Chapter 34 â Chains in the Shadows
Tianâs eyes narrowed sharply.
âI donât remember asking you, Baron.â
âWell, since Your Highness is the Crown Prince, it seemed polite to introduce myself directly.â
Arwin smiled brightly.
Crackleâ
It felt like sparks were flying between the two boys.
I just stood there, completely bewildered, watching them face off.
James Darwin had already run away long ago, but the other noble children still lingered nearby, watching us curiously as if something exciting were about to happen.
âAnd how exactly are you and Annelia so close?â Tian crossed his arms, clearly trying to imitate an adultâs authoritative pose.
âSheâs only been living at the Abner estate for whatâthree months?â
ââŠâ
âThree months seems a bit short to be that close, donât you think?â
Arwinâs usual gentle smile didnât waver.
âOh, I think three months is more than enough. As you may know, the only children at the Abner estate are Ria and me.â
ââŠâ
âSo we eat together, take walks together, study together. Sometimes I even sing her lullabies before bedâso now we canât live without each other.â
I frowned, staring up at Arwin.
âHey! Thatâs only because you begged to sing me lullabies!â
Arwin only smiled again, while Tianâs jaw dropped.
âWait⊠what?â he asked flatly. âYou really eat breakfast and go on walks together every day?â
I squirmed, unsure what to say.
âUmâŠâ
Arwin jumped in smoothly.
âAlmost every day, isnât that right, Ria? Tell the truth.â
I hesitated, then nodded reluctantly.
âI guess so.â
âAnd you read books together and play with toys too, right?â
âWell, yeah⊠but thatâs only because there arenât any other kids around.â
That was my excuse.
I didnât want anyone thinking I was just some quiet little researcher hiding in the lab all day.
âAnd didnât you once say Iâm your favorite person in the entire mansion?â
My eyes widened.
âWhaâ?! That was because I lost at rock-paper-scissors!â
Arwinâs smile widened slightly.
âEven so, you said it yourself.â
I let out a groan and nodded again.
ââŠFine. I did say it.â
I couldnât exactly deny itâit was technically true.
Then Tian scoffed.
âWhatâs the point if you had to force her to say it? And really, the best you got was âfavorite in the mansionâ? Thatâs it?â
Arwinâs smile stiffened slightly, but Tian grinned like heâd just scored a victory.
âWell, Iâve been hugged by Annelia before.â
The air froze.
Everyone nearbyâincluding the noble children watching from afarâstared at us with wide eyes.
âRia, what is he talking about?â Arwin asked quietly.
He was still smiling, but his eyes were sharp.
Tianâs lips curled smugly.
âYou didnât hear me? She hugged me. The very first day we met.â
I blinked, stunned.
âMe? Whenâ?â
Tian took a step closer and lifted his chin proudly, glancing at Arwin like a challenger in a duel.
âShe held my hand too. And wiped my face with her own handkerchief.â
The memory hit meâour first meeting.
That day, Tian had been trembling after being hit by his servant, Jacques. I had stepped in to stop it.
And afterward, to calm him downâŠ
âI also remember her fixing my hair,â Tian went on. âAnd calling me a âsuper strong kid.ââ
My jaw dropped.
âWe held hands for a long time, tooâan hour, maybe more. Oh, and she whispered to me. She was so worried about me.â
When I turned my head, Arwin was smiling tightly, his fists clenched at his sides.
Tian looked right at him and delivered the final blow.
âOf course, unlike you, I didnât force her. She did it all on her own.â
ââŠâ
âSo maybe Iâm not her favorite in the mansion,â Tian added smugly, âbut in the Empireâno, the whole continentâI definitely am.â
âHahaha!â
He laughed triumphantly, like a hero whoâd just slain a dragon.
I sighed deeply.
âDealing with kids this age is seriously exhaustingâŠâ

Meanwhileâ
At the very top of the old Abner watchtower, a man in a black cloak stood silently beneath the fading sunset.
âThe securityâs lighter than expected,â he murmured.
âOnly the guards the Empress Dowager brought with her are alert.â
His cold voice echoed softly under the towerâs shadow as he spoke into a communication crystal.
âBut thereâs an unexpected bonus.â
[Bonus?] came a distorted voice from the other end.
A gust of wind swept through, fluttering the manâs cloak.
For a moment, a strange sigil tattooed on his wrist flashed beneath the fabric.
âWendel Lucian isnât here.â
The words were sharp, heavy with meaning.
Wendel LucianâHouse Abnerâs strongest sword and Sharonâs most trusted knight.
The one who never left her side.
But tonight, he wasnât here.
A thin, cruel smile spread across the manâs lips.
âA rare opportunity. No need to change the plan. This might go even smoother than we expected.â
[So, midnight?]
He nodded slowly.
âYes. Midnight.â
Under the shadow of the tower, his eyes gleamed faintly.
âIâll report once the job is done. Weâll clean up everythingâincluding the bodies.â
Those wicked eyes didnât waver.
They were locked precisely on their targetâ
a little girl laughing in the garden, surrounded by her friends.
Annelia.
***
At the same time, far from the mansionâ
âWaaah! Itâs the nice mister from before!â
âTom! Donât call him âmister,â heâs a knight!â
Wendel Lucian looked down awkwardly at the children swarming around his knees.
âSir Knight, what brings you here?â
When he raised his head, he saw herâAnne Clarke.
Her hair was neatly tied up, her eyes clear and gentle.
ââŠAnne Clarke. The woman accused of abusing Lady Annelia.â
The details heâd learned about her didnât match the face he was seeing now.
He hesitated before speaking.
âMrs. Clarke.â
Anne blinked in surprise.
âY-yes?â
She wiped her wet hands on her apron, trying to stay calm.
Wendel took a step forwardâbut stopped when several children crowded around his legs.
âKids, donât block the knight. Go inside now.â
A few obedient ones ran in first, and the rest followed hesitantly.
Even then, confusion lingered on Wendelâs face.
Anne tilted her head slightly.
âWhatâs going on?â
Why was this young knight here?
Had something happened to Annelia?
If so, he wouldnât come without warningâŠ
âIâm sorry, but youâll need to come with me,â Wendel said quietly.
Anneâs lips parted slightly, but no words came out.
The children sensed something was wrong and grew quiet.
After a long silence, she finally asked in a trembling voice,
âWhat about the childrenâŠ?â

Elsewhere, at the same timeâ
[Weâre on the move in six carriages, heading your way.]
Sharon Abner nodded as she listened to Wendelâs report through the communication crystal.
[There are twenty-four children total. Five carriages for them, and Mrs. Anne Clarke is riding with me.]
From Evehill to the Abner estate, the journey would take about six hours.
âYouâll arrive around midnight, then.â
[Yes, Your Grace.]
âThere was no resistance?â
There was a pause on the other end.
Then Wendel replied quietly,
[None. Sheâs cooperating without protest.]
âI see.â
Sharon looked out the window.
Outside, Annelia was laughing with the other children, sharing slices of cake.
Neither the Crown Prince nor Arwin had left her side even for a moment.
âSharon, what are you doing? Come have a drink!â
From across the garden, the Empress Dowager waved her wineglass cheerfully.
Sharon lowered her head and spoke quickly into the crystal.
âArrive on time. Donât be late.â
The party was set to end within the next two hours.
