The uncle didnāt make things difficult for me. Instead, he directly handed me the key, and I looked at him with grateful eyes.
Turning my head to look at the secluded road, there were very few pedestrians, and only a handful of cars passed by. The cold wind brushed against my cheeks, making me feel a chill.
Itās getting coldā¦
Looking at the unpleasant weather, I realized that the days of changing seasons were approaching, and I needed to add a few more layers of clothing. But my pockets were completely empty now. I lived from one half-full meal to the next, and life was truly difficult.
The heavens were uncooperative. A few muffled thunderclaps sounded in the sky. I lifted my head to look at the dark clouds gathering, worry rising in my heartāI hadnāt brought an umbrella.
There was no other choice. I could only run back first. If I didnāt hurry, once the rain started falling, Iād be soaked through. I had just moved, and there werenāt many clothes at home to change into.
While I was lost in thought, raindrops had already splashed onto my feet.
I frowned and quickened my pace, thinking of getting home before the rain grew heavier.
The rain poured down like it was being dumped from buckets, mercilessly scattering from the sky. In less than a few minutes, the ground was already soaked, and I truly became a drowned rat.
My wet hair stuck to my face, my entire body was drenched, and my clothes clung tightly to me, making me extremely uncomfortable.
Like a soaked stray dog, I, a so-called ābig sisterā in the eyes of passersby, walked down the street. Seeing the strange looks from others, I couldnāt help but mock myself inwardly.
Meng Yanshuang, oh Meng Yanshuang, you really are pitiful.
With a sneer in my heart, I hugged my arms around myself, trying my best to avoid the heavy rain. My mind couldnāt help but recall how Yu Jin used to hold an umbrella for me on rainy days, how he would put my handsāhands that were naturally prone to getting coldāinto his arms when I felt chilled, how he would send me clothes before the seasons even changed. Back then, his smile was like the sun. Back then, Yu Jin was precisely like this, little by little breaking through the defenses of my heartā¦
Who told you to be fooled by his sugar-coated bullets? You really were that easy to pleaseā¦
The rain blurred my vision. My nose stung, and tears mixed with the rain slid down my cheeks. In a daze, I saw a convenience store that was open.
I carefully went inside and stood trembling in the corner near the entrance.
I was afraid the convenience store owner would chase me out, so I didnāt dare move further inside. Yet raindrops still occasionally splashed onto my face.
The owner must have noticed me. I saw her take something out of a drawer and walk toward me. The rain blurred my sight, and I couldnāt tell what was in her hand. I became even more frightened.
āMiss, are you alright? Here, wipe yourself.ā A gentle female voice came from in front of me, bringing me a trace of warmth amid the cold rain.
I took the item from her hand and realized it was a towel. As I wiped myself, I gradually saw her face clearly.
It was a gentle, reserved face. She gave me a slight smile, and I couldnāt help but feel moved. In this cold world, there truly arenāt many people who would treat a stranger like this.
She pulled me further into her shop. āMiss, you didnāt bring an umbrella, did you? Stay here with me for now to avoid the rain. You can leave once it stops.ā
āOkay.ā I nodded in agreement. I had no reason to refuse her. This was probably the first warmth Iād felt in a long, long time.
The shop owner sorted through the account books. Because of the rain, there werenāt many customers coming in. But the number of people inside never increased either.
There was only me.
After a long while, the rain still hadnāt let up.
The shop owner was more or less done with her work. She sat down beside me, and we started chatting.
āWhatās wrong? Getting soaked in the rain all by yourself. I have extra umbrellas here. Why donāt you take one? You can return it tomorrow,ā the shop owner said, handing me a pack of biscuits.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I took out money to pay, but she refused.
āWhy is that? Was your previous job not suitable?ā the shop owner asked with a faint smile as she talked with me.
