Chapter – 44Â
Stayed with Yu Zhi All Night at the Hospital
Ten minutes earlier.
A black luxury car slowly entered the narrow alleys of the urban village. Sitting in the back seat, Pei Nianâan looked around anxiously, clearly irritated.
The address of Yu Zhiâs home had been sent to her by Xia Qingqing. To prevent her from warning Yu Zhi, Pei Yanci had confiscated her phone.
Pei Nianâan was extremely unhappy.
She turned to her brother beside her.
âBro, seriously? Is this necessary?â
âItâs just five million. Itâs not like our family is short on money. Did you really have to come check personally?â
Without lifting his head from the documents on his tablet, Pei Yanci replied, âShut up.â
Pei Nianâan pouted.
In the front seat, old Wang, the driver, focused intently on the road ahead. Seeing how narrow the passage was, he couldnât help commenting, âThis road is really too tightâŠâ
Hearing that, Pei Yanci finally looked up. Outside the window, the car was practically brushing against the worn, mottled walls. He frowned but said nothing.
Pei Nianâan also glanced outside, then at her brother:
âI told you Yu Zhiâs family is poor. You didnât believe me? Anyone living in a place like this canât possibly have money.â
Pei Yanci: ââŠâ
The car crawled forward like a turtle. After turning into yet another alley, Pei Nianâan finally lost her patience.
âThis is way too slow. Itâs making me anxious. Walking would be faster! How about we get out and walk?â
âYoung lady,â Old Wang tightened his grip on the wheel, âbetter stay in the car. A place like this is complicated, not very safe.â
Pei Nianâan was about to argue, but Pei Yanci shot her a warning look.
She immediately shrank back into her seat.
But the next second, the car suddenly braked hard. Pei Nianâan hit her forehead on the back of the front seat.
Old Wang panicked. âMiss Pei! Are you alright?â
Pei Nianâan’s eyes filled with tears from the pain. Pei Yanci asked, âWhat happened?â
Old Wang pointed ahead. âA group of thugs are fighting. We need to turn around.â
Hearing that, Pei Yanci narrowed his eyes and looked forward.
In the dim alley, seven or eight figures were tangled in a chaotic fight, completely indistinguishable from one another.
âThatâs strangeâŠâ Old Wang, who had the clearest view, widened his eyes.
âItâs not a brawl. Itâs a group of thugs beating up a girl!â
Pei Nianâan leaned forward, gripping the seat to look more clearly. Someone had collapsed on the ground, and the girl in the middle suddenly turned her head toward their car.
Pei Nianâanâs eyes flew wide open.
âBRO!!!â she screamed, âThatâs Yu Zhi! Itâs Yu Zhi!â
At that exact moment, they saw one of the thugs pick up a brick and smash it hard against the back of Yu Zhiâs head.
âAh!â Pei Nianâan covered her eyes in horror.
Pei Yanci also saw it, though he said nothing.
Old Wang nervously asked, âSir, should we go help the girl?â
Pei Nianâan opened her eyes again and was about to shout for them to save Yu Zhiâbut then she froze.
Not far away, Yu Zhi, like an enraged lion, slammed the thug against the wall with brutal force.
Pei Nianâan stared, stunned.
Damnâso cool!
Yu Zhi was actually this strong?!
Doesnât that mean making her act like her lackey was a complete waste of talent?
Soon, Yu Zhi knocked down all the thugs. She staggered as she turned, her face covered in blood, looking toward the car lights.
Pei Nianâan finally snapped out of it. She quickly flung open the door and ran out.
Pei Yanci and the driver followed behind.
Pei Nianâan shouted Yu Zhiâs name. In the next second, Yu Zhi collapsed straight to the ground.
Around her, the thugs were curled up, groaning in pain.
Pei Yanci grabbed his sisterâs wrist. âStay right there.â
Then he strode forward toward Yu Zhi.
He crouched down to check her condition.
Yu Zhi was already unconscious. There was a wound on the back of her head, blood gushing continuously, soaking half her collar.
Pei Yanci scanned the area, then glanced at the driver. âGet people here to deal with them.â
Old Wang nodded and stepped aside to make a call.
Kneeling on one knee, Pei Yanci pulled off his tie and quickly folded it into a strip to press on the wound and stop the bleeding.
Then he picked up Yu Zhi and carried her toward the car.
Seeing him approach, Pei Nianâan immediately noticed the blood covering Yu Zhiâs face.
She had never seen anything like this. She burst into tears, voice trembling:
âBro! Is Yu Zhi going to die?!â
âGet in the car first.â Pei Yanci looked at her. âSit in the front. Donât look back.â
Pei Nianâan nodded frantically and obediently climbed into the front seat.
The next morning, in the VIP hospital room.
Pei Yanci sat on the sofa reading documents. He stared for over ten minutes but couldnât process a single line.
The words began to blur. This inefficiency made him extremely irritated.
He glanced at the person on the bed, then shut the folder with a snap, feeling a headache coming on.
Last night had been hectic. After bringing Yu Zhi to the hospital, Pei Nianâan had refused to leave, insisting on staying to watch over her.
She even made Pei Yanci request leave for herârefusing to go to school.
He was very annoyed and suggested hiring a special-care nurse for Yu Zhi, but Pei Nianâan insisted on doing it herself.
Finally, to stop her from skipping school, Pei Yanci had to say he would stay instead. Only then did she agree to leave.
Now thinking back, Pei Yanci felt he must have lost his mind.
His sister was crazyâand he let himself be dragged into her madness.
He actually stayed in the hospital with Yu Zhi all night.
While his thoughts drifted, Xu Fei suddenly spoke. âSir, sheâs awake.â
On the bedâ
Yu Zhi felt her eyelids weighed down, as if filled with lead.
When she forced them open, the glaring white light made her shut them again instantly.
So bright⊠so whiteâŠ
Had she⊠gone to heaven?
Yu Zhi wondered groggily, until a strange male voice came from beside her.
She frowned and tried opening her eyes again. This time the brightness was bearable.
She slowly turned her headâand saw the man sitting on the sofa.
He turned to look at her at the same moment.
It was Pei Yanci.
Yu Zhi blinked and blurted out:
âI⊠didnât die?â
Her voice was hoarse beyond belief.
Pei Yanci stood up and walked over, letting out a short scoff. âEvildoers live the longest.â
Yu Zhi: ââŠâ
Just that one sentence made pain throb at the back of her skull. A buzzing filled her ears.
She frowned in discomfort.
The doctor entered with two nurses, carrying a pupil pen and examination forms.
He lifted her eyelids and shone the light across her pupils.
âFollow my finger with your eyes.â
After a quick series of tests, the doctor packed up his tools and asked,
âAre you feeling nauseous or experiencing any blurred vision?â
Yu Zhi gently shook her headâand immediately regretted it when darkness flashed before her eyes.
The doctor said, âPreliminary diagnosis is a mild concussion. Weâll observe for 48 hours to rule out delayed intracranial hemorrhage.â
Then he turned toward Pei Yanci and his assistant, hesitated, and asked:
âMr. Pei, which one of you is her family?â
Pei Nianâan (imaginary commentary): Dear brother, you better thank me! Without me, where would you get your future wife?!
