Chapter 26
ââŚItâs not exactly some desperately yearning first love story, is it?â
Abelard shot a glare at Anaisâs words.
What. Why. What.
But Anais wasnât the type to cower simply because the Imperial Crown Prince was glaring at her.
Of course, if Anais had been sitting before the Crown Prince as Anais Fleur, she wouldâve thrown in some flattery like, âOh my, to be the Crown Princeâs lifesaver!â and left it at that.
But Anais was the type to know her place and acted accordingly.
She had already realized that whether she was a knight or not, as long as she wore the Dragon Knight Orderâs uniform, even the Empress would overlook most things.
So Anais listened to the Crown Princeâs story and pointed out the things that bothered her, one by one.
âAside from being blonde with green eyes, we donât even know her status, which makes her perfect for impersonation.â
âLady Florence? Youâre quite annoyingâhow about you reintroduce yourself, then?â
âReintroduce myself?â
The Crown Prince retorted with a confrontational tone.
âEveryone knows Lord Resaloniki is the Dragon Knight Commander, so thatâs fine. If you were his adjutant, I wouldâve accepted that.â
âThen couldnât you just accept it anyway?â
Anais tilted her head, giving a cute look.
It was a harmless gesture, like a small animal, but it only provoked the Crown Prince further.
âI think I have the right to hear an explanation about why youâre here, considering youâre neither a knight nor Lord Resalonikiâs lover.â
âI think the same, my lady.â
The Empress chimed in. Anais glanced at Elliot.
The story about a spirit possessing Anaisâs body was confidential, and she wasnât sure whether to speak freely about it.
But Elliot, who needed to answer, seemed lost in his thoughts.
Finally, Anais gently patted Elliotâs shoulder.
âLord Resaloniki? May I speak?â
âHuh? Ah, yes. I apologize.â
Elliot, who had been wearing a strangely troubled expression, belatedly nodded and apologized to the Empress and Crown Prince.
âI was briefly in conversation with the Dragon Lord in my consciousness.â
âAh, that can happen. Itâs fine. Go ahead and speak.â
The Empress nodded to Elliot with a slightly amazed expression. Elliot let out a sigh before continuing.
âWhile this is confidential to outsiders, I should tell you both. Lady Florence is not entirely unconnected to His Highness the Crown Prince.â
âWhat are you saying? Please donât tell me something frightening like sheâs my first love.â
At Abelardâs words, Anais looked at him with an expression that seemed to say, âHow dare you say such a rude thing!â, but Abelard just continued glaring at Anais.
Elliot cleared his throat, watching the two of them.
âMy apologies, but sheâs similar to those who troubled Your HighnessâŚâ
âNo way.â
âThe 33rd possessor in her bodyâŚâ
âNo wonder she bothered me every time I saw her!â
The Crown Prince burst out loudly before Elliot could finish speaking.
Anais shot him an implicit reproachful look, as if saying âShouldnât you listen to people until theyâve finished speaking?!â
Elliot waved his hand.
ââŚhas come and gone.â
ââŚCome and gone?â
âYes. Lady Florence has regained her consciousness completely, and has received the Dragon Lordâs command to find out why possessors remain in this world and how they leave.â
Elliot explained everything that had happened.
After hearing the reasons behind it and learning what Anais had been through, the Empress looked at her with a sympathetic expression and muttered softly.
âSo, thatâs why this young lady went mad⌠No wonder she seemed a bit unhingedâŚâ
What? Did I just get treated so smoothly and casually as a mad person?
Anais blinked in confusion.
Regardless, the Crown Prince, now understanding the explanation, propped his chin and responded sarcastically.
âWhat? Then canât we just kill this woman and solve everything?â
âNo, we canât!â
Anais quickly replied. The Crown Prince ignored her words entirely and continued speaking to Elliot.
âWhy do we need to find my first love? I like living as I am now. Rather than finding a first love I donât need and am sick of now, why donât we just kill this woman and restore the rift?â
Elliot answered seriously.
âIf killing Lady Florence doesnât solve the problem, weâd be in trouble. Iâve considered it, but minimal loss of life would be best.â
âYouâve already considered it?!â
As Anais bristled at Elliotâs words, the Empress, who had been quiet, sighed while opening her fan.
âBut itâs quite shocking that finding my sonâs first love is the process of repairing the worldâs rift. Above all, I worry about whether the Imperial family will become a laughingstockâŚâ
âUm⌠am I being ignored right now?â
âNevertheless, that is the natural order of things.â
âThe natural order is it.â
âCan anyyone actually see Anais? Hello?â
âBut Lord Resalonikiâs face looks rather complicated.â
Abelard scratched his chin.
âCould it be that even the Dragon Knight Commander has doubts about this mission?â
âThatâs not the case.â
Elliot firmly replied to Abelardâs words.
âThe Dragon Knight Order believes without doubt that every step, no matter how trivial it may seem at first glance, is for the continent if itâs ordered by the Dragon Lord.â
âWell, that may be true⌠but for me to meet my first love and marry them as the natural order? Good grief.â
The Crown Princeâs face became complicated. The Empress looked at the Crown Prince and snorted.
âIâm sorry, son, but my interpretation is a bit different. It seems the Dragon Lord has given quite appropriate and timely orders at the perfect moment.â
âMy noble mother, what interpretation did you make?â
âWell, between worrying that the next generation of the Imperial family might have 60 illegitimate children thanks to the Crown Prince seducing this and that young lady, and settling down with his first love, which seems more like the natural order?â
The Empress glanced at Anais, who had quickly jumped in.
âShe may be mad, but there are limits. Watch your words.â
Anais smiled brightly.
âWow, you can hear Anaisâs words! I thought you couldnât hear me, or maybe I suspected you might have already killed me and I was just floating around as a spirit!â
It might seem like she was being overly bold, but she didnât particularly care to be polite to people who were talking about killing her right in front of her face.
Besides, being treated as a mad person was the icing on the cake.
Watching Anais, Elliot rubbed his face wearily.
âAnyway, finding that first love girl is key. A secluded forest near Reims. Ah, you said it was the Magicianâs Forest, right?â
âYes.â
âBlonde hair, green eyes. You said she was fourteen back then, so we should look for someone around that age from that time.â
Abelard cleared his throat and added belatedly.
âAnd she was very beautiful.â
ââŚAh-ha.â
As Anais nodded knowingly, Abelard, feeling caught, asked, âWhy?â Anais smiled sweetly.
âWell, I just assumed she must have been beautiful.â
ââŚThatâs not it, is it? I swear I just heard an echo of âall men are the sameâ or something.â
At Abelardâs words, Anais clasped her hands together sympathetically.
âOh my, what should we do? Your Highness seems to be suffering from first love fever, despite what you say. How unfortunateâŚ. Iâll make sure to find your first love for you.â
âFlorence, I have a question.â
âWhat might that be, Your Highness?â
âAre you an imperial citizen?â
âWhy are you curious about my nationality?â
The Crown Prince smiled, showing his teeth.
âWhen I think that people like you could be my subjects, I somewhat understand the tyrants of history.â
âThis boy, I swear.â
The Empress pinched Abelardâs arm.
âJust because a crazy person is talking, doesnât mean you should stoop to their level.â
âAnais isnât an imperial subject, so no need to worry about becoming a tyrant!â
ââŚâ
Well, being called crazy was a bit upsetting, but at least it felt good to speak freely.
Elliot wrapped up the meeting.
âThankfully, Reims is on our way to our next destination, so weâll actively search for that young lady.â
âNext destination, is it? What other trivial yet national mission have you been tasked with besides finding my first love?â
Despite Abelardâs sarcasm, Elliot remained unfazed.
âThe Duchy of Neuze.â
ââŚDonât tell me. Youâre meeting the Duke of Neuze?â
The Empressâs expression hardened at Elliotâs words.
âYes.â
Since the Duke of Neuze in the North had also suffered from scandals involving the possessed, the Empressâs deduction was only natural.
The Empress sighed regretfully.
âThe Duke of Neuze also went through hardships because of those possessed people. I suppose itâs fortunate that he too has his own natural courseâŚâ
âHe got off easier than I did. I became known as a man who only chases blondes, while the Duke of Neuze became known as Mr. Faithful, and his popularity soared.â
Abelard grumbled. The Empress glared at him.
Her look seemed to say, âIsnât that all because you went around philandering afterward?â
Thatâs when it happened. A scream was heard from outside the gazebo where the four were sitting.
âKyaah!â
