Chapter 24
 âThe War Ridge FestivalâDisqualified!?â
ăAcademy Events Arc: War Ridge Festival ă
The chill of autumn wind swept across the academy courtyard.
On the bulletin board, a large paper framed in gold trim had been posted:
ăRoyal Roselia Academy â War Ridge Festival Announcementă
It was the academyâs grand annual eventâa festival where students competed in both swordsmanship and magic.
In other words, their own version of the Olympics.
Excited students crowded around the notice board, shouting and cheeringâor screamingâin every direction.
âKai! Kai! Did you see it? The War Ridge Festival!â
Bursting into the morning classroom was Luthia, her luxurious red ribbon bouncing as she puffed out her chest, eyes sparkling.
âOf course, Iâll be the representative for the Magic Division, right?â
âWhoa, hold up. You donât get to decide that all by yourself.â
âBut itâs obvious, isnât it? Who else but meââ
âI want to try it too!â
âM-me too! I want to participate!â
âPlease recommend me, teacher!â
Hands shot up one after another.
Even students who used to struggle to cast the simplest spell were now filled with confidence.
Voices of hope filled the classroom, and Kai scratched his head.
ââŚThis makes me proud as a teacher.â
(Though, I canât shake this bad feeling somehowâŚ)
That afternoon, the selection trials for the Magic Division were held in the schoolyard.
Rows of targets were set up, and students from other classes had gathered to watch.
The air was thick with anticipation and tension as Kai stepped forward.
âAlright then, letâs see your best spell one by one.â
âYes, sir! ăFireballă!â
BOOM!
The launched fireball obliterated the targetâand left black smoke rising from the stone wall behind it.
âHey hey, thatâs not a beginner spell, is it!?â
âT-the rock⌠it evaporatedâŚâ
Murmurs spread through the onlookers.
âNext! ăIce Lance Barrageă!â
SH-SH-SH-SH!
A rain of sharp ice spears tore through the air, reducing the target to splinters.
âWh-what the heck was thatâŚâ
âThatâs military-level magicâŚâ
Then another student unleashed ăLightning Chaină.
Crackling bolts scorched a steel dummy black.
The crowd screamed and backed away to the edge of the field.
Finally, Luthia stepped forward.
âWatch closely! ăStellar Explosion Arrayă!â
A magic sigil of light appeared in the skyâthen brilliant rays rained down, erasing the targets in a blinding explosion.
A thunderous roar, clouds of dust, blinding flashesâhalf the training ground was now a wasteland.
âM-miss! You overdid it!â
âObviously! You need this much power to be a proper representative!â
Her classmates cheered wildly, while the other classes were already waving white flags.
That evening.
Kai was summoned to the Headmasterâs office.
âKai-senseiâŚâ
âWhatâs wrong, Headmaster? Youâre frowning so hard your face looks like wrinkled wallpaper.â
ââŚYour class is banned from entering the Magic Division.â
ââŚHuh?â
The headmaster slammed his desk.
âComplaints are flooding in from the other classes! âThereâs no way we can fight against that!â they say!â
âEhhâŚâ
âSome even said, âIf Class Cross participates, weâll withdraw entirely!ââ
Kai buried his face in his hands.
âMy poor kids worked so hard for thisâŚâ
âI know. But if they participate, the whole festival will collapse. The decision is final.â
After school, in the classroom.
When Kai broke the news, a heavy silence fell.
ââŚNo wayâŚâ
âThatâs unfair! Just because the other classes are weak!â
âWe finally learned how to use magic properly!â
Frustration erupted across the room.
Luthia slammed her chair back and stood up.
âThen weâll just win in the Swordsmanship Division instead! Weâll show them our strength!â
âM-miss, are you even good with a sword?â
âEh? Um⌠I can stab⌠probably?â
âProbably!?â
Laughter broke out, easing the tension a little.
âAlright then, weâll focus on the Sword Division! They banned us from magic, but not from swords.â
Kai clapped his hands, scanning the studentsâ faces.
âBut, teacher, Iâve never even held a sword beforeâŚâ
âNo problem! Swordsmanship is all about patterns and angles. Itâs basically trigonometry.â
âTrigonometry!? What does that have to do with swords!?â
âEverything! The optimal thrusting angle is 30 degreesâhistory proves it!â
âWhat kind of history is that!?â
Laughter spread again, and the light returned to the studentsâ faces.
And soâ
Class Cross decided to enter the Swordsmanship Division.
But no one yet knew that their âabnormal strengthâ would shine just as brightly there tooâŚ
