Chapter 43Â
âThe Ball and the Okonomiyaki Incidentâ
(Kai and Rutiaâs Summer Vacation, Part XII)
One late-summer afternoon, a glittering envelope arrived at the Dukeâs mansion.
The golden wax seal bore the unmistakable crest of the royal capital.
âA⌠ball?â
Rutia opened the letter and raised an eyebrow.
âIndeed. A royal ballroom gathering hosted by the palace. And here it saysââAttendance required, accompanied by Mr. Kai Cross.ââ
âHUH!? Why me!?â
Kaiâs voice exploded through the hall.
Rutia merely shrugged with a serene smile.
âIsnât it obvious? Youâre the hero who saved our lands this summer. And, of course, my dear husband.â
âStop callinâ me that! And I ainât no hero either!â
âWell, since the invitation is official, we have no choice. Now then, my husbandâletâs go to the capital.â
âQuit the âwife modeâ alreadyyy!â
âââ
A few days later, the two arrived in the royal capital.
Wide stone-paved streets stretched before them, lined with luxury boutiques and jewelry shops, bustling with carriages and well-dressed people.
Many turned their heads at the sight of Rutiaâs stunning beautyâand then, with curiosity, at the common-looking man beside her.
âUgh⌠I feel like I donât belong here at all.â
âYouâll be fine, Kai. Or ratherâdear husband?â
âYou said it twice! The second one was definitely on purpose!â
Their first stop was a tailorâs shop.
Inside the grand boutique filled floor-to-ceiling with fine fabrics, an elderly tailor squinted at Kai as soon as he saw him.
âHoho⌠your physique isnât bad. But wearing clothes that donât fitânow thatâs a crime.â
âA crime!? That harsh?â
As measurements began, Rutia stood nearby, grinning playfully.
âHehe⌠Kai, are you nervous?â
ââCourse I am! Iâm standinâ still like a statue while this guy keeps sayinâ âDonât moveâ!â
After a few minutes, the tailor declared firmly,
âWe shall craft a proper tailcoat for the royal ball. It will suit you well.â
âItâll look wonderful on you, my husband.â
âThere she goes again!â
The suit would be ready in a few days.
On the way back, Kai and Rutia wandered into the lower town of the capital.
A savory aroma drifted through the air.
âOh⌠whatâs that smell?â
Kaiâs nose twitched.
From a small food stall, something was sizzling on a griddleâ
a batter spread flat, mixed with ingredients, and cooked until golden.
âH-hey, miss⌠that looks exactly like okonomiyaki!â
âOkoâŚnomiyaki?â
Kai hurried over, full of excitement.
âHey, mister! One of those, please!â
He took a bite of the freshly cooked dish.
Crispy outside, fluffy insideâ
but⌠no sauce, no cabbage. Something was missing.
âSo close! This could be perfect ifâwait, old man, lemme fix this up for ya!â
âF-Fix it!?â The stall owner blinked, confused.
Kai rolled up his sleeves and stood at the griddle.
âLeave it to me! This kinda thingâthis is the soul of Osaka!â
Using his own spices and the ingredients on hand, he mixed up a new version.
Batter with chopped veggies, slices of meat, both sides grilled perfectlyâ
and at last, brushed with a sweet-savory glaze.
âThere we go! Now this is real okonomiyaki!â
Rutia took a curious biteâ
and froze, eyes wide.
âW-what is thisâŚ!?â
Her cheeks flushed, eyes sparkling as she devoured it.
âItâs crisp on the outside, soft within⌠and this sweet, rich sauce! My husbandâthis is a culinary revolution!â
âRevolutionâs a bit much! And quit callinâ me that while youâre eatinâ!â
Soon the smell drew a crowd.
âDelicious!â
âA whole new flavor!â
âGive me one too!â
The stall owner panicked as people swarmed around.
âMaster Kai! Please teach me how to make this!â
In the end, Kai had to explain the recipe right there.
âMix flour and water till itâs gooey, add chopped veggies ân meat, grill both sides, then finish with a sweet-savory sauce!â
âSauce? We donât have that!â
âThen simmer fruit wine with soy pasteâgives ya sweetness and tang. Trust me!â
The vendor tried itâand sure enough, it turned out delicious.
The crowd erupted in cheers.
âMaster Kai! Letâs call it Cross-yaki!â
âDonât rename it! Itâs okonomiyaki!â
That night, everyone in the capital was eating Kaiâs creation.
By the next day, other stalls were already copying the recipe.
âItâs already spread⌠dang it!â
Kai groaned, holding his head.
Rutia simply laughed and slipped her arm through his.
âHehe, my dear husband has created a new specialty of the royal capital.â
âIt spread on its own!â
âNo, Kai. With you here, this world becomes a little more fun.â
As they walked through the glowing streetsâbuzzing like fireworks themselvesâ
Kai let out a long sigh.
(Man⌠am I really still just a teacher? What am I doinâ, spreadinâ Osaka street food across another world?)
But when he looked at Rutia smiling contentedly beside him,
he couldnât bring himself to say those words aloud.
