Chapter 8 …
 The Magnificent Thief
âMarlene. To put it bluntly, your future as an adventurer looks pretty dark.â
ââŚDonât you think thatâs a bit too blunt?â
Marlene frowned, glancing back every now and thenâclearly still worried about Abel, whom she had left behind at home due to his injuries.
Admittedly, my explanation lacked a bit of tact. So I rephrased it in gentler words.
âYouâre a bluebird with wings who canât fly, trapped in a gilded cage.â
âJust say it straight.â
âWhy so picky? Anyway, the real issue is your class.â
ăThe girl youâve taken as an assistantâMarlene, tiger beastkin, age 14âalready bears the fate of a âThief,â having learned burglary to survive.ă
âDo you even know how a personâs class is determined?â
âNot at all.â
Being an uneducated orphan who had learned her trade under a thief rather than in a proper school, Marlene lacked basic knowledge. Her intelligence stat was barely 2.
But that wasnât an unforgivable flaw.
If she didnât know, then Iâd just teach her.
âClasses are etched into your soul through repeated battles, training, or labor. And youâyouâre already a skilled burglar.â
âWell, skilled might be a stretchâŚâ
At least she didnât deny it.
âYouâre a tiger beastkin, right? Any other blood mixed in?â
âNo.â
âThen strength and stamina are your biggest assets.â
âOf course. I could easily beat Kar in an arm wrestle!â
She struck a proud pose, flexing her arm muscles for me to see.
âBeing stronger than a cultist isnât something to brag about. And this isnât the time to be proud. Your class is already confirmed as Thief.â
âThat actually sounds kind of cool.â
âItâs not. It just means âpetty criminal.ââ
A low-tier class with mediocre potential.
Still, the Thief had versatilityâminor magic, sleight of hand, and stealthâenough to outperform cultists in the race for the bottom.
âTo grow as a Thief, youâll need dexterity and finesse. But youâre a tiger beastkinâbuilt for strength and endurance. You took the wrong path entirely.â
She was what one might call a jack-of-all-tradesâdecent but not outstanding in anything.
âCanât I change my class?â
âNo.â
ââŚSo Iâm hopeless?â
âNot at all.â
âYou literally just said my future was dark.â
âThatâs if you ignore my guidance. If you listen well, your future will shine as bright as the stars.â
Even a tiger Thief could become greatâif trained properly.
A misfit build could turn into a master of all trades with the right hand guiding it.
And Marleneâs senses stat was an astounding 19.
âWith the right support⌠youâll become a magnificent thief.â
Her growth potential was enormous, especially with my knowledge backing her.
âThis is going to be fun,â I thought, feeling genuine excitement for the first time in a while.
âMagnificent or not, itâs still just a thief,â she muttered with a faint laugh.
But her tail swished happily behind her.
The Shady Shop
By the time Iâd finished explaining the basics, weâd arrived at one of my old hauntsâan adventurerâs supply shop.
[The Shady Gaze]
A cultist-run store that stocked various exploration suppliesâcheap and reliable.
âWelcome, customers!â
The shopkeeper, a golden retriever beastkin, greeted us with a bright smile.
I nodded lightly and headed straight for the reagents section.
Basilisk eyes, ogre hearts, elf heel callus.
The prices were alarmingly tempting.
âWaitâvolcanic troll blood for only 3 silver?â
âIs that cheap?â
âItâs criminally cheap.â
I picked up a vial filled with blue liquid, and faint text shimmered across the glass.
ăContaminated blood of a volcanic troll. Drinking it may cause infection. Perfect for serving to your enemies.ă
Ah, diseased troll blood. No wonder it was cheap.
I almost put it backâthen paused.
âActually⌠this might be perfect.â
The peculiar tang of corrupted blood might be exactly the exotic flavor Ridni would enjoy.
âIâll take three bottles.â
âExcellent choice!â
Marlene swiftly packed them into her leather satchel. Efficient. I liked that.
Then something caught my eye.
[Bundle of Dog Beastkin Teeth â 5 Silver]
ăSlightly damaged dog beastkin teeth. Add to offerings for the patron of infinite knowledge and theyâll be pleased!ă
âOne gold each elsewhere, and here theyâre selling a whole bundle for five silverâŚâ
Marleneâs tail shot straight up.
âShopkeeper, whyâs this so cheap?â
âOh, my sonâs been teething latelyâate too many sweets, so most of them are decayed. The Tower and Alchemy Guild donât buy low-grade stuff like this.â
âIâll take the lot.â
Jackpot.
Once weâd cleaned out half the reagents section, I moved to the tools.
âPick up a pickaxe and those clam-shell things, two of them. And three stamina potions with a candle set.â
âWhatâs all this for?â
âWhat elseâa dungeon run.â
Then I grabbed two red-bound books from a nearby shelf.
âWhy are there books in a supply shop?â
âYou really know nothing.â
They werenât ordinary books.
âMystic Tomes. Youâve heard of those, right?â
âOh, those! The really expensive ones?â
âExactly. And do you know why theyâre so expensive?â
âBecause theyâre⌠entertaining?â
âBecause reading one lets you learn a Mystic Skill.â
A way to learn skillsâone of the most valuable resources in the world.
âAnyone can use them, as long as their class matches. No limits on use. Incredible, right?â
âThat explains the price.â
âSome adventurers risk their lives in high-tier dungeons just to find one. A single tome can sell for more than our thousand-gold tribute.â
Marleneâs eyes sparkled.
âThen Iâll have to hit those high-tier dungeons too!â
âNot yet. First, we focus on growth. The money will come later.â
âAnd the tribute to the Thievesâ Guild?â
âForget about them. Iâll handle it.â
That degenerate guildmaster is already marked for sacrifice.
âYouâre sure thatâs safe? Heâs dangerous.â
âI wonât go myself. Iâll ask a friend.â
âYou have friends?â
âWhat kind of question is that? Not yetâbut soon.â
A certain man in District 6 was about to become my âdear friend.â
âAnyway, stop talking and start reading. You donât have to memorizeâjust skim through to absorb it.â
âKar, you might be weird, but youâre a good person.â
Her compliment came with a hint of suspicion. Still, she opened the tomes obediently.
I, meanwhile, drew out a silver-covered bookâthe hidden relic Iâd taken from the Ghoul Dungeon.
Her ears perked up.
âThatâs a hidden piece, right? [Ghoulâs Agility]?â
âRight. Cleric-only, though, so you canât learn it.â
âWhat does it do?â
âMakes you move as fast as a ghoul.â
Considering ghouls had an Agility stat of 15, that was no small feat.
âOne minute of boosted speed,â I said.
âJust a minute?â
âOne minute of godlike movement. At auction, itâd start at 300 gold.â
For low-level adventurers, it was practically divine.
Too bad my own Agility was fixed at 1, thanks to the curse of the nature god.
âSo⌠Iâll just have to use it unconventionally.â
The secret lay in synergyâwith another hidden piece in our next dungeon.
âNow focus on your reading.â
âYessir.â
While she flipped through her pages, I traced my eyes along the strange script of the silver tomeâhalf poem, half prayer.
In the game, it wouldâve taken one click to learn. Now, I had to earn it.
But somehow, that made it satisfying.
ăMystic Skill [Ghoulâs Agility] has fused with your body!ă
When she finally closed her books, Marleneâs face twisted into mild discontent.
âKarâŚâ
âWhat now? I just spent a fortune on you.â
â[Basic Dagger Technique] and [Basic Throwing]. Theyâre beginner-level Mystics!â
âSharp as always,â I admitted.
âYouâre rightâtheyâre cheap. But even cheap things matter.â
âA master is built on strong foundations.â
âFor someone like youâa tiger Thiefâthese fundamentals will help more than flashy skills.â
She pouted, still unconvinced.
âKeep rereading them when you have time. Your proficiency will rise the more you study.â
ââŚOkay.â
âGood. Because weâre done here.â
âFinally going home to rest?â
âNo.â
I smiled.
âWeâre going straight to the dungeon.â
