Raymond tugged at the back of my head, grumbling.
âHow could you hit me like this all of a sudden! And you even moved the tree with magic!â
âThe wind must have moved the tree,â John replied with a shrug.
âYou know you canât really use magic well in this Monster Forest from the start, right?â
The wind around the Monster Forest was blowing fiercely now.
The reason the place was called Monster Forest was that the weather around it changed capriciously, just as if it were a place where monsters lived.
But Raymond looked at John with an unfair look.
âAre you really not my lord? Could I be struck by a tree all of a suddenâŚ?â
âIt seems the tree knew your guilt too,â John said.
âWould a lord do such a thing to his master!â
I kept talking to that tree.
-You donât hear me, do you?
Even if youâre not someone else, you canât fool my eyes.
It was indeed true that suddenly a tree moved and struck Raymond.
âThereâs no answer coming back.â
Sometimes there are trees that canât be spoken to.
âBut it felt like a warning was being sent to me.â
So I contacted the major trees directly.
-Excuse me, tree folk? I canât even communicate with the trees of the Monster Forest.
But strangely, there was no response from the major trees either.
It felt ominous.
âWhatâs the reason?â
Before entering the Monster Forest, I asked the trees about it.
-Trees there arenât cooperative like us. But there isnât much difference, really.
-For real?
-Of course!
Having said thatâ
âThereâs no contact at all!â
The information from trees is not something they experience themselves, so sometimes theyâre wrong in this way.
I felt an unseen gaze, so I turned my head, and John was carefully watching my expression.
I blinked and smiled as if I had done something bad.
âDid something smudge on my face?â
âYou donât look as good as this morning,â he said.
My condition wasnât that different.
âWell, Iâm not sure,â I said.
âWhen you say you donât know, you mean youâre not feeling well?â
Lately John checked my status every time our eyes met.
At first I worried how to handle it. But now I knew how to answer.
âSo, John, what do you mean by not being able to use magic well in the Monster Forest?â
He deftly changed the subject.
âAh, because this Monster Forest has magic as unstable as the weather. Thatâs why there are restrictions on using magic.â
âEven you, John?â
âIf Iâm careless, Iâll fail magic. And if magic fails, Iâll take backlash. So Iâd rather not use magic in this Monster Forest as much as possible.â
That said, the place was weird enough that even contacting the major trees wouldnât be easy.
John pointed to his waist and loosened the corners of his mouth.
âBut donât worry. Your lady can definitely be protected.â
âDid you learn to sword-fight too?â
âI can do anything.â
A very arrogant remark, but it made Johnâs nod seem natural.
Still, I worried and asked.
âBut wouldnât fighting monsters be dangerous?â
âStill the same.â
John raised his eyebrows and asked back.
âHow much do you know about monsters?â
âI know the kinds of monsters and their general traits.â
Monsters are beings that defy the order of the gods.
Monsters born from chaos are dangerous beings that could ruin the world.
âCome to think of it, Johnâs black magic is also close to chaotic power.â
Itâs amazing that he uses regular magic as well as black magic.
John looked quite surprised by my quick answer.
âThe nobles of the capital donât know well either. Youâre really smart.â
âI just spend all my time reading at home. I donât know what others all know.â
I felt shy and gave a awkward smile.
âStill, knowing something is a great thing.â
But hearing praise felt good.
âMaybe because I feel recognized, even if itâs fake.â
I had quite a desire for recognition without realizing it.
Kind and calm conversation, occasional smiles I didnât even notice, the warm touch.
âIf all this is a deception⌠I hope it lasts as long as possible.â
Tap, thudâ
Raindrops began to fall slowly from the sky. The sky grew dark.
âIf it keeps raining, moving by carriage will be difficult.â
The leader of our group suddenly stopped walking. A strange anxiety spread.
âSir, my lord! This is bad!â
A mounted scout rode up and reached Johnâs side. The scoutâs face was pale.
John narrowed his brows and asked.
âWhat happened?â
âA group of crawlins appeared nearby. An entire swarm is converging toward this place!â
âCrawlin is coming as a swarm?â
Johnâs expression hardened.
âAre you sure theyâre crawlins? Crawlin doesnât live in swarms.â
âNo, they are crawlins. They came separately, but theyâre coming as if in one big swarm, from multiple directions toward Monster Forest.â
The mood grew darker.
Crawlin was a monster I knew to be extremely dangerous.
âMagic doesnât work on them at all, and their blades hardly cut. Theyâre a disaster.â
They come in various shapes, but all crawlin glow with complete magic resistance, earning them the name of disaster monsters.
But their weakness was that they only hunt their prey and then fall asleep.
âHow much longer until we get there?â
âIn about 30 minutes.â
John asked the soldiers with narrowed eyes.
âHas there been any recent instance of monsters suddenly coming out like this?â
âNothing like that. We always keep an eye on crawlin-type monsters.â
After a moment of silence, John spoke.
-Did you contact their nature?
âYes. But because of crawlin, communication with monsters in the forest isnât possible.â
âUnderstood. This is a situation where crawlins are rushing in en masse. Split into five-person squads and head toward the Grand Citadel while avoiding the crawlin swarm.â
With crawlin, magic canât be used, so itâs wiser to avoid them. When John gave the order, the soldiers moved in perfect order.
The raindrops fell heavier and heavier.
A rushing, terrifying crawlin swarm gathered in the rain.
Even in this crisis, John remained steady, controlling and issuing orders to the knights.
âThis is it.â
The noble, proud image of the Blanchet Duke that Libertan had so envied.
I found myself staring at Johnâs charismatic, almost hypnotic presence as if I were entranced.
Johnâs gaze met mine.
âIâll move separately with you, my lady.â
Raymond and the knights moved with composure, placing their hands over their hearts and then moving ahead.
~¡~¡*¡ . ¡*¡ . ¡*¡ . ¡*¡~¡~
And so I moved separately from John.
âIs it okay to be just the two of us like this?â
John even held me, not wanting me to push myself.
âItâs better to be alone than being bothered by a nuisance.â
âButââ
The Blanchet Dukeâs knights were elite soldiers. They would help.
âItâs safer to stay apart from a crowd. Itâs better to go separately. And Iâm the strongest, so itâs fine.â
His words cooled my anxiety a little. But I knew how dire the situation was. Crawlin were monsters so dangerous they were called a disaster.
âJohn.â
I squeezed his shoulder with a reassuring grip.
âEveryone else should be safe, right?â
âIf weâre lucky.â
John didnât try to console me in a clumsy way. He scanned the surroundings with sharp eyes.
âIf we narrowly avoided the crawlin swarm, weâll all be fine.â
âWill we be okay?â
âDonât worry. Iâm right beside you.â
Even in a steep forest, John walked like on flat ground, then paused.
A gentle smile faded from his face.
ââŚWhy are the crawlins suddenly changing positionâŚâ
âWhy?â
âNo. I think we need to change direction.â
John picked me up and started running in another direction.
âThereâs no doubt something went wrong.â
His attitude had completely changed. There was strangely little room for ease.
The surrounding trees groaned and shook as if in pain. The sudden rain and strong gusts intensified.
âI keep feeling something off.â
Even while being held by him, I couldnât shake the growing sense of unease.
I asked John.
âJohn. Something isâŚâ
Quack⌠thud!
A huge tree suddenly toppled over.
A monstrous form, a monster with a grotesque shape, stood and glared at us while breaking the tree.
âIs that crawlin?â
In front of us, the crawlin looked like a mix of multiple predators in one form.
A lionâs face, a scorpion-like body, and snakes writhing on the tail.
Crawlin charged at John.
Even in the dark rain, the crawlinâs sharp fangs flashed ominously.
John cut the crawlin in half with the sword at his waist. The monsterâs black blood pooled on the ground.
His face grew even darker.
âHave they already reached this far?â
The arm that had been holding me clenched tight. John was tense.
Crrr⌠another crawlin began to appear.
In the dark, their fierce eyes glinted. They were slowly approaching to threaten John, but with a willing mind they could close the distance soon.
âThere are more crawlin farther away.â
A primal fear rose through me.
No matter how strong John is, he cannot face all those horrendous monsters without magic.
I slowly stepped down from Johnâs embrace.
âEstelle. Donât be afraid,â John whispered with a calm smile.
âWe can take care of it quickly.â
âThereâs no need.â
As I slowly shook my head, he looked at me with a strange, fixed gaze.
âWhat do you mean?â
âJohn, go alone.â
With a smile still on his lips, John tilted his head. It sounded absurd.
âGo alone?â
âThere are too many. If we stay, weâll both be in danger.â
I looked at him quietly and spoke.
âIf you go alone, you can run away.â
âNo,â John answered firmly.
âCanât run away.â
âYour answer is faster than usual.â
The rain drenched me. I held Johnâs hands without a word.
Perhaps John would stay and fight to the end for me.
âEven so, thereâs no guarantee weâll both survive.â
But if that happened, John would die in this Monster Forest before completing his revenge.
My heart grew strangely calm.
I had known that a day like this would come. I think I prepared my heart to some extent.
âJohn. Iâm fine.â
It wasnât a terrible ending after all.
âI wasnât betrayed by John and killed.â
If I let him go first, my death would become a sacrifice.
âWith this situation, such jokes are hard to swallow, even for me.â
âYou can go to the fortress alone.â
John did not answer; he looked down at our joined hands.
I unconsciously trembled at the sensation of his touch.
I quickly pulled my hand away and forced a faint smile. Probably my body still didnât want to die.
âJust because you cry and push doesnât mean youâll live.â
Sometimes you have to give up as the situation requires.
As much as I fought to stay alive, I was furious at this situation. But I knew this wasnât Johnâs fault, nor mine, nor anyoneâs.
So I could speak calmly.
But Johnâs reaction was different from mine.
âSo youâll abandon me and go?â
âAbandonment isnât what Iâm doing.â
Luckily, my voice was very calm.
âJohn will survive too.â
âHa!â
John let out a derisive laugh.
âI guess you donât understand what this situation is.â
John lowered his voice and grabbed my shoulders.
âYou, youâll die.â
ââŚâ
âTo be eaten by the monster swarm.â
âI said Iâm fine.â
A tiny crack appeared on Johnâs expression.
âI donât want to see you risk yourself for me just because of me.â
âMy lady.â
âDonât worry too much.â
I placed my hand on his cheek.
âAnd donât blame yourself. This isnât your fault.â
Normally calm as always, John felt strangely hot.
âEven if I die, Iâll never blame you.â
John stared at me for a moment, as if he had nothing to say. Redâhis eyesâwere filled with many emotions. I moved his hand from my shoulder, stood back with my hands behind me, and looked away.
Now, the last face I would see was Johnâs.
âGo.â
I forced the most beautiful smile I could as I looked at him.
âFor those waiting for John.â
One crawlin among the swarm that hadnât moved, as if alerting us, began to step forward.
In the end, Johnâs sharp gaze contorted.
