Chapter : 34
Her voice trembled.
âI donât understand.â
She had tried to think it over.
Still, she didnât get it.
âWhy are you doing all this for me? Am I really worth all this effort? Does it even mean anything? You could have any friend you want, right? Why me, of all peopleâŚ?â
âBecause it has to be you.â
His voice was firm, unwavering.
âWhy am I doing this? Because I canât leave you alone. Worth the effort? I donât know. Meaning? There is. Could I have any friend I want? Whatâs the point of thatâif youâre not there.â
The rapid-fire reply ended in a low, heavy statement, repeated like a quiet drumbeat.
âBecause youâre not there.â
The emotion behind it hit her squarely, and for a brief moment, she wanted to run.
She was afraid she might give in just like this.
If the room hadnât been closed on all sides, she wouldâve definitely fled.
Faced with a truth she didnât want to confrontâwanted to avoidâshe couldnât muster a single word and kept her lips tightly shut. The silence between them deepened.
Even the trembling of her body began to subside.
Then a thought occurred.
âDid he leave?â
Had he given up because she kept pushing him away?
Just as relief and bitterness crossed her mindâ
âI know⌠that you donât really like me.â
The voice she thought had gone quiet spoke again.
âI know.â
Then why?
âStill, I like you.â
Why?
âI want to see you.â
She stood frozen, clutching the doorknob like it was her lifeline, unable to run.
âI wonder what youâre doing, and if you ever want to see me.â
His quiet voice came through the door.
âMy whole world is filled with you.â
His sincere heart pressed against hers.
âIn the end, itâs all about you.â
His clumsy but heartfelt wordsâ
âItâs okay if you donât believe me. Itâs okay if you donât like me.â
âburrowed into her heart with a force she couldnât ignore.
âButâŚâ
A trembling breath.
ââŚJust donât avoid me.â
She bit her lips. Again and again.
From his pained voice, she could feel just how much Pession had struggled, pondered, and agonized in that short time.
Who was she, to make someone go through all that?
âArelien, can you hear me?â
Suddenly she felt her cheeks were wet. She brushed them with her handâpale from gripping the doorknob too tightly.
Why was she crying?
Why, even though she was so scared and just wanted to hide again, did her hand keep holding the doorknob?
What was this feeling rising between her fear?
Why⌠did she want to open the door?
Why did she want to see him?
Click.
Creaaak.
The door opened for reasons even she didnât understand.
She was soaked in his emotions, poured over her like a sudden summer downpour.
And he looked at her with eyes full of longing, like a puppy abandoned by its owner.
âWhy am IâŚâ
Even though she knew how this would all end, she still wanted to reach out to him.
âYou believe what a child says?
Hadnât she been foolish enough?
An inner voice mocked her for hoping again.
âYouâll regret this. Be disappointed. Resent him. Be hurt again.
âIn just a few years, heâll change his mind.
âHe might forget all about today and act like it never happened.
âThen youâll be alone again.
I know. I know. And yetâŚ
I still want to believe.
Just this once.
Even just once is enough.
If Iâm with this invincible crown prince who feels like he can dodge any misfortuneâmaybe things will be okay?
Am I really that strange for thinking something so naive?
âIf you get close to me, youâll be unhappy too.â
âIf youâre there, nothing could make me unhappy.â
âPeople will ask why youâre hanging out with someone like me.â
âWho says that? Iâll make sure they never dare say it again.â
His unwavering, steady gaze was overwhelming. She still didnât understand.
âWhy are you doing all this?â
Then youâll be hated.
âWhyâŚ?â
Youâll end up alone too.
âWhy, of all people?!â
Words she threw at him to make him give upâ
âBecause I like you.â
He answered like it was nothing.
âIâŚâ
His honesty, consistent and pure, left her speechless. She clenched her eyes shut, then opened them again with determination.
âI donât like you.â
Even words meant to hurtâ
âThatâs okay.â
He said firmly, even with a face that looked far from okay.
âBecause I like you.â
Like that was the undeniable truth, Pession smiled as if he had no regrets or intention to retreat.
And just like a ghost set free by the burning midday sun, she stood dazed before that radiant smile.
In that moment, as she looked at the smile shining on herâ
She thought,
MaybeâŚ
Maybe sheâd been running from this moment all along.
ââŚâŚâ
ââŚâŚâ
After the emotional storm, an awkward silence settledâfor a moment.
âHehe.â
As soon as Pession laughed, all her tension collapsed. Apparently, she was the only one feeling awkward.
âBe honest. Howâd you get here today? You skipped class, didnât you?â
âHowâd you know? But I promised Iâll work harder tomorrow!â
âHowâd you know I was here?â
âSomeone told me.â
Who on earth told him?
âThereâs a traitor in the mansion.â
How dare they take the crown princeâs side and leak information! Sheâd have to tell Mehen later and make sure they paid the price.
âI looked everywhere. I knew youâd come here, but itâs so big, I had a hard time finding you.â
âHow did you know I was even participating in this game?â
âHmm. By chance?â
Something was definitely fishy.
She sighed as Pession grinned brightly and clearly refused to tell her.
âLetâs just do the puzzle.â
âOkay!â
Thankfully, all the puzzle devices were simple enough for a six-year-old to solve, so it wasnât hard.
Crack!
âŚThough it was a problem that Pession kept breaking things.
âThatâs weird? Why did it break? I didnât even use that much strength?â
ââŚPut that down and come here.â
âOkay!â
At least he listened wellâthat was a relief.
Sigh.
âArelien, you usually hate moving around, but youâre walking fine here.â
ââŚâŚâ
She couldnât argueâit was trueâso she stayed quiet. Apparently, it hadnât been a jab, because Pessionâs eyes sparkled.
âDo you move around when itâs fun?!â
Why did she get a bad feeling?
His eyes looked way too alertâtwice as sharp as usualâso she quickly changed the subject.
âWho did you come here with?â
âGriom.â
I knew it.
Forever suffering for being the crown princeâs chief aide. She sent her silent condolences to the ever-suffering Griom.
âYou came with Lady Mehen, right?â
âYeah.â
Thatâs my mom, after all.
âWe have to go save Princess Mehen.â
âAhaha. I need to go save Princess Griom too!â
Thinking of those two fully grown adult men turned into âprincesses,â they wandered the mansion, solving its secrets and looking for the hidden device.
ââŚStrange.â
Suddenly, Pession tilted his head.
âWhat is?â
âHmm. Feels like something changed.â
âWhat do you mean?â
Despite the chaos earlier, theyâd quickly solved most puzzles. The finish line was close.
They just had to find the hidden room holding the âprincessâ and unlock itâŚ
âWait.â
ââŚ?â
Pession stopped her and scanned the surroundings.
âArelien, thereâs something I figured out.â
â?â
âWhy donât we see the other kids anymore?â
âNow that you mention itâŚâ
It was strange.
Before the chase with Pession, theyâd occasionally crossed paths with others working on different puzzles.
âHmmâŚâ
She tried to shake off the negative thoughts, but she had to admitâsomething did feel off.
A strange tension, like the mansionâs atmosphere had changed.
âHuh?â
Then Pession tilted his head again.
âWhat now?â
âThat statueâdidnât it just move?â
ââŚDonât joke like that.â
âThatâs weird. I really thought it moved.â
She wasnât scared of ghosts, but she did hate creepy mysteries. It had to be a prank, like a hidden camera. No way this was real.
âLetâs just solve the puzzle and get out of here.â
âW-Whoa?!â
As she grabbed Pessionâs arm and urged him forwardâ
Zzzzztâ
She froze.
A strange, distorted sound she definitely shouldnât be hearing.
âArelien? Are you okay?â
What was that ominous feeling?
âCome here, stick close. Iâll protect you.â
âDonât be stupid. You could be in danger too.â
âBut if weâre together, maybe weâll be okay.â
âWell, thatâs true, butâŚâ
Why did she have a bad feeling that Pession was also in danger?
Her back tingled, like something was stimulating her nerves.
Thump.
Thump.
The survival instinct of the weakest link in the food chain warned her, beating hard. She winced, overwhelmed by the desire to flee.
Wiiingâ
Suddenly, the space twisted.
âArel?!â
On instinct, she shoved Pession awayâand in that moment, a powerful force swept over her.
Her consciousness faded.
âArelienâ!â
