Chapter : 11
When Lucia and Julian left the hall, Scarlett broke the frozen atmosphere.
âCome on, come on. Whyâs everyone just standing there? Move along.â
As if time had been stopped, the still people began to move again.
âWhat on earth was thatâŠ?â
Lucas watched his younger sister walk away, his heart tangled.
When she first confessed that she liked Herwin, he had suffered the first shock. Then Herwinâs rejection gave him a second. But now, with everything dissolving into nothing, even the weight of those earlier shocks felt as if theyâd vanished into thin air.
âDoes that mean sis likes our brotherâŠ?â
Henry, too, seemed stunned, mumbling in a daze.
Now that I think of it, doesnât this little guy really like Lucia?
âHenry likes sis, but he likes brother tooâŠâ
For a five-year-old, the sudden news was far too much to make sense of.
Lucas patted Henryâs shoulder.
âYouâd better give up. Youâve got no chance.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre never going to catch up to Herwin. Maybe when you grow up, who knows. But right nowâŠâ
ââŠI donât really get what youâre saying.â
Henry wrinkled his nose. Lucas thought about explaining, but then decided ignorance was bliss.
âJust give up early.â
âHey, donât push my head down! Youâll make me shorter!â
Henry wriggled to escape Lucasâs hand, but Lucasâs mischievous side was stirred.
âLet me gooo!â
âBrought you all this way and this is how you act, huh.â
Lucas teased Henry affectionately, though his eyes flicked sideways toward where Herwin and Lucia had disappeared.
ââŠTheyâll sort it out themselves.â
He didnât want to dwell on the two of them any longer.
âMiss! Your hairâs still wet!â
âYouâll catch a cold like this!â
Fresh out of the shower, Lucia burst out of the bathroom, her hair dripping, dampening her clothes â but she didnât care.
Her eyes darted around.
âAh! Donât take that!â
âPardon?â
A maid, about to pick up the clothes Lucia had taken off, froze in surprise.
Lucia hurried over and snatched them back.
âFound it!â
Rummaging through the hidden pocket in the dress, she pulled out something green.
âWhat is that, miss?â
âMy number one treasure!â
âThat leaf⊠is your treasure?â
Without answering the bewildered maid, Lucia hurried to her desk.
On the desk sat the music box sheâd brought from the capital.
She opened it and turned it upside down.
Ribbons, beads, hairpins â things sheâd considered most precious just an hour ago â clattered onto the floor and desk.
When the box was empty, she carefully placed the clover inside.
âHehe, my treasure.â
âSigh⊠miss, youâll catch a cold.â
Only when the maids approached with towels did Luciaâs brief escapade come to an end.
âHerwin, how could you embarrass her by rejecting her outright like that?â
Scarlett approached her son, who was curled up under the blanket.
Really, so stubborn.
Childrenâs confessions under the age of ten were innocent and adorable â enough to make one smile.
Scarlett plopped down on the bed, gazing tenderly at the lump beneath the covers.
âMom would be happy if it were Lucia. Sheâs kindhearted, open, even cute. Isnât she wonderful? Donât turn her down out of pride. You like her too, donât you, Herwin?â
A little nudge was often all it took for children to speak their truth. Scarlett was sure heâd come out of the blanket soon.
But no matter how much time passed, Herwin gave no response.
âHerwin, are you listening to me?â
Silence again.
He always answered his parents, no matter how upset he was. Something was off.
ââŠHerwin?â
She touched the lump of the blanket. His body was trembling beneath.
Panicked, Scarlett yanked the blanket away.
âDonât look at me, donât look at me, donât look at meâŠâ
âOh heavens! Herwin!â
Herwin, his crimson eyes unfocused, muttered the same words over and over, his face vacant.
Scarlettâs heart dropped. She pulled him tightly into her arms.
âHerwin, calm down. Mommyâs here. Hmm? HerwinâŠâ
ââŠI donât like Lucia. So donât look at meâŠâ
âYes, yes, you donât like Lucia. Just pleaseâŠâ
His breathing grew even more ragged.
When he shut his eyes, grinning childrenâs faces appeared vividly in his mind.
Cackle, cackle, cackle!
Their laughter echoed in his ears.
At first their voices were childish, but soon they deepened, multiplied, surrounding him.
âHaah⊠hahhâŠâ
Even though he hadnât faltered when facing the retainersâ children recently, it had never truly gone away.
The trauma hadnât disappeared â it had only stayed hidden.
ââŠ! Doctor! Fetch the doctor!â
Herwin barely opened his eyes. Scarlettâs desperate shouting filled his vision.
âHerwinâs my favorite!â
As he shut them again, Luciaâs confession replayed.
Thud! Thud! ThudâŠ!
His pounding heart and gasping breaths slowly began to ease.
Remembering Luciaâs smiling face steadied him a little. But then, fear seized him again.
I donât like LuciaâŠ
If he rejected her, maybe everything would go back to normal.
To shield himself from the storm inside, he repeated it over and over: I donât like Lucia, I donâtâŠ
Through blurred vision, he saw servants and a doctor rushing in.
HerwinâŠ!
The memory of rescuing Lucia from the wild dogs on the hill, of her tearfully clinging to him, flashed before him.
But before he could process it, consciousness slipped away.
âI believe the young master has suffered severe psychological shock.â
The doctor spoke after his examination.
âNot because of the dog bite?â
âNo. Aside from a small bruise, heâs in excellent physical health.â
âThen what could have shocked him so?â
âWell⊠weâll know more when he wakes. But my guess is â the stares of others.â
âStares?â
âYes. I wasnât in the hall, but I heard Lady Agnes confessed to him there.â
âYes, she did. But how is that related?â
âBecause she confessed in front of everyone, the young master must have felt all eyes on him. He is far more sensitive to such things than most children his age. Enduring that weight of attention must have been unbearable.â
âYou mean Herwin canât stand crowds?â
âNot quite. Itâs not the presence of people â itâs the simultaneous, concentrated stares focused solely on him.â
Scarlett was stunned. She had never imagined her son had such a problem. He had never shown signs before.
ââŠAh, could it beâŠ!â
A thought struck her suddenly.
âDo you have something in mind?â
âThere was an incident with the retainersâ children some years ago. Since then, whenever someone calls him âprettyâ or âgirlish,â he reacts far more sensitively than normal.â
âThen it may well be connected.â
Thinking back, she realized those children had indeed been present in the hall.
âFor now, let the young master rest undisturbed until tomorrow. Restrict entry to his room â only the duke, you, and his personal maid should be allowed in.â
âYes, Iâll do that.â
After the doctor left, Scarlett gently stroked her sonâs sleeping face.
She could not bring herself to leave his side until he woke.
âIâm sorry, miss. No one is to be admitted. Youâll have to see the young master another time.â
âEven me? But Iâm his little sisterâŠâ
âMy apologies, Master Henry. If you have something to say, tell me, and Iâll pass it on to him.â
The day after the commotion, Lucia, Lucas, and Henry went to see Herwin.
But just like yesterday, they were denied.
Yesterday it had made sense â Herwin mustâve been exhausted. But even today? It was strange.
Denied as well, Henryâs eyes welled up.
âIs he sick?â
ââŠI heard heâs just very worn out and needs to rest today.â
Lucas glanced at the tightly shut door and sighed.
âIf thatâs how it is, nothing we can do. Letâs come back tomorrow.â
âBut I wanna see brotherâŠâ
Henry whimpered. Lucas scooped him up, and this time the boy didnât resist, leaning against him.
Patting Henryâs small back, Lucas noticed someone missing and turned.
âLucia, why arenât you coming?â
âIâm staying here.â
âWhat?â
Lucia stood rooted before Herwinâs door like a stone statue.
Even Lucas â and the maid barring the way â were startled by her obstinacy.
âMiss, itâs no use. Heâll be better tomorrow, so please justââ
âI know. But Iâll still stay here.â
She clutched her music box tightly and sat against the wall across from the door.
The maid fidgeted nervously, until Lucas came over.
âYouâll be bored here alone.â
âI wonât. I wonât be bored.â
ââŠHuh. Is that so?â
After a moment of thought, Lucas sat down beside her.
âIf youâre staying, then Iâll stay too. Henry, you donât mind, right?â
Henry nodded and looked toward Lucia.
âYeah. I wanna sit with sis.â
And so, the three of them sat together outside Herwinâs door.
âDonât mind us. Go on and keep looking after Herwin.â
Hesitating, the maid finally slipped inside the room.
The corridor grew quiet.
The heavy silence felt awkward, and Lucas sneaked a glance sideways.
Henry had opened Luciaâs music box, fiddling with it. A delicate tune drifted out, and inside sat a single four-leaf clover.
