Chapter 2
Conditions for Succession to the Dukedom (2)
Ethan said firmly.
âI want the oldest child here.â
âWonât you even take a look around first?â
âWhat for?â
âUm, Your Grace. Raising a child is much more difficult than you might think.â
Theresa bowed her head deeply, trying to persuade Ethan.
âOf course, I have no doubt you will provide a wonderful environment, but for the childâs emotional well-being, I think it would be best if you looked around at least once.â
âIâm busy.â
Ethanâs eyebrows furrowed crookedly.
Even though she had decided not to look, Bel couldnât take her eyes off Ethanâs vividly changing expressions.
What kind of expression is that?
The emotion felt from that scowling face was something Bel had not yet learned.
[Thatâs a mischievous, grumpy face, Baby Star. Itâs one of the bad faces.]
The spirit, sensing Belâs thoughts, explained from her side.
Aha. A bad face.
Bel crumpled her eyebrows following Ethanâs lead, then quickly smoothed her expression back out.
âI am the oldest girl in this orphanage.â
âHow old are you?â
âSix… sixteen years old.â
âI will take care of you until you become an adult.â
âThank you for thinking well of me, but Iâm sorry.â
Lily rejected Ethanâs offer.
âI hope children younger than me receive Your Graceâs support instead. If itâs alright with you, I will guide you through the orphanage.â
At that, Ethan grumbled discontentedly to the man standing behind him.
â…Aspe.â
âWhat is it?â
âNo woman has ever dumped me until now.â
âAh, yes.â
[That one is a flustered expression. Itâs the face people make when theyâre surprised.]
I see.
Bel nodded silently at the spiritâs explanation.
[Baby Star.]
âHmm?â
Tilting her head to the side, Bel looked at the spirit.
[Why donât you follow that human?]
âOoomph?â
Belâs head tilted even further.
Follow him? That mister?
The moment Bel tilted her head and looked at Ethan, their eyes met once again.
âWhatâre you lookinâ at?â
This time, Bel shot back first.
However, pretending not to hear, Ethan ignored Bel and vaguely pointed at one of the children seen outside the window.
âThen Iâll take that child.â
âPardon?â
âHey, you there!â
In the end, he opened the window and carelessly gestured with his finger.
âMe?â
âYeah, you. Will you be adopted by me?â
âWho are you?â
âIf you come with me, Iâll let you eat delicious snacks every day.â
âItâs big trouble if you follow someone who gives you food!â
The child, who answered clearly, hurried away as if running for their life.
âWhy does everyone say no?â
âThey didnât say anything wrong. You shouldnât follow strangers.â
Bel looked at the âflusteredâ Ethan.
[If you follow that human, there will be a lot to learn.]
âEeing.â
Bel didn’t really feel like it.
It seemed Ethan felt the same way.
Having been rejected for the second time, instead of checking Belâs willingness to be adopted, he decided to look around the orphanage.
âAny interest in becoming the Young Master of Ibek?â
Ethan told every child in sight to follow him.
However…
âNo!â
They all refused him without exception. Or…
âEek!â
Ran away. Or…
âWaaah!â
Began to sob hysterically in the end.
Swept up in a subtle shock from the repeated rejections, Ethanâs expression changed yet again.
Bel tried to make her pupils tremble to copy him, but only her head shook side to side.
âAspe.â
âYes. Speak, Your Grace.â
âWhy do the kids hate me? Isnât this a chance to become a noble?â
âItâs not that they hate the chance; isn’t it that they hate Your Highness?â
âWhat did you say?â
Ethanâs eyes narrowed sharply.
Bel imitated him again, glinting her eyes to the side.
Bad eyes.
It was right then.
[By the way, Baby Star.]
âBy the way, Your Highness.â
[Why is that human not offering adoption only to you?]
âWhy arenât you proposing adoption to that child?â
The guest called Aspe and the spirit spoke almost at the exact same time.
At those words, Bel looked at Ethan, and Ethan likewise looked back at Bel.
âTsk.â
His face crumpled once more.
âTaking a tiny peanut like thatâwhen would I ever finish raising it?â
âPlease speak sense. How is that child a tiny peanut?â
âThen a pebble.â
âAt least try talking to her. Or are you going to tour another orphanage?â
Aspe scolded Ethan.
Then Ethan made a sulky face and asked Bel gruffly,
âWhatâs your name?â
âByeo.â
âByeo?â
âNoo. Byeo-ol. Ah-i Byeo.â
Bel corrected him, but Ethan still failed to understand and babbled nonsense.
âRight. I am Duke Ibek. The child recognizes me.â
âHow could that possibly be?â
Ethan completely ignored Aspeâs rebuttal.
âSo, what is your name?â
âAh-i! Byeo-ol!â
Getting frustrated, Bel shouted out loud.
He was a mister who really couldn’t get the point.
âThis child is named Berta. We call her Bel.â
âBel? You should have pronounced it properly.â
He even went as far as to blame Bel for his own failure to understand.
âMister.â
â…What?â
âDummy.â
In the end, Bel ended up snapping at himâwhile copying his bad face.
At Belâs attack, Ethan let out a dry laugh.
âWhat did she just say?â
âYour Highness. Letâs go with that child.â
âWhat? Did you not hear what she just said? Do you need me to clean out your ears for you?â
Ethan grabbed Aspe by the collar, looking ready to shove a skewer into his ear at any moment.
The spirit gasped in shock and quickly covered Belâs view.
[Oh dear. What a ferocious expression. Donât copy that one.]
âOung.â
Bel nodded her head, sticking her lips out.
âDoesnât she have plenty of guts!â
In the meantime, the adults were moving the conversation along on their own.
âEven after seeing Your Highness, she didnât hide, say no, cry, or run awayâsheâs been following you around the whole time.â
âYeah. And sheâs the size of a pebble.â
âChildren grow quickly anyway.â
Aspe persuaded Ethan, saying that a nanny would handle all the child-rearing anyway and that Setia was waiting anxiously.
Ultimately persuaded, Ethan let out a deep sigh and squatted down in front of Bel.
His posture was just like the leader of a gang of thugs who had set up camp in a gloomy back alley.
âIf you come with me, Iâll let you eat bread much bigger and tastier than that every day.â
He pointed with the tip of his chin at the bread Bel was nibbling on as he made his offer.
Bel half-closed her eyes and scanned him up and down.
…Heâs giving me bread?
âWhy do you keep trying to coax the child with food?â
âI have to do at least this much so thereâs room for her to reconsider.â
While keeping her eyes fixed on Ethan, who was shouting at the top of his lungs again, Bel kept her mouth moving and nibbled her bread.
Ethanâs expression was exceedingly colorful.
His eyebrows twitched and wriggled, and his eyes turned sharp like this.
When he spoke, his lips fluttered, and his hair sparkled.
His emotions could be felt entirely.
In a world covered in storm clouds, Ethan alone stood noble and clear.
[Baby Star. You need parents.]
â…â
Veins bulged on the forehead of Ethan, who was giving Aspe a hard time.
Seeing the raised marks, a tiny smile formed at the corners of Belâs lips.
His personality seemed bad, but he felt like a funny mister.
âGood grief. As if thereâs any child in the world who would blithely follow a stranger just because of that…â
Bel slipped right between Ethanâs legs as he squatted there and hugged him.
âThere is. There is one, Your Highness.â
Aspe blurted out in utter disbelief.
Eventually, he even tried to persuade Bel back out of it.
âLittle one.â
âOung?â
âEven if a stranger offers you food, you shouldnât follow them, right?â
âOung.â
âThen is it okay to follow this mister, or not?â
âMister.â
âRight? You think you misjudged something too, don’t you?â
âFool.â
At Belâs single word, Aspe froze in place like a wooden statue.
In fact, what Bel had meant to say was, âIâm not a fool either. I know at least that much.â
It was just that she was still unskilled at forming sentences, so she had only spoken the important word appropriately.
âMe… I am… a fool…?!â
âYou idiot. Get out of the way.â
Ethan gave Aspe a nudge.
âYouâre the one who said youâd go, right?â
He then confirmed Belâs intention once more.
Bel looked Ethan straight in the eye and nodded.
âOung.â
âGo buy some bread. Iâll be handling the adoption procedures.â
Scooping Bel right up into his arms, Ethan kicked Aspeâs rear.
âAh, donât hit me!â
âHurry up and go before the kid changes her mind. If she says she won’t go either, Iâll bury you right here.â
Duke Ethan Ibek had chosen the child he would adopt.
The main character was none other than…
Will it be okay?
Berta.
Haa.
Theresa recalled the day she first met Bel.
