~Chapter 7~
Aisha safely arrived at the port with the children.
âThat must be the ship.â
It was smaller than she expected. But who cared about size now? If she could just get out of here safely, sheâd swim if she had to.
She rummaged through her pocket and double-checked the tickets.
âTo Ordia.â
The Ordia Empire.
A small empire located a bit of a distance from Draxion, the main setting of The Emperor Canât Live Without His Captive.
She only knew one thing about Ordia: trade was very active, and many people from other empires lived thereâpeople like her.
âOnce I settle in Ordia, I can start the magazine again. Runeâs guild members will handle the printing like always.â
Besides, not even Killian Winters would chase her all the way there. Heâd just returned from warâhe wouldnât have the time.
Thinking that, she felt a little more at ease.
âFive minutes until departureâŠâ
She figured they might as well board early. Gathering the kids who were still looking around the port curiously, she said:
âAlright kids, Iâm going with Helen now. You all stay safe, okay?â
âDonât worry about us. Youâre the one who needs to be careful. Donât let shady people steal your money.â
âY-Yeah.â
Truly dependable. She almost regretted not sending them to inform Rune instead of Leoric.
As she thought that, Aisha handed the staff two tickets.
âHereâone child, one adult.â
Once aboard, Aisha checked the time again anxiously. Five minutes until departure. Surely nothing could happen in those five minutesâŠ
âUm, Miss AishaâŠâ
âHm?â
When Helen called her name, Aisha finally looked at the girl. Her face was still full of fear.
âAre you really sure this will be okayâŠ?â
ââŠâŠâ
âIâm just a little scaredâŠâ
âOf course itâll be okay!â
Aisha responded firmly.
âNothingâs going to happen! Donât worry about a thing, Helen. Got it?â
She said that, butâŠ
âMy heartâs going to explode. Damn it.â
She was just as scared.
As Aisha fidgeted with her fingers near the deckâ
âHey! Youâre so late! I thought you ran off with the goods!â
Her gaze turned toward the man who had just boarded with a large load and the group welcoming him.
âA merchant? Ordia does have active tradeâŠâ
âI made it in time, didnât I? Youâd have been late too, in my shoes.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou knowâthat Duke.â
Duke?
Aishaâs ears perked up like a rabbitâs.
âKill⊠what was it? KilliâŠâ
âKillian Winters?â
âYeah! Killian Winters!â
No. Way.
âThe Duke of Winters suddenly showed up with his knights! Enough to fill the whole street!â
Aishaâs face turned pale, then blue.
âWhy here, out of nowhere? Especially someone as important as him?â
âThatâs what makes it so weird. Now you get why I was late?â
The man shrugged.
âI donât know whatâs going on, but he looked like he was searching for someone.â
âSearching? For who?â
âHow should I know? But one thingâs for sureâwhoever it is, theyâre dead now.â
ââŠâŠâ
âYou know how terrifying Killian Winters is, right? If he showed up personally and not just sent his soldiers, heâs serious.â
âYeah, no kidding. Poor bastard, whoever it is.â
âT-This is insane!â
Heâd already figured out that Sunday ExposĂ© was based in Lindell Street? She never imagined even Killian would move this fast.
âAt this rate, he might even stop the ship. Then Iâm completely screwed!â
Panicked, Aisha kept checking the time. Thankfully, less than a minute remained until departure.
She glared anxiously at the ticking second hand of her watch. 30, 29, 28âŠ
âPlease⊠Please!â
16, 15, 14âŠ
Clasping her hands, Aisha shut her eyes tight.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
âDeparting now!â
The booming voice of the sailor brought color back to Aishaâs face. Her knees gave out and she was about to collapse in reliefâ
But then:
âWh-What is that?â
âDear god⊠Whatâs happening?â
âI told you! Killian Winters really did storm in with his knights!â
Up ahead.
A swarm of black-clad soldiers was rushing toward them like a horde of bees.
More precisely, at the frontâKillian Winters.
âAaaaaah!â
Aisha screamed internally and gripped the deck railing. Peering over the edge, she saw the mooring rope had already snapped.
âStop! Stop that ship!â
The knights shouted as they ran, but the ship had already left. It slowly pulled away from the dockâŠ
And at the very edge of the harbor, Killian stood, black eyes fixed on Aisha.
âN-No⊠I must be imagining it⊠Thereâs no way he knowsâŠâ
Aisha muttered with a dazed face.
But why did it feel like his gaze was locked on her?
She couldnât understand.
âWhat, is he going to stop the ship mid-sail? Or jump into the ocean and climb aboard?â
Not even Killian could do something in a situation like this.
Please, god. Protect me.
Aisha, who didnât even believe in God, prayed with tightly clasped hands.
âHuh?â
Suddenly, she saw Killianâwho had been glaring at herâtake several steps back.
And thenâ
âW-Whoa!â
âWait, Duke Killian!â
With clenched teeth, Killian sprinted toward the harborâs edge, and people all around screamed and shouted.
Aisha couldnât move. She just stared in shock as Killian picked up speed.
In moments, he reached the end of the dockâand leapt.
THUD!
With a loud crash, Killianâs heavy body landed on the deck, and the ship rocked violently.
Now safely aboard, Killian looked down at Aisha like he was about to murder her.
âHuffâŠâ
Aishaâs legs gave out and she collapsed on the spot.
âSighâŠâ
Killian continued to stare, then bent one knee to meet her eye level.
âHello, Aisha Ashton.â
Then, he moved his lips slowly and said:
âEldest daughter of Count Ashton. Writer and publisher of Sunday ExposĂ©.â
ââŠâŠâ
âRight?â
Iâm screwed.
Aisha stared at him like she might faint any second.
âGoing somewhere in a hurry? To the point of abandoning your studio?â
âN-No, youâre misunderstandingâ!â
Just thenâ
âAisha noona!â
From far behind came a sudden shoutâLeoricâs voice.
Turning her head, she saw the kids and Leoric being held by the knights.
âIâm so sorry!â
ââŠâŠâ
âThis wasnât supposed to happen⊠but I got caught!â
You useless, traitorous little brother.
âHurry and come over here too! Theyâre actually really kind and friendly!â
Aisha exhaled slowly.
Then she stared into Killianâs dark, gleaming eyesâeyes that had nothing to do with kindness or friendliness.
