Chapter 51

 “The Shadow Faction”

(Conspiracy and Schemes in the Royal Capital, Part II)

The morning meeting bell rang three low tones.
A chill breeze slipped through the long hallway of the staff building, casting white ribbons of light across the polished floorboards.
From beyond the door came the faint sounds of rustling paper and the scent of steaming tea.

“Good morning, Professor Kai.”
A young clerk seated at the reception desk smiled and bowed.
Behind that smile, something faint and hard to read flickered.
(A fine smile — but it’s got a chill about half a degree too low.)

◆◇◆

Inside the Faculty Council Room.

A dozen or so teachers sat around a half-circle table.
The window was only half open; outside, the wind stirred the treetops, but the air inside remained heavy.

“Let’s begin the agenda,” said the chairman — an elderly instructor — clearing his throat.
“From this summer onward, there has been concern about excessive external influence. We must determine the Academy’s official stance on this matter.”

The formal phrasing ricocheted across the table.
Several glances slid toward Kai.

“To be specific,” one teacher said, “I refer to the recent popularity in the capital of that ‘Cross-grill’ food stall phenomenon.”
“Food’s not a problem, is it?” Kai muttered.
“It’s symbolic,” another teacher corrected, adjusting his spectacles.

“Moreover, your involvement in civil engineering and agriculture within the Duke’s domain has drawn attention.
As achievements of an Academy professor, they are admirable — but there are concerns about possible political exploitation.”

(Ain’t no plans to ‘exploit’ anything…)
Kai rolled a piece of chalk between his fingers.
Its cold dust clung to his nails — the only thing that still felt sane in this room.

“Professor Kai,” the Headmaster said quietly.
Deep lines furrowed his brow, yet his tone remained calm.

“Your lectures are the pride of the Academy. But beyond these walls, you have begun to turn into a story.
And there are forces who dislike that. I just want you to be aware.”

“Yes,” Kai answered simply.
(I’ve always been aware. But that don’t mean I’ll start bending my lessons.)

“Next item,” the Headmaster continued.
“The Royal Capital’s Education Inspector will visit next week — a delegation from the Ministry of Magic.
They’ve requested to observe Professor Kai’s lectures in particular.”

A murmur rippled around the table.
“An inspector?”
“At this time of year?”
“How unusual.”

Unusual, yes — but not coincidence.
Someone was shaping the wind.

When the meeting dissolved, Kai stepped into the corridor.
Pale amber light cut diagonal stripes across the wall.

◆◇◆

“Kai!”

A flash of red ribbon swung out from behind a doorway.
It was Rutia.
Her golden hair, tied near the shoulders, caught the light as she moved.

“The council’s over?”
“Yeah. The wind’s blowin’ a bad way.”
“Then I’ll just become the wind myself,” she said lightly — the kind of calm threat only she could make.
There was no hesitation in those blue eyes.

“The inspector’s coming. My class is the target.”
“Then let’s make it the best target possible.
Nothing frustrates a hunter more than prey they can’t hit.”

Kai couldn’t help but laugh.
(That’s a swordswoman’s way of thinkin’.)

“By the way, dear husband—”
“Your brakes on that nickname still busted, huh?”
“Today it’s just water,” she said innocently. “No sleeping potion this time.”

She handed him a flask — cool to the touch, pleasant against his fingertips.
The clear water slid down his throat, and the stone lodged in his chest grew a little smaller.

◆◇◆

The lecture began as scheduled.

At the blackboard, Kai drew circles and connected them with straight lines.
“Today’s topic: Margin of Error and Safety Range. Magic is never perfect.
That’s why you measure your margins — make a frame that keeps the explosion from happenin’.
Same as life.”

“Professor, what if the error gets too big?” a student asked.
“Then you measure again. If you’re scared, stop for a while.
When you stop, let someone else look.
No one’s so smart they can stay accurate all on their own.”

The air in the classroom slowly settled into harmony.
The creak of chairs, the scratch of pens, a soft exhale somewhere —
each small sound stitched itself into a single fabric called learning.

(Yeah. This is it. This is why I’m here.)

◆◇◆

During break, a new envelope sat atop the lectern.
This time, the wax seal was silver and heavy, the crest ancient —
one of the old noble families from the northern quarter of the capital.

Inside, a graceful hand had written:

“Professor Kai,
In accompaniment with the Education Inspector’s visit,
a representative of our House will call upon you.
We are most intrigued by how an ‘Outsider’s learning’ might serve the future of our kingdom.”

(Starts with ‘Professor Kai,’ ends by stabbing me with ‘Outsider.’)
(Sweet words with a whip in the tail.)

◆◇◆

Afternoon.

Crossing the courtyard, Kai saw a man sitting on the fountain’s edge —
wearing a gray-green coat and a plain mask.
He gazed at the water’s surface, expression unreadable.

“Good day, Professor Kai,” the man said without turning.
“From the northern quarter of the capital… no, names are unimportant. I only wish to talk.”

“I’ve got class soon, so make it quick.”

The man raised one hand, slicing the air lightly.
“The balance between the ducal house and the royal family rests on a fragile scale.
An Outsider has stepped onto that scale.
If the weight tips, the sand will flow.
…You understand, don’t you, Kai Cross?”

He spoke the name coldly.
Even the sound of the fountain seemed to fade.

“Can’t say I do,” Kai replied.
“But if you’re here to flip over my blackboard mid-lesson, you’re in the wrong classroom.”

The man laughed — a sound without a face.
“Be at ease. I mind my manners.
This is only advice: what you write on that blackboard could shift the capital’s balance.
If you wish to avoid that, perhaps you could round your equations a little.”

“If rounding errors are what’s holdin’ up the kingdom,” Kai said dryly, “then it’s been crooked from the start.”
He shrugged. “The blackboard doesn’t lie. I don’t want to lie to it either.”

The man stood.
Wind tugged at the strings of his mask.

“Then we shall see which is heavier — the teacher’s truth or the kingdom’s scale.”

His footsteps were light, fading away like sand slipping through fingers.

“Kai!”

Rutia came running from across the fountain.
Her skirt hem caught the sunlight; her toes struck a white stone with a faint tap.

“Who were you talking to?”
“Someone with a thin face.”
“A mask?”
“Yeah, something like that.”

Rutia’s eyes narrowed.
“Kai, I’ll come pick you up this evening. Don’t go home alone.”
“You’re treatin’ me like a kid.”
“I’m treating you like someone important.”

She stepped closer, lowering her voice to a whisper.

My dear husband.

The heat hidden in that single phrase was like the warmth of a blade —
steady, sharp, and just a little frightening.
