Chapter 9Â
“The Empty Seat, the Knightâs Provocation, and the Anomaly in the Magic Circle
Kaiâs lecture was proceeding peacefully, as always.
On the blackboard were the ârotational symmetry equationsâ of magic circles, along with their mathematical simplifications.
The students listened with shining eyes. But among themâ
Rutia von Valenstein was nowhere to be seen.
âŠStrictly speaking, it wasnât that she was absent.
She stood just outside the classroom door, hiding behind a hallway pillar, quietly watching the scene.
(Heâs⊠smiling again.)
On the podium, Kai casually handed out candy while carrying on his lesson at his own pace.
âLook here, you mistook this variable ârâ for magical distance, didnât you? Nope, nope, this is âradius.â The radius of the world.â
(âŠWhat even is that, the radius of the worldâŠ)
Suppressing the urge to retort, Rutia pressed a hand to her chest.
(âŠItâs already over. The contract. The relationship. And yetâŠ)
(Why canât I take my eyes off him?)
âââ
After school.
Kai was in the experiment wing, helping students who had asked for supplementary lessons.
Then he was approached by none other thanâGilbert Volcrane, heir of a noble house, and the ace of the combat-magic knight course.
âSo, you are Kai Cross.â
ââŠWhoa, thatâs a mighty strong-sounding name. What brings you here?â
Gilbert sneered.
âWhen I first heard you were a âteacher,â I thought it was a joke. A commoner lecturing on noble magical theory? Laughable.â
(This is straight out of a clichĂ©âŠ)
Kai rubbed his forehead.
âBeing a commoner has nothing to do with it. Math doesnât have ranks, yâknow?â
âI donât like your insolent toneâŠ!â
The moment Gilbert reached for the sword at his hip,
the air in the room grew taut and tense.
(Ah, yep. This is about to go bad.)
Drawn by the commotion, Rutia happened to pass by.
(âŠSeriously? Heâs gotten dragged into something againâŠ!)
She rushed the door open.
âWhat are you doing, Gilbert!â
âOh, Lady Rutia. We were merely discussing a little âpractice matchâ with the teacher.â
âDonât lie! You were about to draw your sword.â
Kai raised his hand to stop her.
âItâs fine. Stuff like this happens a lot.â
âNo, it doesnât! Teachers donât usually get into âduelsâ with studentsâŠ!â
âWell, Iâm a teacher, but I ainât ânormal.ââ
ââŠHuh?â
ââŠWant me to show you? What it is I actually teach?â
Gilbert took a stance, magic flooding into his sword.
âHere I come, Kai Cross! Take my âLightning Slashâ!â
(Idiot⊠didnât they say not to swing weapons in the halls, itâs against the rulesâŠ)
Kai sighed once.
With chalk, he scrawled a quick equation into a makeshift magic circle on the floor.
ââ3n + Ξ / λ = 0.â
Kyuuuun! The air vibrated.
Just before Gilbertâs sword could strike down,
the gravity beneath his feet inverted.
âWhaâ!?â
His body floated up, lost balance, and toppled.
The magic within his blade shot free, ricocheting upward, sucked into the ceiling.
âWh-what was that just nowâŠ!? Inverse-phase gravityâŠ!? How is that even possible!?â
âThatâs what Iâve been sayinâ. Magic is about structure, not brute force.â
The room fell silent.
Kai set down the chalk.
âThis is the way of a âmath teacher.ââ
Gilbert couldnât speak, lying on the floor, staring up at the ceiling.
Beside him, Rutia muttered softly:
ââŠReally. You⊠I just donât get you.â
âââ
That night.
Rutia sat alone in her room, gazing out the window.
(Again⊠I couldnât take my eyes off him.)
(The contract ended. I was supposed to keep my distance. It was what I wantedâŠ)
(So why, after seeing that⊠is my heart racing again?)
She gently pressed her chest.
But the heartbeat refused to calm down.
Meanwhile, in his own quarters in the teachersâ dormitory, Kai stared at his candy jar with a heavy sigh.
ââŠIâve gone and done it again. I really donât need that kind of troubleâŠâ
(But that girlâŠ)
He recalled Rutiaâs serious gaze during the commotion.
(Even during the contract, I never saw her look at me like thatâŠ)
Kaiâs hand slowly touched the jar.
(âŠIt shouldâve been over. And yet⊠why?)
âââ
The next morning.
Several cloaked figures appeared at the academyâs main gate.
On their chests gleamed the insignia of the Ministry of Magic.
âFor the teacher Kai Cross, summoned from another world and hired under special exceptionâwe are here to conduct an official âinvestigation.ââ
The story, now tinged with the scent of war, was about to enter a new stage.
