Chapter 12
The Night of the Assault, the Proud Lady and the Teacherâs Shield
That night, the skies over the Royal Academy of Magic in Roselia were covered with clouds.
The wind, usually calm, let out an eerie howl.
Sensing the disturbance, the academyâs protective barrier gave off a faint creak.
ââŚSo, theyâve come.â
From the window of his temporary residence, granted by the Ministry of Magic, Remio El=Hauseâan envoy from the Wind Nation of Elstraâlooked coldly up at the sky.
Standing beside him was a masked woman dressed in black.
âThe target is non-combat. With most students back in the dorms, now is the perfect time.â
âMake sure you finish the job. Eliminationâthis wonât end peacefully.â
Their goal was the sealing of Kai Crossâs knowledge.
His existence had been deemed a political threat that could destabilize the magical order of their neighboring nation.
âââ
2 a.m.
The teachersâ dormitory was silentâno footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Yet within that silence, something felt wrong.
ââŚHmmm.â
Kai, lying on his bed, crumpled a candy wrapper and tossed it into the trash. Then he listened closely.
(No footsteps at allâthatâs odd. At this hour, a night-duty teacher should be patrolling the halls.)
With a small sigh, he pulled chalk and a small magic slate from his bedside.
ââŚMy bad feelings usually turn out right.â
Moments later, the dormitory hallway was completely sealed off by magic.
A masked woman entered without a sound, opening his door.
But the instant she stepped toward Kaiâs bed, the room inverted.
ââŚ!?â
Gravity flippedâthe ceiling and floor switched places.
Though she lost balance, she quickly regained posture with magic.
âI see⌠a barrier through mathematical interference.â
âThatâs my âGood Morning Trap.â Welcome to my bedroom.â
As her eyes adjusted, she saw Kai sitting casually atop his desk.
ââŚWerenât you asleep?â
âI pretended. Reset the equationâs initial value, so itâd trigger the moment you broke in.â
As she gathered magic to strike again, a torrent of power came crashing through the window.
BOOOOM!
The window shattered in an explosion.
From outside descended a girl wreathed in crimson magicâ
Lutia von Valenstein.
ââŚI made it.â
She landed before Kai, standing firmly against the masked woman.
âMilady⌠Why are you hereâŚ!?â
âBecause I couldnât just leave you alone!â
Her eyes no longer carried fearâthey shone with determination.
âThis man is my teacher, and the one I acknowledge as a man. You wonât lay a hand on him.â
The masked woman raised her hand calmly.
âThen I will eliminate you first.â
A combined spell of lightning and wind shot forth.
Lutia drew her sword.
But this wasnât the elegant bladeplay of a noble lady.
It was a strike born of desperationâto protect someone.
âYou wonât pass here!â
CLAAANG!
Steel clashed with magic, cracks splitting across the floor.
ââŚYour swordplay is clumsy. Full of openings.â
âThen maybe youâll let me go?â
ââŚNegative. The mission continues until elimination is confirmed.â
(Sheâs combat-specialized⌠At this rate, Lutiaâ)
Clicking his tongue, Kai grabbed the chalk from the floor.
âDamn it⌠I ainât cut out for fighting, butâ!â
He scrawled formulas across the floor.
A circle began to spin, the air itself changing soundlessly.
ââr² + nĎ⌠shift the axis by -θâŚâ
â!? That coordinate formulaâ!â
Before the woman could react, Lutia gathered all her magic into a final thrust.
ââŚThis is his place!â
Her strike shattered the womanâs defenses.
Magic destabilizedâthe masked intruderâs body dissolved into nothingness.
ââŚThe Wind Owl withdraws.â
Only her fading voice lingered as she vanished.
Silence returned to the room.
Lutia slumped to the floor, exhausted.
ââŚWhy did you⌠do something so reckless?â
âMe? Iâm a teacher. When a studentâs in danger, itâs my job to stand in front.â
ââŚIdiot.â
She muttered softly, lowering her gaze.
Her cheeks, however, were faintly flushed.
âAnd seriously, why were you almost assaulted in your own room!?â
âEh?â
âWhat would you have done if I hadnât shown up!?â
âW-wellâŚâ
âWhatever. Itâs late. Iâll interrogate you tomorrow.â
With that, Lutia turned toward where the window had once been.
âAhâwait, what about the window?â
She scratched her head once, then with a bright smile said,
âFigure it out. Night!â
And left.
ââŚHow the hell am I supposed to explain thisâŚâ
âââ
The next day.
The âattempted assassination of Kai Crossâ spread through the academy,
and relations with Elstra plunged instantly into crisis.
Yet behind the scenesâ
A letter arrived for Kai.
It was from none other than the one who was supposed to be the true heroine of the gameâ
Filia Estrea.
