Chapter 6
 The Beginning
(6) A Guy Who Seems to Have Some Complicated Circumstances I Donât Even Understand Myself
Arisa led me by the hand as we followed behind Urisa.
âThis way,â he said, heading up a staircase at the back of the guild.
âBrother? Weâre not going to the counter?â
âYeah. Just look at Shunsuke â doesnât he seem like heâs got some kind of complicated backstory? I asked for a private room.â
âAh, that makes sense.â
The siblings whispered over my head as we climbed.
On the third floor, a long hallway stretched ahead, with several doors on both sides. Each door had a plaque above it â probably labels â but I couldnât read any of them.
Even though I could understand their speech, I couldnât read the writing. That had been bothering me ever since entering town â all the signs, shop names, guild boards. I couldnât make sense of any of them, and the feeling of unease kept growing.
At the end of the hall, one door stood open. We entered, and Arisa closed it behind us.
The room looked like a principalâs office.
There was a sofa set near the door, and farther back, a large desk. Beside it stood a young woman â maybe a clerk? Though her wide, flowing dress didnât look very businesslike.
Someone sat at the desk, writing. They had the dignified air of someone important â definitely giving off âprincipalâ vibes. When they stood, I noticed a slight limp.
âSo thatâs the boy?â
âSorry to trouble you personally, Guildmaster,â said Urisa, bowing his head for the first time since Iâd met him.
Guess this person really was important.
âNo trouble. If youâre the one asking, Iâll make time. Arisa, you look well too.â
âYes! Good evening. Thank you for meeting us.â
Oh, right â I should probably bow too.
âThank you for seeing me.â
The Guildmaster motioned for us to sit at the sofa. I ended up between the two siblings.
âShunsuke, can you remove that magic tool from your eyes?â
âAhâ itâs not a magic tool, but⌠sure.â
âI donât suppose you have a mirror?â I couldnât exactly pull out my smartphone here.
Arisa pulled a hand mirror from her bag.
âHere.â
âThanks, Arisa.â
When I smiled gratefully, she blushed a little.
âY-youâre welcomeâŚâ
I hurriedly removed my colored contacts â carefully, since even through them it still freaked me out to touch my eyeball.
Then they asked me to remove my hood. The moment I did, the woman near the desk gasped softly.
The Guildmaster sat across from us on the other sofa.
âI am Dominic von Margan, Guildmaster of this Adventurerâs Guild â and also the magistrate overseeing this town of Polygon and three others.â
Four towns? That sounded like an insane workload. This Dominic guy must be incredible.
âIâm Shunsuke. Pleased to meet you.â
âLikewise, Shunsuke. Where did you come from?â
Was it okay to tell the truth
âFrom Tokyo,â I said â though technically from the shabby outskirts.
âTokyo-to? Never heard of it,â muttered Urisa.
The others all looked equally puzzled.
Well, of course. Different world, right.
âIn any case, weâll have to investigate a few things,â Dominic said.
Investigate what, exactly?
Maybe my nervousness showed, because Arisa hugged me gently and stroked my head.
âItâs okay. The Guildmasterâs a good person. He always takes time to listen, even to adventurers like us.â
True enough â given his titles, he must be busy, yet heâd cleared time for me, a stranger, in the evening. Definitely the sign of a decent official.
Someone brought us tea â familiar-smelling, too.
They waited for me to calm down and take a sip before continuing. Thankfully, it wasnât scalding hot.
Arisa added honey and milk to hers.
âWant some, Shunsuke? Youâd better â sweets are rare around here!â
Did she forget sheâd just stolen my chamomile candy earlier?
When she tried to add honey to mine too, I waved my hand.
âThanks, but Iâm fine.â
Dominic gave quiet instructions to the woman whoâd served the tea. She fetched something from a cabinet â it looked like a portable induction heater, with glowing colored stones embedded around it.
âAll right, Iâll need everyone else to step out for a moment.â
âOh, right. Come on, Arisaâ wait, Shunsuke?â
As Urisa started to rise, I instinctively grabbed the hem of his vest.
âU-umâŚâ
He turned to me, patting my head gently.
âDonât worry. Theyâre just going to scan your personal data with this measuring magic tool. It doesnât hurt at all.
We all used it when registering as adventurers.
But since youâre an unregistered child, it might show information that strangers shouldnât see â so weâre supposed to leave. You understand what âpersonal informationâ means, right?
See? Even the secretary left the room.â
âI know, but⌠Iâd rather you stayed.â
Huh. When did I get this clingy?
Arisa cupped my cheek.
âItâs fine. Weâll be right outside the door.â
Dominic watched our exchange and chuckled.
âWell, all right. I can vouch for their discretion. Let them stay.â
âOkay?â
âSorry for the trouble. Please stay with me.â
The siblings smiled and sat back down.
âThen letâs begin. Place your palm here.â
âYes.â
The moment I did, a glowing screen floated up above the device â like Momâs old waist pouch checklist, but visible to everyone.
âStatus open,â said a voice from the device.
ăTanaka Shunsukeă appeared at the top â my real name! But the rest was written in strange symbols I couldnât read.
Dominic frowned.
ââŚHmm.â
âThe first four characters are his name?â Urisa asked.
âYes â it reads Tanaka Shunsuke. âTanakaâ is my family name, and âShunsukeâ my given name.
But I canât read the rest at all.â
âKids not knowing how to read isnât weird, you know? We canât even read the first four characters,â Arisa said, patting my head.
Hey, I can read â Iâm seventeen inside! Japanese, at least. English is iffy.
âYou only learned to read when you were almost grown,â Urisa teased.
âHey! Readingâs plenty for an adventurer! Gorda can barely write his own name â and itâs illegible!â
âYeah, he could only recognize food names. Priorities, I guess.â
So Gordaâs that kind of guy. Still, no need to mock someone who struggles to learn.
As I kept my hand on the device, new characters appeared â Japanese this time, overlapping the foreign text.
âHuh? I can read this nowâŚ?â
Dominic whispered so only I could hear:
âThe measurement must have stimulated a latent skill. It happens sometimes when someone first touches a high-magic artifact.â
He cleared his throat to quiet the siblings.
âShunsuke appears to have another name â Schweitz. Thereâs also a family name, but⌠best we leave that undisclosed for now.â
Wait, what? Schweitz? Do I have some noble lineage or something?
âHe also has magical attributes, decent stats, and several useful skills. Considerable potential for growth.â
âWhoa, Shunsuke, you can use magic?â
âNo, never tried.â
âThen you should learn at a proper place â a guild or academy. Magic can be dangerous. Still, few can use it, so itâll be a big help once you master it,â Urisa said.
âBut we canât issue an ID as things are,â Dominic murmured, stroking his chin beard â a style like an Americanâs sideburn-beard combo.
Arisa kept fussing with my hair and cheeks; it tickled.
âKeep your hand there,â Dominic said, tapping the screen with a pen-like tool before writing a line of text.
âThere. That should do.â
A mechanical sound came from his desk.
Ka-sha sha, beep!
âYou have a magic tool for ID printing too?â Arisa asked.
âYes. This is the master unit; the ones downstairs are subterminals. Some functions only this one can perform.â
So they trusted these siblings enough to talk about internal guild systems â impressive.
âNow, lift your hand.
Shunsuke â continue using that name.
Your true name and family name will remain sealed under my authority, especially within this kingdom.
If, after learning more and growing up, or if you travel abroad, send a letter addressed to âDominic von Margan of Polygon.â
Include nothing else but the phrase: âRequesting release.ââ
âI understand.â
âAlsoâŚâ Dominic went to his desk, rummaged through drawers, and returned with something â a dog tag like Arisaâs, and a small round stone with a cord attached. It resembled my momâs magatama charm, though its color was like black onyx.
âHold this stone in your hand.â
When I didâ
âAh! Shunsuke, your face!â Arisa gasped, holding up the mirror.
In the reflection was me â Japanese me!
Not the 17-year-old from Christmas Eve, but my much younger self â the kid from my kindergarten yearbook, just with longer hair.
âWhoaâŚâ I couldnât help but exclaim. I looked childish, but oddly at peace.
âKyaa! Shunsuke, youâre adorable with black hair and eyes!â Arisa squealed, hugging me again.
âHereâs the cord â needs to be adjustable for a child,â Dominic said, handing the tag and string to Urisa.
I noticed heâd only been using his left hand this whole time â his right hung limp.
âNow let go of the stone.â
As soon as I did, my appearance returned to the elven one.
Urisa threaded the stone and tag onto the cord, slipped it over my neck, and adjusted the length.
âThis is a transformation magic tool,â Dominic explained. âIt changes an elfâs appearance to that of a human. If a human wears it, nothing happens.â
When the stone touched my chest again, I reverted to human form.
âThis oneâs your ID. Hold it and say âStatus.ââ
âOkay. Statusâ whoa.â
This time I could read everything. Even the stuff in brackets: Schweitz von Lordlanda? What kind of grand name was that? Maybe my momâs grandfatherâs?
ăRace: Humană â and next to it, in blue letters, ăElf?ă
âHuh?â
ăAge: 5ă (actual age: 17)
Then stats for Level, Vitality, Stamina, Magic Powerâ
Nice, I do have magic.
Basic Magic Attributes: All
Special Magic Attributes: All
Skills: Spatial Magic, Alchemy, Appraisal
Other Skills: Arithmetic, Swordsmanship, Archery, Cooking, Sewing, Healing, Music
Didnât Dominic say he was hiding stuff?
âWhen you view your own status, everything appears â see the two colors?â
âYes. White and blue text.â
âWe can only see the white parts, and fewer words,â Arisa said.
âThe blue text is what I concealed. Only I can unseal it, but since my name is at the end, it still functions as an official ID,â Dominic explained.
Indeed, the last line read:
ăI, Dominic von Margan, take responsibility for this individualâs details.ă
He was really going above and beyond for a kid heâd just met. What if I turned out to be evil?
He smiled knowingly.
âMy job requires me to see a personâs true nature. Donât worry. Just stay healthy, and use your skills wisely. Study hard and grow strong.
Though⌠itâll take you roughly three times longer to reach adulthood.â
He placed his large hand gently on my now-black hair.
As he did, a screen popped up beside his face â displaying his data. Age and all.
When I gasped, he pressed a finger to his lips with a secretive smile.
Right. So this was the âAppraisalâ skill.
âThank you,â I said quietly.
âDiscuss the rest with Urisa and Arisa.
You two plan to stay in this area for a while?â
âYeah. The countryâs still a bit unstable after the war, but this townâs far from the old front lines, so itâs safe enough. Oh, sorry, Guildmasterââ
âNo need. I may hold a noble title, but Iâm the youngest son of a fourth son â practically a commoner. Iâm farther from the royal court than a rich merchant.â
What a humble guy.
âBut youâre still said to be the busiest in House Margan,â Arisa noted.
He smiled. âTrue. The truly high nobles donât work at all â they just dump it on their subordinates.â
A noble who could joke like that â definitely a peopleâs man.
âShunsuke,â he said, turning serious, âwhile youâre in this country, stay in your human form.
There are a few beastfolk here in Polygon, but thatâs only because I use what little influence I have to protect them. This is the farthest frontier, after all.
But this kingdom still holds a strong human-supremacist mindset. Itâs better than it used to be, yet nonhumans still face restrictions and discrimination.
As for elves⌠letâs just say itâs safer not to show that side of yourself.
Stay human, for your own protection.â
His eyes met mine.
Honestly, I barely understood. Iâd just been a normal Japanese human until recently â not an elf. But I guess Iâd have to learn about this world, little by little.
âYes,â I answered softly, though confusion clouded my chest.
If this wasnât a dream, what would become of me? My eyes stung.
Arisa hugged me again, pressing my face against her chest. The steady beat of her heart calmed me.
Dominic tapped his desk lightly with his left fist.
âAll right, letâs wrap up for now. What are your plans for tonight?â
âShunsuke, come stay with us. Itâs a shabby apartment, but we have a spare bed.â
âAre you sure?â
âOf course! Right, brother?â
âYeah. Donât be shy.â
They really were kind. It made me happy.
âThen, Shunsuke, come back here tomorrow afternoon,â Dominic said, patting my head.
âI will.â
âLetâs go,â Arisa said, pulling me up.
We left the guild, hand in hand.
Outside, night had fully fallen. Unlike Tokyo, there were no streetlights â only the warm glow from windows and a half-moon patterned with unfamiliar markings.
Yet strangely, I could still see the road clearly. Maybe my eyesight had improved.
As Arisa led me through the quiet streets of Polygon, I thought vaguely â
âŚI might actually see better now than I did as a kid.
