Chapter 48Ā
Ā āAfter the Celebrationā
(Kai and Rutiaās Summer Vacation Arc XVII)
The grand ballroom was slowly winding down. Laughter still echoed across the hall, and the clinking of wine glasses filled the air.
Yet the earlier engagement announcements and Rutiaās bold declaration still lingered in everyoneās minds. The noblesā conversations were now entirely about the two newly formed couples.
āHis Highness and Lady Filia⦠such a beautiful match.ā
āLady Rutia and Master Kai looked surprisingly natural together.ā
āThe kingdomās future seems secure now.ā
Hearing such words behind him, Kai escaped to a quiet corner of the hall and sipped his wine.
āMan, there was no way to run from that atmosphere⦠My opinion didnāt matter one bit, huh,ā
he muttered softly. But deep inside, he couldnāt deny that there was a faint warmth in his chest.
āMy dear husband, here you are.ā
Turning around, he saw Rutia approaching, the crimson hem of her dress swaying elegantly.
Her eyes were tinged with pink, and her expression ā usually so proud and composed ā carried a shy, girlish smile.
āY-young lady⦠after droppinā that bomb in front of everyone, you still got the nerve to smile like that?ā
āWhy not? Iām happy.ā
āDonāt say āhappyā like that⦠My heartās still racinā, ya know.ā
Ignoring his complaint, Rutia gracefully sat beside him and, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, entwined her arm around his.
āIt felt wonderful to declare it before everyone. Now, no one can deny the bond between you and me.ā
āYeah, well⦠the one wantinā to deny it right now is meā¦ā
āHehe. My dear husband, are you still resisting?ā
āāCause really, Iām just a teacher, yāknow? Aināt got the class to stand beside a dukeās daughter.ā
āThen I shall vouch for your worth. ā Because Iām the one who chose you.ā
Her earnest gaze left Kai speechless.
Just then, a calm voice reached them.
āYou two seem to be enjoying yourselves.ā
It was Leon and Filia. Leon wore a gentle smile, and Filia stood beside him, shy but proud.
āY-your Highnessā¦ā
Kai tried to stand, but Rutia held his arm tightly, keeping him seated.
āNo need for formalities,ā Leon said softly. āLet me thank you properly, Kai.ā
āIf not for your guidance ā in sword, in magic, and in heart ā I would never have come this far. Itās because of you that I can now stand beside Filia like this.ā
āYour Highnessā¦ā
āYou celebrated my engagement, and now my dear sister Rutiaās as well. I trust her judgment ā and the man she has chosen.ā
Leon extended his hand. After a momentās hesitation, Kai firmly grasped it.
Filia smiled warmly.
āTeacher, I wish to thank you as well. I used to be someone who only waited to be protected⦠But now, I can stand beside His Highness. Thatās all thanks to what you taught me.ā
āNah, I just taught you a bit oā arithmetic.ā
āThat ābitā was the first step toward everything I am now.ā
Her clear gaze made Kai scratch his head awkwardly.
āMan⦠still aināt used to beinā praised by my students.ā
Rutia puffed her chest proudly.
āYou see? Even His Highness and Lady Filia recognize your worth. Thereās no escape for you now.ā
āDonāt say it like that! I aināt a fugitive!ā
Their banter made Leon and Filia laugh softly.
Soon after, the midnight bells tolled, marking the end of the celebration.
Guests began to leave in groups, and quiet gradually returned to the grand hall.
Kai exhaled deeply and drained the rest of his wine.
(What a night⦠full oā chaos, but I guess it all worked out in the end.)
Howeverā
In a shadowed corner of the hall, a few masked men watched intently.
āAn outsider, standing at the kingdomās center⦠how disgraceful.ā
āThe next move belongs to us.ā
Their low whispers never reached Kaiās ears.
Outside, the night sky stretched wide, glittering with stars.
Under the moonlight, Rutia leaned gently against Kaiās shoulder.
āMy dear husband⦠tonight truly made me happy.ā
āMy stomach still hurts from the stressā¦ā
āHehe. Thatās exactly why I love you.ā
Her words left Kai staring helplessly at the sky once again.
(Aw, hell⦠Maybe this time, there really aināt no escapinā itā¦)
