Chapter 68
Fish, Tree, Bird and BeastÂ
Do-hyun seemed to notice that I-yeon had come closer and gently pushed her back inside.
âCome in first, itâs cold out here.â
âItâs not cold, Iâm right in front of the fire.â
Hearing that she was fine, I-yeon went back in and stared into the fire again.
They decided to have grilled meat for the first round and eat the dishes made by the aunt for the second.
âThank you for grilling so well! Iâll enjoy it.â
Ha-yul said politely before starting to eat.
âOh my, Mr. Moonje, you must not have eaten before coming here?â
It seemed Jae-ha had decided to shorten âInseong Moonjeâ to just âMoonje.â
Even I-yeon thought Ha-yulâs hurried eating looked a bit worrying.
She might get indigestion at that rate.
âThis place has such a great view it boosts your appetite, and the vice president grills meat so well I canât stop eating! Unlike someone whoâs just sitting still.â
Ha-yul shot Jae-ha a glare before focusing back on her food.
I-yeon sat next to Ha-yul and nudged her with her elbow.
âHey, heâs still your senior. Donât you think youâre being too harsh?â
I-yeon whispered quietly so only Ha-yul could hear.
Even if theyâd met under bad terms, she didnât want Ha-yul to cross the line, so she decided to warn her in advance.
âThen calling him âInseong problemâ and giving him a nickname is fine?â
Ha-yul snorted and turned her head sharply.
I-yeon shook her head, realizing there was nothing she could do.
Do-hyun sat across from her after bringing over freshly grilled pork belly.
Then he placed a tender slice on top of I-yeonâs rice.
It was the first time he openly cared for her in front of friends.
Since everyone there knew them well, it made him more self-conscious and shy.
Ha-yul didnât miss the moment and spoke up with a teasing tone full of envy.
âVice President, youâre so sweet! Youâre not like what Iâve heard at all.â
She cupped her cheeks with both hands and praised him.
âI heard you were cold-hearted and distant.â
âOh? And when did you hear that?â
Do-hyun asked with a faint smile, but his eyes glinted sharply.
âI think I know exactly who spread that rumorâŚâ
Ha-yul slowly turned her head toward I-yeon.
Her eyes trembled as if asking, What do I do now? Did I mess up?
I-yeon blinked twice slowly.
Yes, you did mess up, she silently answered.
âSo thatâs the kind of rumor about me. Funny, Iâve heard the opposite. Iâm curious where that came from.â
âR-right? I wonder where I heard it.â
Thatâs why you have to warn close friends ahead of time.
Ha-yul knew too much about I-yeon, which made it risky.
Old memories blur the line between whatâs safe to say and whatâs not, so I-yeon silently blamed herself for not reminding her.
âAre you already tipsy?â
Jae-ha asked Ha-yul with a teasing grin.
His respectful gaze toward Do-hyun quickly changed.
Ha-yul glared back.
âThereâs not even a single glass of alcohol on the table, how could I be drunk!â
Meaning she wasnât.
After finishing her meal, Ha-yul said she was starting to crave alcohol and asked what everyone wanted to drink.
âLet the ladies choose. This place has pretty much everything.â
âHow about highballs? I brought tonic water!â
âBefore we start, should we do a little gift ceremony? You canât come to a housewarming empty-handed.â
Jae-ha pulled a box from beside him.
âI do have a cleaning lady who comes regularly, but I thought this would be perfect for emergencies. Since you two are newlyweds, I figured itâd come in handy.â
He had bought a robot vacuum cleaner.
âWhen youâre bored, turn it on. Itâs cute, like a little puppy roaming around.â
He tapped the box affectionately.
They probably wouldnât need it much since the housekeeper took care of cleaning, but it was still a nice gift.
âThank you. Thatâll be really useful.â
Rich people really do give expensive gifts like itâs nothing.
âWhen you get home from work and wish someone would greet you, just open the app and press the start button ten minutes before arriving. Itâll be cleaning when you walk in, like itâs welcoming you.â
From the way he blinked slowly, it looked like Jae-ha actually thought of it as a family member.
âHaving someone or something at home waiting for you really is nice.â
I-yeon agreed awkwardly with a smile.
âYou donât actually think of it as a pet, do you?â
Ha-yul asked with a skeptical look.
Jae-ha just laughed off her jab.
At this point, I-yeon couldnât tell whether the two were enemies or secretly interested in each other.
âAlright, letâs have a drink.â
Ha-yul rolled up her sleeves and began mixing highballs with serious focus.
Sheâd brought an entire lineup of syrups: Earl Grey, Shine Muscat, and more.
âIâll skip the syrup,â Jae-ha said suddenly.
I-yeon assumed he just preferred the natural flavor, but Ha-yul pouted.
âIt tastes better with syrup though.â
She refused to back down, clearly having her own golden ratio.
Watching them bicker, I-yeon leaned toward Do-hyun and whispered.
âDonât they look like a sitcom duo? Like a cat and dog. They canât stop picking at each other.â
Do-hyunâs lips curved in amusement.
âActually, they kind of fit.â
Meaning, theyâre both a little crazy, I-yeon interpreted from his eyes.
Eventually, everyone respected each otherâs preferences and had a few rounds.
After a while, with a faint buzz, Ha-yul suddenly stood up.
âAlright! Time for a game. Who here knows âEo-mok-jo-dongâ?â
Do-hyun raised an eyebrow and mouthed to I-yeon, Do you know that game?
She shook her head.
She had no idea what it was either.
No one else seemed to know, so Ha-yul explained.
âEoâ stands for fish, âmokâ for tree, âjoâ for bird, and âdongâ for animal â you just name one when prompted.
In rhythm, the player would call out someoneâs name along with a category, and the person called had to quickly say something that fit.
Jae-ha, of course, targeted Ha-yul every time.
Again.
âMoonje, jo!â
And again.
âMoonje, dong!â
It felt like the entire game existed just to attack her.
Each time he called her âMoonjeâ instead of by name, Ha-yul scowled but still answered correctly.
I-yeon thought Jae-ha seemed to enjoy teasing her way too much.
âI think we should stop drinking. Ha-yul might get drunk soon.â
She already looked slightly tipsy.
They had to wrap things up since everyone still had to get home.
Jae-haâs eyes were a little glassy too.
He stared at I-yeon for a moment, as if deciding whether to speak.
âAt the event, your first impression was unforgettable. I couldnât believe you were the same secretary who worked with Do-hyun! I was honestly shocked by your disguise skills.â
Ha-yul nodded in agreement.
âI know, right? I was amazed too. How do you hide your real face that well? I thought you were a makeup artist!â
Jae-ha nodded enthusiastically.
Was she really that good at disguising herself?
Well, even I-yeon sometimes surprised herself.
Being told sheâd fooled them so well made her oddly proud.
âI guess I have a knack for it. Maybe Iâm good with my hands.â
Her joke made everyone laugh.
âSeriously, itâs so nice being with good people like you. Letâs do this again soon. Come over anytime.â
It was her first time spending an evening like this, with her boyfriend and friends together.
Sheâd always been busy with family gatherings, rarely hanging out with friends other than Ha-yul.
It felt heartwarming â realizing how fun it was to share time with people she liked.
âYouâre not drunk, right? What are you like when you are?â
Do-hyun cut off Jae-haâs question sharply, clearly not liking where it was going.
âCome on, I didnât mean anything by it. Iâm not into stealing anyoneâs girlfriend! Even if sheâs as pretty as I-yeon, okay?â
He protested dramatically.
âDonât you have a girlfriend, Jae-ha?â
I-yeon finally asked what sheâd been curious about all night.
After seeing how well he and Ha-yul got along, she wondered if there was something between them.
She hoped Ha-yul could finally settle down with someone good â maybe even Jae-ha.
Theyâd make a surprisingly cute couple.
âUnfortunately, no. If you know any nice girls, please introduce me.â
He smiled playfully.
People never notice whatâs right in front of them.
âThereâs one sitting right next to you.â
When I-yeon said it openly, Jae-ha rubbed his arms dramatically like he got chills.
âPlease donât say scary things. I want to date someone with normal character.â
âIâll pass, thanks!â
It seemed it would take them a long time to get along.
After finishing all the snacks for round two, it was time to wrap up.
âPlease invite us again next time. Hopefully, the vice president will talk a bit more.â
Ha-yul waved and left in a taxi.
The night had been so fun it ended too soon.
âLetâs definitely meet again. The four of us.â
