLady Ria is only five years old, yet sheâs so well-behaved,â Lady Rieri said, sighing dramatically.
âIâm so sorry this happened right near the end of your party.â
I looked up. The sky was already turning deep blue with evening.
Some guests had already begun leaving.
Lady Harper smiled kindly.
âQuite a few guests said their goodbyes earlyâthey saw how busy you were playing and didnât want to interrupt. They just thanked the Duke before heading home.â
âAh, I see!â
Both women smiled warmly at me, clearly finding me adorable.
Then they turned to their daughters.
âLaura, Daisy. Go on, say goodbye properly. We were about to leave anyway.â
The girlsâ faces fell instantly.
âBut we didnât even play properly yetâŚâ
âYeah! Lady Annelia hasnât even seen the princess hat I gave her! She promised to show me later!â
âYou two!â Lady Harperâs forehead twitched dangerously.
Quickly, I ran up to the girls before their mothers could start yelling again.
âLady Laura! Lady Daisy! I had so much fun today!â
They blinked at me in surprise.
I took each of their hands and shook them firmly.
âNext time, if you invite me, Iâll come play againâwith the Dukeâs permission! Iâll bring the princess hat and the seashell necklace you gave me!â
Their faces lit up instantly.
Daisy turned to her mother eagerly.
âMom! Can I invite her? Please?â
Lady Harper sighed but smiled at me kindly.
âOf course, Lady Annelia. The Harper family would be delighted to have you visit. Thank you for inviting us today.â
âAnd the Rieri family as well,â Lady Rieri added. âIf you come, Iâll make plenty of sweets for you, alright?â
I hesitated, then bowed deeply.
âNo, thank you! Riaâs the one whoâs gratefulâfor coming to my fifth birthday!â
The two womenâs faces melted with affection.
âOh my goodness, how precious.â
âNow I understand why the Empress Dowager dotes on her so much.â
Laughing softly, they each took their daughterâs hand and left.
I watched them go for a long moment, then looked up.
The sky was painted a soft orange, with fluffy clouds drifting by.
I remembered what Miel had told me a few days agoâ
âThis really is your birthday, you know!â
âWhen they found you at the orphanage, there was a note wrapped in your blanketâwith your name and your birthday on it!â
A strange feeling welled up inside me.
âSo today really is my birthday.â
Iâd worn a pretty dress, eaten all sorts of delicious food, and now I was watching a sunset this beautiful.
In my previous life, everyone had called my birthday cursed.
They blamed me for celebrating the âwrongâ childâs birthdayâthe orphan instead of the real noble heir, Lady Hyana.
But nowâŚ
I lowered my gaze and saw the colorful balloons still scattered all over the garden.
âTheyâre so pretty.â
Even after looking at them a hundred times today, they were still just as beautiful.
âRia?â
I turned. Arwin and Crown Prince Tian were standing nearby, calling my name.
I blinked up at them.
Honestly, this birthday party hadnât been bad at all.
It had been loud and tiringâbut meeting girls like Daisy and Laura made it worth it.
âThey even gave me presents,â I thought, smiling softly.
I still hadnât opened any of them.
ââŚHmm,â I murmured, thinking about the pile of gifts waiting in my room.
âI want to open them. The presents.â
Tian and Arwin glanced at each other.
I could feel even the servants cleaning up the lawn sneaking glances at me.
Feeling suddenly shy, I started walking a little faster toward the house.
