Chapter – 33Â
Pei-jie, it doesnât matter who gets the money, right?
After class, Yu Zhi dragged Pei Nianâan toward the cafeteria.
She claimedâquite grandlyâthat todayâs meal was on her.
Pei Nianâan didnât really want to go, but she couldnât resist Yu Zhiâs enthusiasm, so she reluctantly followed.
Yu Zhi found them a random seat in the bustling cafeteria. The young lady frowned at the noisy crowd, clearly displeased.
Seeing her expression, Yu Zhi immediately pulled out disinfectant wipes and carefully cleaned the table and chairs before letting Pei Nianâan sit.
âPei-jie, the cafeteriaâs got your favorite braised pork ribs today. Wait hereâIâll go get them for you!â
Soon, Yu Zhi returned with a tray of food and set it in front of Pei Nianâan, handing her a pair of disposable chopsticks.
Pei Nianâan took them, unwrapped the paper, and poked the rice a couple of times.
âIâm already full from anger,â she muttered, tossing the chopsticks aside. âWhat kind of person is she anyway? Sheâs not even afraid of frogs!?â
Yu Zhi quickly soothed her: âDonât be mad, donât be mad. Letâs not stoop to her level!â
But how could Pei Nianâan not be angry? She was practically fuming to death.
Yu Zhi glanced at her expression, then said seriously, âPei-jie, have you ever thoughtâwhy are we always so focused on Wen Ying?â
Pei Nianâan frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
Yu Zhi set down her chopsticks and analyzed solemnly, âPei-jie, what do you think is your biggest conflict with Wen Ying?â
Pei Nianâan gritted her teeth. âSheâs seducing Chengnian-ge!â
Yu Zhi sighed. âThere are so many men in the worldâcanât we just let her have that one?â
Pei Nianâanâs eyes widened. âWhat did you say?!â
Yu Zhi quickly slid over to sit beside her, calming the furious young lady:
âDonât get mad! Pei-jie, listen. Your biggest issue with Wen Ying is that you think sheâs seducing Young Master Gu, but honestlyâwhat does she have that you donât? Her familyâs not as good, her looks arenât as stunning. Anyone with sense would choose you!â
Pei Nianâanâs mood improved slightly. She picked up a rib. âNow thatâs what I like to hear.â
Yu Zhi smiled, pulled out a brightly colored romance novel from her bag, and handed it to her.
âPei-jie, this is for you.â
Pei Nianâan glanced at the garish cover. âWhatâs it about?â
Yu Zhiâs smile deepened.
âItâs a school romance. The storyâs about a domineering school hunk who falls in love with a poor girl, abandoning the rich heiress whoâs his social equal. The heiress bullies the poor girl, the guy retaliates against the heiress, and in the end the heiress dies miserably while the couple lives happily ever afterâŠâ
She sighed dramatically.
âTell me, Pei-jie, why is it that in all these novels, the beautiful, elegant heiress always ends up with some stupid, blind male lead?â
Pei Nianâan: â???â
Why did that story sound⊠weirdly familiar?
Pei Nianâan set down her chopsticks, picked up the novel, and said:
âIâm not eating anymore. Sign me in for class this afternoon. Iâm going home to read this.â
âWait, Pei-jie,â Yu Zhi said through a mouthful of rice, swallowing quickly when she realized what that meant,
âYouâre supposed to help move the new art supplies this afternoon.â
Pei Nianâan frowned. âWhat supplies?â
âThe new plaster casts and art materials for the studio,â Yu Zhi said, checking her phone. âThe class rep posted the duty schedule in the group chat yesterday.â
âIâm not going,â Pei Nianâan said flatly.
âThatâs not really okayâŠâ Yu Zhi hesitated. âIâve got a club meeting this afternoon, or Iâd help you myself. Maybe you can find someone to cover for you?â
Pei Nianâan thought for a momentâthen suddenly stood up and shouted across the whole cafeteria:
âWhoâs free to help me move the art supplies? Iâll pay 10,000 yuanâcash!â
Yu Zhi: â!!!â
Ten thousand yuan?!
You couldâve said that earlier! Who cares about some stupid club meeting when the young ladyâs offering a job like that!
As soon as Pei Nianâanâs words echoed through the cafeteria, heads turned, and a buzz of chatter broke out.
âIs she serious?â
âSo generous? No way, thatâs a scam!â
âTen thousand to move stuff? Iâll move ten loads!â
Then, a clear voice rose from the crowd:
âPei Nianâan, donât you think itâs wrong to use money to manipulate people?â
Wen Ying stepped forward. Though her tone was gentle, her words carried clearly across the cafeteria.
âWeâre all classmatesâequal. Not your servants.â
The crowd began murmuring.
âYeah, sheâs so arrogant. Canât believe thereâs still princess types like her in college.â
âHaving money doesnât make you better. Ugh.â
With some support, Wen Ying grew more righteous.
âYou may be used to solving everything with money, but here, everyone has their dignity.â
Then she turned to the hesitant students. âThink about itâwould you really sell your pride for a bit of money?â
Pei Nianâan rolled her eyes. âItâs not like Iâm holding a gun to your headsâŠâ
âThatâs exactly the problem!â Wen Yingâs voice rose, her eyes slightly red.
âYouâre exploiting the economic gap and creating inequality! Some classmates are struggling financially. What youâre doing isnât helpingâitâs humiliating them!â
âAnd Pei Missy, do you even realize this is unfair? Everyone takes turns moving supplies. Why do you get to pay your way out?â
Pei Nianâan gave her a look. âAnd whatâs that got to do with you? Iâm not spending your money.â
âThis is a group taskâwe should all participate equally!â Wen Ying said, voice firm. âYouâre setting a bad example.â
Pei Nianâan was speechless. Before she could respond, Yu Zhi suddenly rushed forward, nearly bumping into Wen Ying.
âPei-jie, Pei-jie! Iâll do it! Iâll move it! Ten thousand, right?â
She grabbed Pei Nianâanâs arm and hurried out, not forgetting to wink.
âPei-jie, who cares who gets the money, right? Everyone stand backâlet me handle it!â
Pei Nianâan frowned. âDidnât you have a club meeting?â
Yu Zhi waved a hand. âThe meeting can waitâyou come first!â
Pei Nianâan smirked proudly.
Beside them, Wen Yingâs face turned pale. âYu ZhiâŠâ
Yu Zhi brushed past her. âExcuse meâyouâre blocking my way to making money.â
âYu Zhi!â Wen Ying grabbed her arm, looking heartbroken.
âI donât know why youâve changed like this, but have you forgotten what you said before? You wanted to earn scholarship money through your own effort. Your momâs still sickâif she knew you were doing this, sheâd be so disappointed!â
Yu Zhi rolled her eyes. Wowâwhat a pro at moral blackmail.
She turned around and said, âYou know my momâs sick, and youâre stopping me from earning money? Are you insane?â
Yu Zhi sneered. âWould you rather my momâs condition get worse because I couldnât afford treatment? Thatâd make you happy, huh?â
Wen Yingâs face paled. âThatâs not what I meant! I just think we should earn money through honest workââ
âIâm not being honest? What, moving supplies isnât labor now?â Yu Zhi widened her eyes dramatically and looked around at the onlookers.
âEveryone, tell meâdoes moving stuff count as work or not?â
