Chapter 20Â
A small smile appeared on Killianâs face as he read the letter carried by the bird.
âLady Rianaâdo you mean the lady from Belcape? Oh no! That kind and sweet woman got hurt? We at the Malreff Trading Company will use every means to help!â
Killian wiped away a soft chuckle with the back of his hand.
âSheâs nothing like her father.â
He sent the crow off without replying, and just as he was about to put the letter away, a certain word in Ivan Malreffâs messy handwriting caught his eye:
âLady Riana⌠that Belcape ladyâŚâ
The writing looked darker and thicker there, as if it glowed or had been emphasized.
âWhat theâŚ?â
For a moment, Killian felt a strange chill, but then he leaned back, relaxed.
âItâs just a mistake with the ink.â
It turned out to be Ivanâs poor writing skillsâhe had simply written that part thicker by accident. Still, the name âRianaâ clung to Killianâs thoughts.
He tapped the corner of the letter with his fingers, his lips twisting slightly.
âSheâs always been a bit bothersome.â
The name âRianaâ kept bringing back moments with herâher handshake when they first met, the teardrop rolling down her cheek in the dungeon.
As these memories passed through his mind, he absentmindedly kept tapping the paper until it got crumpled.
Only then did his eyes move to the brass clock on the wall.
The hour hand was pointing to â2.â
ââŚUnbelievable.â
Killian leaned back and closed his eyes for just a moment.

By morning, members of the Magic Association had arrived at the Dukeâs estate. Riana went to watch them, curious.
âThey didnât even glance at me⌠So Killian really didnât say a word about me, huh?â
She wondered if she was just imagining the way some of the desert merchants gave her wistful looks on their way out.
Whooshâwhooshâ
The drugged beasts, asleep from the tranquilizer, made deep breathing sounds. They were loaded into huge cages covered with black cloth.
Crowds had gathered to watch, so Riana knew it wouldnât be long before gossip about the event spread across the kingdom.
âBy tomorrow, the whole country will be buzzingâŚâ
But she was wrongâit started even faster, by lunchtime.
âA grand party by the Droche family, bringing tears to those who werenât invited! A third guest slipped inâwas it a desert mining lord or a smuggler? Could the Dukeâs next product be black-market goods?â
Clever phrasing, anonymous mockeryâit was the work of ForceBuzz.
âAre you kidding me?!â
Riana tossed the gossip magazine she borrowed from Mrs. Baker.
The cook, even while preparing lunch, agreed with her.
âExactly! It doesnât make sense, right?â
âNo kidding. My fart makes more sense than this article!â
âJust donât do it in my kitchen.â
Sitting on the counter, Riana huffed.
âCan they really write stuff like this before anything is confirmed? Donât they have defamation laws here? ForceBuzz should be the one under investigation!â
She had a bad feeling about them from the start!
But then Mrs. Baker raised an eyebrow and asked something unexpected.
âWhy are you getting so mad? Whatâs it got to do with you?â
âWhat do you mean? It has everything to do with me!â
There were a few reasons why this scandal surrounding Droche startedâand Riana was involved in all of them.
First:
âIâm the one who tattled to Killian when I couldâve just walked away.â
She needed a solid excuse for disappearing during the ball.
Second:
âKillian also couldâve covered it up but didnâtâprobably because of the bet involving me.â
She didnât have proof, but considering how flirtatious he was in the middle of all that chaos, it seemed likely.
Third:
âIâm the one who first introduced the word ForceBuzz to this world.â
So in a way, she mightâve even created ForceBuzz itself.
âNow it feels like Iâm the one causing trouble!â
But she couldnât admit all that in front of Mrs. Baker. Officially, she wasnât involved.
âSo, whatâs it got to do with you again?â the cook pressed.
Riana puffed up proudly.
âIâm an employee! Of course I care about my employerâs well-being! Itâs only right that I hope for the best for the person who pays me!â
Mrs. Baker didnât look convinced. Narrowing her eyes, she held up a ladle.
âYou sure itâs not because youâve got a crush on the Duke?â
âWhaaat?!â
Riana jumped off the counter like sheâd heard the most ridiculous thing ever.
âThatâs a seriously insulting accusation!â
âTch. Just saying. All the maids who worked in the Isolation Tower fell for him eventually.â
âWell, I wonât! Ever!â
âYou so sure?â
Riana pushed the ladle away with a finger and said coolly:
âHeâs not my type. Not even close.â
Other womenâs men were not her styleâeven if everything else about him was.
She licked some soup off her finger.
âMmm. Tastes great. Is it potato soup?â
Mrs. Baker still looked suspicious but didnât push further.
âWell⌠Iâm worried too, honestly. This case is about human experimentation.â
âYeah, Iâve heard itâs pretty serious. Could he get hit with a huge fine or something?â
Riana mumbled the rest, guilty at the thought that someone might suffer financially because of her.
But Mrs. Bakerâs eyes widened in shock.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âWhat? Oh⌠maybe he wonât get punished too hard because heâs a Duke?â
âYou really donât get it, huh? If itâs about human experiments, everyone involvedâhelpers, people who looked the other way, even the test subjectsâare all eligible for execution. No exceptions. Not even royalty.â
Rianaâs heart dropped.
âWait⌠Itâs that serious?!â
Killian was probably safe since he truly wasnât involved.
âBut if that guy I met in the dungeon gets exposed as a test subjectâŚâ
He could end up straight on the execution block.
A short and stocky investigator from the Magic Association stroked his mustache as he toured the prison. The beasts were already sent off for disposal. The criminals were temporarily held here.
The investigator pointed at a former maid of the estate.
âWhy was her mouth sealed?â
âHmm.â
Killian, clearly uninterested, checked his pocket watch.
âShall I unseal it?â
âIf you would, Your Grace.â
Killian snapped his fingers, and the womanâs mouth burst openâliterally.
âIâm innocent! All I did was sell the location for some cash!â
The investigator immediately understood why her mouth had been sealedâher voice was loud, shrill, and nonstop.
âThat pink-haired maid! Sheâs the one involved! She stole one of the test subjects! It wasnât meâit was her!â
The investigatorâs eyes narrowed.
âPink-haired maid? I donât see anyone like that on the witness list.â
As she screamed again, Killian snapped his fingers, silencing her.
âSheâs been delusional since yesterday. Donât mind her.â
The investigator glanced at the woman before turning away.
âUnderstood.â
He was standing before Killian Drocheâa genius magician suffering from mana instability.
And before being part of the Magic Association, he too was a magician. He deeply admired Killian, who led the new era of mass-produced magical goods.
If Killian Droche said something, it had to be true.
âThe suspects are mentally unstable and canât testify. The situation is unclear⌠so youâll still need to stand trial.â
Killian only nodded slightly, his expression faintly annoyed.
The investigator quickly added,
âBut of course, the Association believes in your innocence, Your Grace. Think of the trial as a way to clear your name.â
Wiping sweat from his brow, the investigator continued.
âIt must be officially declared by the Association, through legal process, so there are no rumors.â
Killian answered dryly:
âI trust the Association will prove my innocence. Youâre always so fair and just.â
He stood up from leaning against the wall.
âSo weâre done for today?â
He smirked confidentlyâthe kind of confidence only someone certain of their innocence could show.
