The Golden Harvest and the Prelude to Iron
As the forest trees began to turn red and gold, and the sky grew high and clear, autumn’s rich bounty arrived around the little cabin where Akio and his family lived.
Compared to last year, the harvest was far more organized and efficient. The results spoke for themselves — the fields were filled with yams, beans, and even a few kinds of grain-like crops that Akio had experimented with, all ripe and ready to be gathered.
“Alright, everyone! Today we start the full-scale harvest! Let’s make it efficient — and fun!”
At Akio’s cheerful shout, the children raised their fists and echoed, “Yeah!”
With their powerful handcart, the improved farming tools Akio had designed, and — above all — the experience, knowledge, and teamwork they had built over the past year, the family was stronger than ever.
Arto, wielding the new digging hoe he had made with Akio’s guidance, unearthed plump yams one after another. His skill was impressive enough to call him a full-fledged worker now.
Kenta, nimble as always, climbed trees to shake down nuts and gathered mushrooms — the edible kind certified by Sylvia — by the basketful.
Ayane took charge of preserving food, using the herbal knowledge she had learned from Sylvia. She dried vegetables, salted them, or carried them to the storage pit dug beneath the ground for winter. The dried meat mixed with herbs and the pickled nuts she made were family favorites.
Miko and Yume, the youngest, did their best to help — collecting stray beans that had fallen from the plants and sorting herbs by type under Ayane’s direction. Seeing the vegetables they had planted and watered grow into such abundance filled their eyes with wonder.
One of the biggest events of this autumn was the completion of their new cooking stove made of fire-resistant bricks, along with Ayane’s long-dreamed-of bread oven.
Built over several weeks by Akio, Sylvia, and Arto, these were true symbols of their progress.
The new stove provided stable heat and could hold multiple pots at once, making Ayane’s cooking far more efficient.
And then, the bread oven. When it was first fired up, the dough — made from a mix of nut flour and yam flour — was carefully placed inside. As it baked, a warm, fragrant aroma spread through the cabin, and the children could barely sit still in anticipation.
When the bread finally emerged from the oven, it was golden and crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside — perfect in every way.
“This is amazing…! I’ve never tasted bread this good before…!”
Ayane said, her voice trembling with emotion.
The children shouted in delight — “It’s so good!” “Can we have this every day?” — while Sylvia quietly savored her piece and said,
“…Not bad at all. The fire brings out the flavor beautifully.”
Her calm words were high praise for both Akio’s craftsmanship and Ayane’s baking.
With the harvest complete and their new cooking equipment ready, the family’s diet and lifestyle had clearly improved. Their preparations for winter were going smoothly.
Then, one night, after their winter tasks had settled down, the family sat together by the warm hearth.
Akio picked up a reddish-black stone from the corner of the cabin — what he believed to be iron ore — and gazed at it thoughtfully.
“If I can find a way to extract iron from this… our lives could change completely.”
Sylvia nodded quietly.
“But to do that, you’ll need a special furnace capable of reaching immense heat — and most importantly, good charcoal. Ordinary firewood can’t produce that kind of temperature. Only purified, powerful charcoal can.”
Her words made it clear that the path to iron would not be an easy one.
But Akio’s eyes were not discouraged — they gleamed with the spark of a new challenge.
“Charcoal, huh… I remember — on Earth, people made it by burning wood without air. If that’s the case, maybe…”
He began to imagine the design of a charcoal kiln in his head — using their remaining firebricks and what he remembered of efficient combustion methods.
“Alright. Before winter really sets in, let’s try making charcoal. That’ll be our first step toward iron.”
Akio’s determined voice was met with solemn nods from Sylvia and Arto.
Ayane watched them with quiet trust, her expression warm.
The fruitful autumn had brought the family not only abundance but also personal growth.
The new stove and oven enriched their daily life, filling it with warmth and flavor.
And now, in Akio’s heart, a new dream — iron — had begun to take shape as a concrete goal.
Before the golden forest fell asleep under winter’s snow, would they manage to create that “black diamond” — charcoal?
Akio and his family’s unending journey of creation continued.
