chapter 37:
 A Kiss Between Us
âYour Grace, why are you hereâŚ?â
Leia, caught completely off guard, could only stare as Akkia walked confidently into the roomâlike he owned the place.
She blinked, trying to make sense of what was happening, while Akkia lounged casually on the sofa and tilted his chin at her.
âHow long are you going to stand there with that dumb look on your face?â
At his words, she automatically took a seat.
âWhat on earth is going on?â
This was the reception room of the Magnolia Trading Companyâspecifically, the room reserved for the companyâs elusive master to meet with guests.
And the man lounging on the sofa as if it were his own living room⌠clearly meant only one thing.
ââŚYour Grace. Donât tell meââ
She started to speak but hesitated, hoping she was wrong. The sickly Duke who had been cooped up in the mansion all his life⌠was the owner of Magnolia?
It didnât make sense. But Akkiaâs answer crushed her doubts completely.
âYou look shocked. Your usually quick mind seems to be stalling.â
He rested his chin on his hand and smirked like he was enjoying every second.
âItâs me. Iâm the master of Magnolia.â
Leiaâs eyes widened in utter disbelief.
âThe Duke is the head of MagnoliaâŚ?!â
Magnolia wasnât just any trading companyâit was the only rising power strong enough to rival the empireâs largest firm, the Parchia Guild.
And the man behind it was the frail, tragic prince who couldâve died any day?
She was sure of one thing: if this ever got out, it would be the scandal of the year.
âThatâs why no oneâs ever seen the master of MagnoliaâŚâ
He mustâve always sent representatives in his placeârotating them frequently to protect his identity.
A chill ran down Leiaâs arms at the realization.
Then another memory suddenly flashed through her mindâBaronâs startled reaction when he saw Akkia in Trenn.
âWait. That means⌠the order to buy my supplementsââ
Leia, now composed, looked at Akkia and asked:
âThen⌠the contract to supply my supplements. That was your doing too, wasnât it?â
âI figured you looked pathetic trying to scrape together a few coins. So yeah, I told them to make the offer.â
ââŚHa.â
Leia let out a short, disbelieving breath.
âAnd thatâs not all.â
ââŚâ
âI also sent emergency supplies to Trenn after hearing about the flood. I figured if something happened to your hometown, youâd lose focus on your antidote research.â
A decent person mightâve kept quiet about such good deeds or at least shown some humilityâbut unfortunately, Akkia wasnât that kind of person.
As if hoping for her appreciation, he started listing every minor thing heâd done for her.
âSo you sent me to Trenn so I wouldnât be distracted from my research?â
âExactly.â
âThen why did you come to Trenn?â
âTo keep an eye on you, of course. Make sure you were doing your job.â
He answered without a shred of hesitation.
âAnd the donation to the orphanage?â
âWellâŚâ
He paused mid-sentence for the first time.
âThat place is basically your home. Letâs just say it was for staff welfare.â
He said it casually, like it was no big dealâbut Leiaâs heart started pounding hard in her chest.
As awkward silence filled the room between them, a knock came at the door and a voice called out.
âPardon the interruptionâŚâ
They thought they were aloneâbut apparently someone had been standing outside the whole time.
A man entered.
âI was wondering when you were going to introduce meâŚâ
Leia stared in disbelief.
ââŚRichel?â
âHey, Leia.â
He gave her a sheepish wave and smile.
Why was he here?
Leia glanced between the two men as she pieced it together.
âWait⌠donât tell me⌠the âimportant figureâ Richel serves isâŚâ
âCorrect. The very man sitting in front of youâthe Duke.â
Leia felt like sheâd been hit in the back of the head.
âTheyâve been fooling me this whole time!â
She had unknowingly been dancing in the palm of the Dukeâs handâand the realization stung. But soon, another question arose in her mind.
âBut why reveal it now?â
Sure, the Duke had reason to keep it a secretâespecially from a housekeeper hired by the former butler. He had every right to be cautious.
But if he was going to hide it, why not keep it hidden? Why reveal everything now?
Something didnât feel right.
Like sheâd stepped into a trap she couldnât escape.
Leia looked at Akkia with wary eyes. Noticing her unease, he spoke.
âI wasnât planning to tell youâŚâ
A smirk curled at his lips.
ââŚbut I changed my mind.â
ââŚChanged your mind?â
Could you stop making life-changing decisions on your own, please?
âWeâre not strangers anymore, right?â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âI meanâweâve kissed. Canât be keeping secrets after that.â
Akkia added nonchalantly, a sly smile playing on his face.
Afternoon sunlight streamed into the office.
A blond man sat at his desk, listening as Marquis Rodrigo reported.
His only cousinâAkkia.
Exiled to the remote Heidern territory, living as a sickly, dying noble⌠and now news had arrived suggesting his end was near.
âThe Duke of Heidern is in a coma.â
The moment he heard how serious the condition was, the man had immediately dispatched imperial personnelâhis secretary, Marquis Rodrigo, and several trusted palace physicians.
According to the letter from the territory, the Duke had no hope of waking. The man had sent his people to essentially confirm Akkiaâs death.
But what the Marquis returned with was⌠very different.
âIt turns out the Duke only pretended to be poisoned. He seems to have suspected the butler, Bayern, was monitoring him.â
ââŚâ
âHe carefully set a trap and waited for the right chance to remove BayernâŚâ
Clack.
The pen in the blond manâs hand hit the desk with a sharp sound. The Marquis fell silent at once.
âSo youâre telling me Akkia wasnât actually poisoned?â
The manâs voice turned icy cold as his eyes gleamed with a dangerous light.
âSo Iâve been played by my dying little cousin all this time.â
ââŚâ
âBy someone who couldâve dropped dead any day.â
The Marquis flinched under the weight of those words. Despite his own rank and experience, he could feel the oppressive force of the man before him.
âI⌠I deeply apologize. I believed Bayern was the right man for the jobâhe seemed competent and loyalâŚâ
The Marquis dropped to his knees and bowed deeply.
Even though they were half-brothers, any misstep here could cost him his life.
After all, this man possessed the kind of power that could makeâor breakâempires.
âYes. Iâm quite disappointed in you this time, Marquis.â
âIâll do everything I can to make up for itâŚâ
Marquis Rodrigo, grinding his teeth, silently cursed.
âDamn that BayernâŚâ
That lowborn bastard always called him âbrotherâ just because they shared blood. The Marquis had never liked the man.
But he had seemed shrewdâuseful. So heâd used him.
And now⌠it had backfired, tarnishing his standing with the one man he couldnât afford to anger.
He clenched the carpet beneath his knees in frustration.
ââŚStill. I suppose I should give you one more chance, since I value you.â
The manâs tone softened slightly, and the Marquis finally exhaled.
âBut what I donât get isâhow did Akkia pull all that off? From your report, it sounds like youâd need considerable knowledge of herbs.â
The Marquis looked up. The manâs face was clearly puzzled.
Even Rodrigo had initially found it strange. Sure, Akkia had spent his youth in the imperial palace, but heâd only received a basic heirâs educationânothing like pharmacology.
âHe couldnât have done it alone.â
Which meant⌠someone was helping him.
Immediately, the image of Leia came to the Marquisâs mind.
That bold little apothecary who had presented Jane as a witness and dared accuse Bayern right to his face.
With that striking red hairâŚ
Yes. That girl had been a thorn in his eye.
âShe must be the accomplice.â
After a moment of thought, the Marquis finally spoke.
âI believe the apothecary assisted him.â
âThe apothecary?â
âYes. The new one. Sheâs sharp.â
At the unexpected name, a flicker of interest sparked in the manâs eyes.
âMost of the staff in the Dukeâs household were loyal to Bayern. If thereâs an ally, itâs likely the new apothecary.â
âI see. Investigate her.â
âUnderstood.â
The order had already been given.
As the Marquis stood at the manâs signal, he bowed and turned to leaveâwhen a quiet voice stopped him.
âBy the way, what happened to Bayern?â
âHe was taken care of. Cleanly.â
Officially, Bayern had been killed by bandits on his way to the capital.
In reality, the Marquis had arranged it. Even if he was the son of a previous Marquis, anyone who brought disgrace to the family had to go.
âGood. Greed always leads to downfall.â
The manâs cold approval passed without fanfare. Then, the Marquis asked:
âWhat should we do now? With the butler gone, no one is monitoring the Duke.â
The man rubbed his chin in thought. Without Bayern, there was no longer a pretext to monitor the Heidern estate.
Bayern had originally been placed there under the guise of protecting his only cousin.
But now, that reason was gone. And the newly emboldened Akkia couldnât be left alone.
âThereâs only one option.â
The man made his decision.
âBring Akkia to the capital.â
âIf I canât watch him from afar, Iâll keep him close.â
Somewhere always within reach of his gaze.
ââŚPardon? You want the Duke here in the capital?â
Surprised, the Marquis looked up.
âYes. My younger brother has been through enoughâI should look after him now.â
But despite the warm tone, the manâs icy blue eyes were sharp as blades, glinting like steel in the sunlight.
âTell them itâs the elder brotherâs wishâto keep his frail sibling close.â
A cold smile tugged at his lips. And the Marquis, seeing that expression, couldnât look away.
This manâIleis Magnum von Croateaâwas the Emperor. The sun of the Croatea Empire.
