Episode 9 â Please Gently Blow on Your Napolitan Pasta (4)
Just a moment ago, the puppy had been quiet, but now it suddenly started barking like it saw something.
Sasha wondered what the dog was looking at, but there was nothing in the direction of its gaze.
A cool breeze blew through the open window and brushed past her shoulder. At that moment, she remembered something her neighbor once said when she was a child:
âAnimals can see things people canât.â
She had always thought maybe it meant fairies or something like that. But the lady had said something different:
âWhen a dog barks at nothing… itâs because it sees a ghost.â
The memory gave her chills.
Sasha told herself ghosts didnât exist⌠but what if this cute little Welsh Corgi had actually seen one?
âCorgi,â she whispered, petting the dogâs neck to calm him down. But it didnât work. With its ears perked up, the dog suddenly ran out of the kitchen.
âC-Corgi!â
Despite its short legs, the little shepherd dog was fast. Sasha couldnât stop it and watched helplessly as it barked and ran into the hallway, seeming unafraid of even ghosts.
But in that moment, Sasha wasnât scared of ghosts either.
Actually, something else scared her even moreâ
âWhat if the master wakes up because of all this noise?â
Alfred had said it would take 2 or 3 days for the master to fully recover. That meant he needed deep, undisturbed rest.
But what if he was forced awake by the dogâs barking? His health would surely get worse.
Thinking this, Sasha jumped up from her seat.
âCorgi, come here!â
She ran after the dog, leaving her pasta behind.
Alfred, who was eating his pasta calmly with a fork, mumbled,
âI take back what I said about being happy together. Totally take it back.â
Sasha grabbed a lantern and chased after Corgi. The flickering light from the lantern danced with each step, casting shadows of the dog ahead of her.
âWhereâs he going?â
She saw the small dogâs shadow climbing the stairs.
âOf all places⌠why is it going toward the masterâs room on the second floor?!â
Pale with worry, Sasha carefully followed.
Luckily, the dog didnât go into the bedroomâit climbed up another flight of stairs.
âPhew. At least he didnât go inside.â
She was relieved, but it wasnât over until she caught him.
âCorgi, come here,â she whispered.
But the dog wagged its chubby little backside and disappeared into the hallway on the third floor.
Sasha held up her lantern to light the dark hallway.
Far away, she saw a shadow heading toward a corner.
âCorgi, all the doors are closed there.â
She remembered checking all the rooms the night before. Only the bedroom door on the second floor had been open. The third floor was completely closed.
âIf you come quietly, Iâll make you something yummy tomorrow.â
She regretted not bringing the pasta with herâit couldâve helped lure the dog back.
Still, hoping her promise would work, she moved toward the shadow.
âWoof!â
Suddenly, Corgi jumped out from behind a statue on the left side of the hallway.
âUhâŚ?â
The dog looked proud, like it wanted to be praised, and leaned into Sashaâs hand.
But Sasha couldnât relax.
She had clearly seen the dogâs shadow going forwardâso who or what had cast that shadow?
âWhat⌠was that shadow then?â
Just as she mumbled to herself in confusionâ
Creeeakâ
A door opened in the distance.
She quickly raised her lantern and saw a once-closed door now slowly swinging open.
âIt wasnât Corgi.â
The shadow she had chased belonged to someoneâor somethingâelse.
A cold shiver ran down her back.
Corgi must have sensed something strange. Maybe someone really had broken in, and he had tried to chase them off.
âStay calm. I need to call Alfred.â
If there really was an intruder, she couldnât handle it aloneâespecially not in the dark, where the intruder had the advantage.
âCorgi, letâs go call Alfred.â
She tried to carry the dog and head downstairs.
âWoof!â
But Corgi wriggled free and dashed into the open room.
âW-What do I do?!â
Sasha stopped in her tracks.
If she left now to get Alfred, Corgi might be in danger in the meantime.
Stuck between choices, Sasha made up her mind.
âIâll save Corgi, then run together.â
She grabbed the sword from a knight-shaped statue nearby. It wasnât real, but it might still scare someone.
âStay calm. Just follow the plan.â
Her thoughts quickly formed a plan:
First, she would hold the sword and sneak into the room silently. Then sheâd find the intruder and Corgi. If needed, sheâd threaten the intruder with the fake sword and grab Corgi. After that, theyâd run downstairs and alert Alfred.
âIf itâs dark enough, maybe the intruder wonât realize the sword is fake.â
Feeling slightly more confident, Sasha carefully opened the door.
There was no creaking soundâsuccess for step one.
But just as she sighed in reliefâ
âYouâre quite bold.â
A deep voice growled through the darkness, and a strong hand grabbed her.
The fake sword slipped from her hands and clattered to the floor. She was now trapped in a strangerâs arms.
She had underestimated the intruder!
Sasha struggled, but it was no use.
âYou dare enter here?â
His tone made it sound like she was the intruder.
She wanted to shout, âIsnât it you who broke in?â but his hand covered her mouth tightly.
He pinned her against the wall and looked down at her.
He tried to make out her face in the darkâthen Sasha saw it.
Blue eyes.
Eyes glowing the same color as the full moon.
They reminded her of a shimmering lake, beautiful but dangerous. Mysterious. Hypnotic.
For a moment, Sasha forgot he might be the intruder. She just stared, enchanted.
He seemed puzzled by her stillness, narrowing his glowing eyes.
âWoof!â
Corgiâs bark snapped the strange silence.
Sasha jumped like sheâd just woken up from a dream.
âW-What was I doing?!â
Was she possessed?
Why had she stood there staring like that?
Trying to break free, she squirmed, but his grip only tightened.
âL-Let me go!â
Just as she pushed against him and shouted, the man suddenly pulled her out of the room.
It was like he was checking something. He stepped into the light of the lantern.
The flickering flame lit up his shadowy faceâand finally revealed both of their identities.
As soon as Sasha saw who he was, her heart dropped.
The mysterious intruder… was someone she knew.
