āMariabelle, I am His Highnessās fiancĆ©e. That is why, at the very least, I ask that you refrain from dining alone with him. And if possible⦠even when his friends are present, please do not join him when I am not there.ā
Mariabelle lowered her gaze, lightly touching her golden hair.
Silence fell between them. Aliciaās heart pounded as she waited for Mariabelleās reply.
(What if she refuses?)
She felt ashamed of herself for thinking such a thing, yet she could not remain silent. This was something she had to say.
After a short while, Mariabelle finally spoke.
āAll right. You are the eldest daughter, after all. I will obey your wishes.ā
āN-no, itās not an order,ā Alicia hurried to say. āIām asking you. I want you to respect my position as His Highnessās fiancĆ©e.ā
At that, Mariabelle smiled brightly.
āOf course. Donāt worry so much. From now on, I wonāt dine alone with His Highness. Iāll only join you when youāre there as well, Elder Sister.ā
Alicia felt a wave of relief wash over her. The conversation had gone far more smoothly than she had expected.
After all, Mariabelle was generally popular with the male students. Perhaps she did not feel particularly attached to Joshua in the first place.
Then came the day Alicia was to have her weekly lunch with Joshua.
When she entered the cafeteria, she saw that Mariabelle and Joshua were already seated together.
They appeared to be enjoying a lively conversation. Clutching her tray, Alicia approached them, her heart racing.
(Why is it that Iām so nervous, while Mariabelle looks so at ease?)
Just as Alicia reached the table, Joshua and Mariabelle stood up at the same time.
āEhā¦?ā
āIām sorry. Iāve run out of time,ā Joshua said to her.
āElder Sister, Iāve promised to meet a friend as well. Please excuse me.ā
With that, the two of them left side by side.
Alicia was left behind, standing alone.
(What⦠did I do wrong?)
Soft laughter drifted toward her.
It was Lily and the others.
Before Mariabelle enrolled, Alicia had believed she had regained those friendships. Yet ever since Mariabelle arrived, everything had changed.
Alicia could not even bring herself to cry.
She took a bite of bread.
(It has no taste at allā¦)
